I think I will try some of the stuff you found and see how it compares. B*ndo cures fast and is easy to sand, but it will leave ridges to. When I use it, I 'try' not to get it near the edge. Hot glue works well also, but it is almost impossible to sand if you get messy with it. I found some one-part foam in a spray can at Home Depot called "Great Stuff". It is used to seal gaps around door frames, electrical boxes, etc. for insulation purposes. It works great to hold the foam together and sands at almost the same rate as foam. The only bad part is that once you use the can, you can't keep the rest of it for more than a week or 2. Aircraft grade is clear; no knots, is quarter-sawn which yeilds a grain direction that optimizes the strength in both directions. It also has X grains per inch, 10 I think. The Wicks catalog has a good description of aircraft grade requirements. Hope this helps. Flutter is a damn serious thing, generally it don't leave you the chance to tell about your adventure drinking a beer. I'll make all my effort to avoid this. And the only thing I can do is balancing all my surfaces. If necessary, I'll leave in my hangar some beautiful but unnecessary instrument, but I'll take some "dummy" balance weight. If you get clear sitka spruce through your local lumber yard, one piece out of every ~20 will be aircraft grade. What are you planning of doing with the 19 that are not good enough? It is easier to find aircraft grade fir, by picking through available stock. The price will be lower, but the weight will be higher. The cost of wood is a relatively small fraction of the cost of your project. - -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 10:52:46 -0400 From: eugene gargasz Subject: Re: KR: Spuce This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------2119D0586EE342E6E2078B98 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Trent Flemming wrote: > Hi Group, > > I have recieved my plans for the KR-2S (no thanks to UPS). most. After you send a subscribe message, Majordomo tells you to send a confirm message to an address it gives, which is SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT from the one it's writing from, so hitting "reply" doesn't work. I figured that one out, but then I got a message that my name: "has been forwarded to the owner of the "krnet-l" list for approval," possibly because I "might have asked to subscribe to a "closed" list, where all new additions must be approved by the list owner. " Haven't gotten an answer yet, so I guess this means Majordomo (or Ross?) is investigating me now to see if I'm of sound moral character. Assuming I make it, I plan to dump AOL, since every other list I want to keep is already on Juno. There is an address they give for questions about the KR-Net admissions process: "krnet-l-approval@lists.teleport.com" I'm hoping I won't need this. It was expensive the last time I looked. I got a some from the Boeing surplus store here in Seattle some time back. Trouble with Boeing is it is a hit or miss. Sometimes they have great stuff and other times they don't. With out a vacuum bag set up nomex is very difficult to get a good bond with the glass. You need to get good contact with all of the edges of the nomex honeycomb. Without a vacuum bag you get more glue then necessary in some spots and not enough in others. But the stuff sure makes a light weight stiff composite. Marvin McCoy >> I was more interested in the finished sandwich. It could be used for the seatback, canopy bow and maybe the instrument panel. I have tanks in the stubs which are constructed of last-a-foam and plywood. Another thing to consider if you are planning on trying polystyrene is that you can only use epoxy based resins on it. Polyester resin will also melt blue foam. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims SP290,.. Austin Clark >> Austin, Since I am not flying my info may not quite answer your question but I'll take this opportunity to relay some info (steal some thunder) from Tom Crawford. BIGGER (like godzilla) is better. Austin, with the fact that most of us are now using bigger and heavier engines than were originally called for, more trim is required to hold the nose up in trim. That weight plus people doing what I'm doing and moving the engine 2" forward on a standard KR, I believe the trim tab could be on the small size. If you are going to add I'll go at it with "bubba engineering" and say add some length onto it. I believe this may be a case that, since you are not adding any weight, more just might be better. Like gasoline, I'd be better to have it there and not need it than not have it and need it. Anyway, Tom said that if he had to do it over again, he'd make it bigger. I could have just said that to begin with, huh. :-)) 'Bout right Tom?
