I had finally completed the fuselage sides and was preparing to layout the fuselage on the workbench so that I could begin building the boat. I made some calculations about where to place the fuselage side and I placed it on the bench and something just wasn't right! The aft end of the side should have been hanging off the end of the bench but it was about 14 inches too short. I started checking everything and discovered that I had left out one of the 14 inch bays!!!! =20 I don't really know what to do. I know that I could fix my errors on the existing sides. My wife suggested just starting over and building new sides. I have even contemplated just leaving them the way they are. That would mean that I would have a normal length KR-2 except for 2 extra inches in the front. I would really like to know what other people think about this. Jeffrey Scott - Have you flown in any standard KR-2's? If so, did you notice much difference with the extra length in the rear of your fuselage when you flew your KR-2? How much of anything did it do to the pitch sensitivity? I really don't feel like building new fuselage sides, but I just don't know what to do. I just can't believe that I overlooked that 14 inches. CHT 325-400 275-375 300-375 EGT 13-1500 12.5-1400 12.5-1400 Those are some hard numbers for my plane in it's current configuration while flying at 1060# and 3.5 inches aft of the front end of the CG range. They may improve as my flying skills with the plane improve. They will definately improve as I get the plane cleaned up with wheel pants, spinner, properly trimmed, etc. Since I removed the spinner due to a crack on the first flight, the oil temp has been running consistantly about 20 degrees warmer. It generally tops out at 200 - 205 degrees. I attribute this to a distrupted airflow into the cooling inlets with the spinner off. The oil temp does not come back down when running at reduced throttle settings. This is the last flight update I will post until I get some mods done to the airplane or unless I find something significant in the test flying program. I would be happy to answer any questions I can pertaining to my limited experience with this plane or about my plane specifically, but there are others in this conference that have a great deal more KR flying time than me that probably also have more to contribute based on their experiences. For those that normally don't fly up in the mountain states, if the performance numbers look low to you, keep in mind that I am flying from an airport at 7150' above sea level. That kind of altitude takes away much of the engine's horsepower and the speed numbers will typically true out to 10 - 20 mph faster. Once I get the plane trimmed up and cleaned up (aerodynamically speaking) I intend to either buy or borrow a GPS to get some more accurate performance numbers. regards, Jeff Scott Los Alamos, New Mexico (USA) - ---- Jeffrey Scott jscott.pilot@juno.com See construction of KR-2S N1213W at http://fly.hiwaay.net/~langford/kjeffs.html - ---- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 22:17:24 EDT From: jscott.pilot@juno.com (Jeffrey E. Sorry, Brian, but I haven't flown a KR-2, so I can't make any comparison's for you. You'll have to listen to your gut instinct and build the plane you want the way you want it. Most of us have made similar mistakes. I think Mark Langford will have thrown out two KR's to build his one before he's done :o) , but he's a perfectionist (from my point of view). All of us have either thrown out what used to be good parts, or had to re-engineer parts to fix our mistakes. Do you think you could possibly sell two perfectly good KR-2 sides while they are completely open and easily inspected. Might sell quickly as project seed at the KR gathering. > >I really don't feel like building new fuselage sides, but I just don't >know what to do. Do what your wife said! Its not your fault, that's the biggest complaint about those darn pans is how each bay is called out in inches instead of overall length of the fuselage! ARGH!!! The first thing every builder should do is cross them out and just use the total inches. Do you have the ply wood skins on yet? The most highly stressed members in the fuselage structure are in and around the spar attachements. The next are in the firewall area. The most highly stressed members that I could find were on the order of 2500-3000 psi under a 6G load. Spruce will begin to fail at approximately 5000 psi (pounds per square inch). There is a lot of margin to failure. Being an engineer means that the glass is neither half full, nor half empty. Personally , I think they sneak in at night when the lights are off!!! you asked for opinions so I'll through mine out for consideration. I would keep what you have and add the 14" to the tail. I would take out the last upright, add the 14" with a butt joint. Run a doubler on the bottom side of the top longeron with the appropriate overlap. A part of these longerons get doubled later in the project anyway. Run a doubler on the top side of the bottom longeron with appropriate overlap at the joint and either all the way to the tail or not at your liking. I see no need to make it full length but only to strengthen the joint. This will change the length of the uprights at the doubled area and change slightly the webs for mounting the horizonal stablizer, but I can't think of any other problems. The bottom longeron will have ply on two sides and the top on one side. I pulled all of this out of my head without looking at the plans so check it out first. I'm not an engineer but I don't think your fuselage will be any weaker at that point and I don't suppose you will be adding more than 6 to 8 oz. of wood and glue. Ah, added weight, the price we pay for mistakes. I'd sure think it over a bit before tossing out what you have now. If someone more knowledgable sees a problem here, please point it out. Just my humble opinion. Remember, opinions are like a certian body part. EVERYBODY HAS ONE!!!! Mike, You are an Aviation Animal! When we get to the KR Gathering, I want to sit down and really pick your brain. I like you, just love the P-51D Mustang. It has been and will continue to be my favorite aircraft of all time. I won't tell you now via E-Mail, all that is on my mind about the Mustang. That would take too much time. I'll bring my hard file to the gathering; let's plan on getting together for breakfast one morning and I will share my thoughts with you on the KR51/P-51B/D. Just for starters, see if you can find the October, 1983 issue of SPORT AVIATION. It features the BEACHNER V-8 Special. This guy took the basic KR concept and expanded it into a better aircraft It reeks with P-51B/D, FW-190, ME-109, Etc. In your defense, WAR was not the first to come up with the idea. If you don't have the time to find this issue/article, send me your mailing address and I will forward a copy of it to you. Take care, Jim SKYTECH Innovations, Inc.
