However, Revmaster does not recommend using the CHT theromcouples that go under the plugs as they won't survive a plug change (?). I hope this helps! This would mean that it's OK to splice the KR spar at midpoint and also OK to saw the center spar in half at midpoint on a suitable diagonal. If you then attached it together again temporarily, you could build the complete wing on the spar while it was the workbench, either removing it from the fuselage after mounting the stub wing ribs or (tricky) building the wing before building the boat at all. With a suitable jig for the spar on the workbench, you could invert it instantly and probably get the wings identical more easily than on the boat. Also, you could cut the wings at the wing-attach fittings before you mounted the spar on the boat, so it wouldn't be cumbersome. The downside would be that the reinforcement plates on the spar would add some weight and bulk and would have to avoid the landing gear attachments. You can use, for example, the Great Plains geared hi-torque starter, you just have to buy or manufacture an adaptor plate that goes between the case and starter. They even included an extra 5/8"X14' piece in case of problems with it which I did have to use. One side cracked after bending and it turned out it was a "compression fracture" problem with the piece. It happened to get thru their inspection. I have been very pleased with Wicks product and service having bought the vast majority of my project from them so far. KRNetHeads, My apologies in advance. I hate to do this (since I'm the principal whiner about messages off the subject) but I gotta tell you about this dream I had last night: I was walking down the street and saw a car accident, in which a Lotus 7 was hit by a truck, and the front cowl came flying off. It was still in great shape, and looked like it would work perfectly on my KR2S. The owner told me to take it since the rest of his car was totaled anyway. I called my wife to bring the VW van to town, and then stepped into a local pub for an ale. The locals were passing around a rasterized printout of a drive shaft system for a VW, like the one I keep fretting over. When I asked where he got it, he said "I had to go fishin' for it", and pointed towards a video game in the corner. The flashing game was named "Dan Diehl's fishin' game", and was similar to those confounded computer games that you can waste months of your time on while trying to collect some bitmapped trinkets to ever find the end. I started putting quarters in, but got nowhere. The oldtimer locals were amused and were howling with glee, but eventually felt sorry for me and came out with a dog-eared set of "directions", which had been hand typed, copied several generations ago. It had been whited out and correctyped to a just barely readable state. This "plan" was just what you needed to unlock the secrets of the game. By following the plan, you could stumble upon lots of KR building tidbits hidden away within the game. I started playing feverishly, hitting the "print" button at every opportunity. Eventually my wife showed up with the van, and the beeping horn woke me up from this nightmare... Will it ever end? Area51Heads, Some folks have asked about the "Area51" KR2S that was displayed at Perry last year. A little detective work turned up the fact that it belongs to Steve Barnes, from Mustang, Oklahoma, but was mostly designed and built by Ray Semple (405-737-3226) of Midwest City, OKlahoma. Ray's built several airplanes, and is actively building a Tailwing and a Sidewinder at the moment, while flying a Davis V-tail at the moment. Not bad for a man in his 80's. And he sounded much sharper than me, even at that age. His wing is made with no center spar, only long outer wing spars joined in the middle of the fuselage (at the stick) by two 10" wide 1/8" AL plates. Airfoils are a Harry Riblet 35A212 with a 15% root and 12% tip. Incidence was decreased slightly. The retractable nose gear is similar to the Lancair's, while the canopy is pure Dragonfly. Fuselage is similar to the Dragonfly too, except it uses four spruce longerons in conjunction with glass wrapped foam. The longerons are connected with 3/4" and 1/2" Clark foam skins (no spruce truss members or plywood skin) glassed on both sides. He used torque tubes for all controls except the rudder, and mass balanced them all. See this very interesting variant at http://fly.hiwaay.net/~langford/k97gathr.html , or if you're impatient skip to http://fly.hiwaay.net/~langford/97k.jpg , 97x.jpg, 97y.jpg, 97z.jpg, 97ac.jpg, and 97ab.jpg. Ray said he'd be happy to talk to anybody that would listen, and would definitely be at the Gathering again this year. It's from a Kohler industrial engine of the 16 HP persuasion. He machined the flywheel magnets out, made a hub from 8" aluminum pressfit onto the prop hub. He then mounted the stator to the two 6mm holes on each side of what is usually the pulley (the "lower pulley shroud" mounting holes) with a .013" clearance with the flywheel. In terms of using all of it, are people sawing up big pieces to get gussets, or just using scrap they'd otherwise throw out? I've been doing general woodworking for years and notice that lots of scrap wood has small areas that are aircraft quality for a few inches before hitting a knot or whatever. I would think if you're near a lumberyard or woodworker, you could get plenty of gussets out of scrap softwood without cutting any of your real stock and stretch your materials that way. Kerry not only volunteered to scan 50 pages of the old newsletters (and delivered on it too, in jig time!), but has now located a guy with an industrial-strength scanner who can do the _whole_job in the time it takes me to visit the library and pour a cup of coffee. This guy is incredible! John Bouyea compiled all of the back KRNet archives and sent them on a CD for us, as well as included various goodies like a complete index of Sport Aviation articles back to 1966, searchable by article title or keyword (it works; I tried it). Of course, you gotta have the magazines to read the articles, but that's what those boxes in my garage are for, right? And, John did it all while staggering around with the flu or something. Talk about dedication! So here's where it stands: the newsletters should be all scanned and back in my 300MHZ Pentium II for conversion to .pdf before the Ides of March, optimistically speaking. I have 100 CD blanks with jewel cases and cardboard mailers, my Neat-O CD labeling kit is ready to label, and I have currently 40 or 42 names on the list. In about a week, I will e-mail each of you privately (those who have expressed interest) asking for your mailing address (I have about 1/3 or 1/2 already), and will start making up mailing labels. Once I get the postage cost, I will tally up and see where we are dollar-wise, but it should be less than what you pay for Chumbawumba's latest release on CD down at Musicland. This thing is going to happen! So, you will get the old KR Newsletters 1 through 100 or so with index, the KRNet archives at least through 1997, Neil Bingham's articles on the KR, an index of back issues of Sport Aviation, Mark Langford's treatise on the history of the KR, plus several other sundry other goodies... compiled as Volume I of the KRNet Traveling Resource Library. I, an accomplished artist in my own right ;o), am concocting the tasteful labels myself (sorry; no Melody Mountains). It looks like if we survive this, Volume II will definitely chronicle the development of The Alternative Wing (nee NLF), and first flights of Mike Mims' and Mark Langford's KRs. Thanks to all of you. as Yakov Smirnoff says, "I love this country!"
