He seemed like a great guy. NSI has had some problems of late, I was considering going with a Soob conversion, but NSI returned my $10.00 after 5 months. I don't think they are in the catalog business, and want to sell entire engine packages, not parts. So I decided to go with the older VW approach, and wait out until more approaches to cooling and reduction had been worked on. I think that there are some good alternatives out there. I read recently where someone used a Air conditing evaporator either for water or oil cooling and it worked great. I took a project planning class for work, and having nothing to plan, I did my KR project. For the next six months, progress ZOOMED by. I was ordering stuff ahead of time as I could afford it, an always had somthing to do. Eventually I got burned out, so now I do my best to just be patient, and work on the project when work, family and all the other garbage don't get in the way. You will need a slow speed drill press, a circular saw with a abrasive cut off wheel, a good unibit, a bench grinder, a belt sander and the 4130 stock from AS&S (or other supplier) that is already the correct width (top to bottom as mounted on the spar). When cutting the 4130 stock to length I was able to make the cut with one pass, it did get warm but since I could touch it right after cutting I decided it wasn't enough heat to worry about. The key to drilling the holes (the big ones) is to use a good unibit ($60+ dollar range) and very slow RPM and lots of oil. What ever you do "DO NOT" buy a sheet of 4130 and expect to cut the WAFs out from the sheet. You will give up in a matter of minutes, I promise! You may also want to consider getting a metal cutting band saw. I have a "Chinese" cutoff saw that can take about 4" between the blade and the body of the saw. It was about $150-$200 and is well worth it. I think it may be just a matter of where you have room for it. One thing nice about it being inside is you can actually hear it when its running (at least I can in the Dragonfly). Anything you can find will work better than the stuff RR sells! :o) I like T88 for wood work and EZ-Poxy for glass work. I used Aeropoxy but have to say I like EZ-Poxy better. There have been a couple of KRs built with West Systems but just a few years ago West Systems was NOT recommended for structural fiberglass layups on composite aircraft. I think maybe that has changed now,... for some unknown reason. West is a great system and the availability is really nice! The smell of burning insulation and the subsequent "smoke in the cockpit", and there was a lot of it, was more that enough to get my attention. For structeral layups on the KR they work great wood to wood. Dana, Glad it all worked out OK. Been there and done that with an engine barfing it's innerds out at night. What a shot of adrenalin. :o) To make a point about knowing and executing your emergency checklist, a friend recently made a dead stick landing on a highway after the single magneto engine suddenly quit. He went through the checklist in his mind, but never actually cycled any switches. The prop windmilled all the way to the ground. After landing on the highway, he cycled the mag switch and found that the switch was half on and had simply grounded out. One cycle on the switch and the engine readily started. Of course by then the highway patrol and newscameras were on scene to provide to proper level of embarrassment. BTW, we flew 93 Young Eagles today.
