- ------=_NextPart_000_001A_01BDE4BC.0F4C86E0-- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 16:06:58 -0700 From: Ross Youngblood Subject: KR: Perry Photographs uploading.... Wow! I have been sooo busy the last few days at the KR Gathering. I snagged a nap this afternoon, as my plane doesn't leave OKC until 8:00PM local. I am uploading RAW Perry '98 Gathering Photos, and will start to work on our new http://www.krnet.org webpage later today on the airplane. Most of the photos are 46K in size, but a couple are larger. There is one photo of a tygon tubing fuel line installation. Please don't do this on your airplane. Tygon tubing will melt if it gets hot enough, and is not fire resistant, so it makes for a risky fuel route when it gets near the exhaust manifold in the foreground of the photo. Again, these are RAW photos... I don't captions or web stuff around them, go to http://www.teleport.com/~rossy/perry98 for an index of the files that have made it so far. - -- Ross ------------------------------ Date: 20 Sep 1998 17:46:51 -0700 From: Ron Lee Subject: KR: 1998 Gathering: My thoughts Once again I drove (sigh). This time I left in time to get there while it was light. Unfortunately, no rides were being given. After a while, I discovered the ride sign-up list. To my horror, I was #35. With it likley that I would have to leave my midday saturday, I was doubtful that I would get a ride. To make matters worse, two of the desired planes to get time in had mechanical problems. Thusly discouraged, I left early to my small romm at Days Inn (but only $30). I arrived early the next day hoping to get some time in but most pilots seemed to wait unti the 900 AM briefing. I guess that is so the winds can pick up and air get turbulent. Things are really looking bad now. But one person interceded and was able to get Randy Smith to give me some time. Allalujah. But there is no second stick! Never fear.. Randy found a wood dowel and improvised a makeshift control stick. Of course being a non-standard configuration initially affected my flying. If you are not familiar with Randy's plane, it is yellow and powered by a Continental O-200 with a BIG metal prop. It has a modified turtle- deck with windows. It looks a lot different than most KRs. Anyway, Randy takes off with me in the right seat. After he gets it up high enough and trimmed, I take over. Despite knowing about the responsiveness, I end up chasing the pitch around. Probably did not have my hand firmly planted in my leg. Randy takes over and restabilizes the plane and I try again. The up and down motion repeated itself and I am beginning to think I have a plane I will never fly. I'll kill myself if I fly it like this. So I verify it is a -2S and it is. What have I done? Randy stabilizes the plane a second time and i try again. This time I nail it. Not the best at left turns (it wants to climb) but I basically fly it well. After a 10 minutes of turns I tell Randy it is time to go back (I made myself a bit sick). I am still wondering why I am so inept at flying it. Has all the flying in a Champ where you push the stick forward a foot or more hurt my sense of control? I flew 133RM with Roy Marsh with no problems. I even stalled it and recovered easily. Something is different now. On the ground I discussed it with Randy and he notes that with the two of us onboard, we were somewhere near the aft CG limit...which supposedly makes the pitch control somewhat more sensitive than at a more forward CG. I sure hope that is true because otherwise I have lost my ability to handle a KR. My plan now is to get mine airborne in the morning then fly at low speeds (under 100 mph) until I am proficient at handling it. Then I can land it or at least make a semi-controlled crash at the airport. May have to ensure enough fuel to get to Colorado Springs in case I need "the equipment". Oh well, the saga of the ground-bound KR drags on. Oops. Forgot to discuss other aspects of the gathering. This year the winds were better. I don't know if everyone got to fly in a KR. Maybe Rick will report on that. Certainly getting stick time is a must for someone getting close to flying. There is no substitute for flying a KR that I know of. Perhaps others know if any other planes easily available are similar in responsiveness. My preference is to fly early before winds, heat and turbulence make the flying. The other option is in the late afternoon when it cools down. Of course if you have the gathering at a time of year that is not hot it helps. Mark's fiberglass forum was well attended. Must have been at least thirty folks there. I had to leave before the engine rebuild unfortunately. If that entire process gets in the video, I will buy one for sure. I saw some of the air to air footage shot from a Tri-Pacer. Really nice. I saw Jeff Scott, Jim Faughn, and Marty Roberts. As I was leaving, the flyover for the town fair was in progress. Looked really good guys. - ------=_NextPart_000_001D_01BDE4CF.96EFC0E0-- ------------------------------ Date: 20 Sep 1998 17:53:55 -0700 From: EagleGator@aol.com Subject: KR: KR Gathering Prizes, comments Well, gang, here it is, the wee hours of the morning in Perry Oklahoma, and another KR Gathering has concluded. Here are some of the highlights: As for this year's gathering, it went pretty well. Airplane problems and weather (winds, turbulence) combined to make the ride-giving a bit scarce. The Friday night barbecue was well attended, and Don Betchan and his family once again put on a feast of BBQ brisket and chicken for everyone. The keg of beer was only half empty at the end of the evening, so we'll have to work a little harder at it next year. There was also entertainment provided by Jim Faughn, who arrived with his guitar and an original "KR Pilot Song". You'll have to ask him for a copy.... Saturday's agenda was pretty slow paced, with one seminar (Mark Langford, Composite Basics) in the morning and three seminars (Steve Bennett, VW Engine Assembly; Rick Junkin, Flight Test Primer; Dana Overall, Poly Fiber Finishing Process) in the afternoon. I heard good words about all of the seminars from the folks who attended. On the flying side, there was a mass KR flyby of downtown Perry by almost all of the KR's in attendance. This was done as a part of the local celebration of the anniversary of the land rush. The day at the airport concluded with a short takeoff/spot landing contest. Winds were fairly stiff, which made for an interesting contest. The banquet was held Saturday evening, with LOTS of (OK, too many) door prizes. The majority of the people in attendance walked out with either a Wicks or AS&S catalog, and a few other goodies. Ross Youngblood presented some great door prizes in the name of KRNet, with thanks going to Randy Stein for the name tags and soliciting door prizes. The traditional awards came out as follows: Best KR-2: Calvin Campbell Best Workmanship: Calvin Campbell People's Choice Award: Bobby Muse Jr. Oldest KR Pilot: Bob Muse Sr. Longest Distance Traveled (by KR): Bob Muse Sr. Youngest Pilot: Jeff Scott Spot Landing Contest: Tom Glaeser Editor's Choice: Les Palmer The decision made at the banquet was for Dana Overall to host the 1999 Gathering at Kentucky Dam. The dates will be set after Dana has a chance to check on the availability of facilities and lodging there. Just for info, the other locations that were suggested were El Paso TX and Mt. Vernon IL. I would expect Mt. Vernon to be a serious player for the 2000 Gathering. That's about it for the formal stuff, but there were a lot of conversations among individuals about a lot of the subjects we discuss regularly here on KRNet. I'll leave those to the rest of the KRNetters who were in attendance. Overall, a successful event. Don't miss next year!!! I was trying to get you into a plane where you could at least get some work. You'll have to trust me on this, but you plane probably flies much better with two people than Randy's does. Your plane will also fly much, much better with one person than it did with you and Roy both in it. You'll probably wonder why you waited so long. There is no question that as the CG moves aft, it gets much more sensative and unstable in pitch. By yourself your plane, I doubt that you will have much of a problem. My recommendations for your first flight. Know your airspeed numbers. Try not to chase the plane, but if you do porpoise a little during climbout, keep it in the numbers where it will fly while you continue your climbout to a safe altitude to do some slowflight and slow cruise work. Spend about 30 - 45 minutes doing air work feeling out the plane, then land before you are exhausted. The adrenelin from the anticipation will wear you out. That will subside with time in the plane. Practice your approach and slowflight speeds at altitude so you know what numbers will work and what the plane feels like. Keep your approach speed to the known numbers. Too fast of an approach will leave you porpoising over the runway while you try to scrub off speed. If you fly the approach at the numbers you know should work, the plane lands very easily. Most of all, HAVE FUN!!!. This is more of a psychological hurdle for you than a lack of skill. Enjoy the experience and build your confidence. If you can fly a KR with two people in it in the aft end of the CG range, you're ready to fly your own. Once you're comfortable, come visit me!
