The "decision makers" on the location for the next year's event will be the attendees at this year's gathering. Since this is the second year at Perry, we are ripe for a new location. The pre-registration form on Brain Bland's web page has a place to suggest a site for next year's gathering, and the question will be asked again when you check in at Perry. I want to use these suggestions to base a discussion on, rather than have one loud voice say "Let's have it here again!!" and let the momentum carry it on to force a quick decision. There are quite a few folks that attend the gatherings that don't do computers, so there are going to be some good ideas out there that we don't discuss here online. Someone suggested having several gatherings across the country -- GREAT idea. I, like alot of you, will want to attend them all, especially once my airplane is finished. More importantly, wannabe builders are much more likely to attend a local event. One important thing to consider, though.... If you suggest a new location, be prepared to host the Gathering yourself, or have the name of some unsuspecting "volunteer" in your hip pocket.... ;o) Cheers, Rick Junkin EagleGator@aol.com richard.m.junkin@boeing.com St. Charles MO ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 22:03:26 -0500 From: "Mark Langford" Subject: Re: KR: landing light tip Bobby Muse wrote: > Please, send it to all of us. What is the desired RPM for the EA81? Isn't 4000rpm something like 70hp? If that's the case and you figure in a 10% loss in hp through the redrive you could be down to 63 hp or thereabouts. If you need more engine RPM (IE more HP) how would a larger prop help? Also what percentage of mach is your prop speed? Some of the prop building books I have say that at max rpm the prop tip speed should be 80% of mach. Something to think about. After looking your website over again I saw your intake for cooling air just aft of the trailing edge on the belly. Do you think the drag caused by the scoop could be contributing to the nose down pitching moment? Also you might find that there is a higher pressure available right at the trailing edge of the wing or 10% into the chord (from the aft end). Its kinda hard to tell where the intake for the scoop actually begins. Anyway keep us posted on future performance values. Your a lucky dude to be flying your project! You will never solve it unless you take the approach offered by someone to have two or more fly-ins per year....spread geographically. You could designate the fall event as the RAND sponsored event and alternate it between east/west/middle. The other event (or two) would be at different times (spring/summer, etc) Personally, only one KR event per year is too little. Several other smaller events spread out to get more builders/flyers involved would help everyone PS...Last September I was offered a ride in a taildragger KR. I seemed to have lost the number (big surprise when you look at my filing piles). Since I am basically competent again in taildraggers, now would be a good time to get some KR time. The aileron feel is neither heavy or extremely light. I do get good feed back at differing speeds. The responsiveness seems to get soft when slow flighting as one might expect. This causes an adrenalin rush sometimes when coming in slow in gusty weather and the wing drops and seems to be a little slow recovering. Overall the plane handles pretty well but I wouldn't recommend it to a very low time pilot. I have noticed that it doesn't seem to want to ground loop like a lot of tail draggers do. I pretty well taught myself how to fly in taildraggers in this bird. If I could change the control feel I would like to reverse the pitch and the roll. Otherwise have a little less pitch response and about the same amount more roll response. Hope this is of some use. Let me know if you need any more information I may be able to provide. By the way my bird is pretty well built from the plans with few modifications. I am using a 1835 single ignition (mag) with a Ray Jay turbo charger. It cruises at about 160-165 mph at 3500 rpm and 34 inches of map. I can carry 18 gal of fuel in the header tank and I designed my own capacitive fuel gauge which is accurate to within .5 gal.
