This was a weekend for the books. The Supra popped the radiator just East of Amarillo Tx. we tried to push on but it rapidly became apparent that it was hopeless. A friendly Hiway patrol guy called a tow truck. $85 later we met a guy at a radiator shop. Since it was already about 5:30 in evening we went to a motel and bright and early the next day, I got the word: the plastic tank on top the radiator had cracked. "There's one in Dallas and they'll put it on the bus, be here in the morning" Not good enough! we discussed options. Me and my passenger decided that if it was Saturday morning, then we'd just go home, but wait!!! Have the guy in Dallas drive it to the airport and put it on a plane to Amarillo, we'll rent a car and go get it. So, we did that, and managed to arrive in Perry at 8:30 Friday nite, too late for the Bar-B-Q. Saturday was great. Sunday was leaving day, But, I finally managed to get a ride in Martin Roberts KR2. Well worth the trip. Guess what? The Supra overheated again in the same town on the way back. But we discovered the problem was it was just out of coolant (???!!!!) found no trace of leaks and no evidence of water in the oil. I bought a gallon of anti-freeze and 3 gallons of water, filled it up and drove it the last 350 miles no problems. I'm going to have it checked out for leaks this week. I've got a water cooled engine on the KR!! I'll definitely get that cooling system right before I fly it. He managed to wrangled his whole extended family into working like dogs to keep all us KRphiles happy, fed and comfy. Great hometown OK hospitality once again. Hats off to Rick Junkin for also "swimming" upstream and making the event flow smoothly. Rick - YOU THE MAN!!!! The whole affair was once again safe and fun. Marty, Jeff, Randy and others worked hard to get some ride missions fulfilled. Never an easy task, given the large number of folks who signed up. Dan and Melody Mountains have been replaced by our own KRPrincess. Rob Covington gets all of the KRedit on this one. He brought the sweetest travelling companion Haris and I could have ever asked for. Lylah Hill(s) has been nominated, voted and accepted (I learned this trick from Monte Miller) as the official KRKosh 99 Princess. As the four of us parted company in the great SWA hub shuffle in PHX earlier this evening, she promised me that she would be in Kentucky to hold court over us next year. I'll tell ya whot, forget the KR's, just come to meet this sweetheart and you'll go home with a smile too! The KRKosh stuff will just be the whipcream to top the weekend off. I'm not sure who had the biggest poo poo-eating grin: Marty, Rob or Lylah. The KRNet contributions were a bit lean this year…so it is time for everyone who may have not had a chance to toss a few greenbacks into the 'ol KRNet bucket to do so now. Video Bob did his usual contribution for support for each video sold (just mentioned KRNet or order through the KRNET.org website). Do help out by mentioning KRNet when you order the video from Bob. It helps to support the very existence of our beloved mail list. Don't forget he also has the KRKosh 97 seminar tapes done and ready for you. If you missed seeing these seminars live, then this is the next best thing. Did I mention you should say you are from KRNet? Was I wrong about the engine needing to be at idle? Did Marty have to clear his engine cuz of carb ice? :) Sure is nice to be able to recognize specific planes now. And to think I was just yards away during the filming of Jeff's plane. I can even recognize some instrument panels or aviator bears! I don't know if video Bob can do this but footage of a KR doing a low pass and pull up from another plane sure would look good. Or mounting a camera in a KR might work as well. Ron ------------------------------ Date: 21 Sep 1998 07:20:16 -0700 From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Subject: KR: 1999 Gathering-long There has been a lot said already (and I'm sure more will be said) about the successful 1998 Gathering so I won't go into this much other than to say thanks Don (even if he's not on computer) and it was great putting KRnet faces to .com addresses. As Thursday progressed into Friday and Friday into Saturday the groundswell grew pretty quickly among the diehard KR gang that Kentucky Dam State Park would be a great place for the 1999 Gathering. Believe me, if I talked with one person about an alternate site, 30 people approached me with "this would be a good place". For those of you who have not been to a KR Gathering (I'll get to that in a minute), a vote is taken at the banquet for the next year's location. Discussion is held throughout the weekend with anyone interested in hosting the event. This is not a KRnet thing nor is it a builder thing or pilot thing, everyone there has a vote in the final decision. There is no rivalry between persons willing to host the event, but believe me, several sites were discussed. Here lately the host of the event, if he is willing and the vote to stay is in the majority, has keep the event for two years. I hope those who attend the 1999 Gathering will be please with event and hope that I am not burned out and would be willing to throw my name back into the hat. I made it a point to talk with people, pilots, builders, enthusiasts and prospective builders about what they would like to see at a gathering. Believe me everyone has their own opinion. Pilots want the people out on the ramp watching the flying and looking at their airplane. Other people said we should limit pilots to one airplane in the air at a time so that they could look at the completed airplanes more. Builders want more seminars, prospective builders need to stroked. I heard from people that we don't need seminars, just flying and hanging out. I heard from people that seminars need to go on all throughout the day, maybe even on Friday. So you can see, the gathering is not just for the pilots, nor just for builders, nor just for those looking to build but a gathering of all those interested in the KR and something for everyone to do, be it flying their airplanes and hanging out with old friends, holding seminars or just making yourself available. It all accomplises the same thing and that is the advancement of the KR design. I personally like the seminars as it gets the new builders, or prospective builder more into the event and I think he, in turn, gets more out of the gathering. I won't be able please everyone, nor can I listen to just one person. Now, I've moaned and groaned enough here's the deal. I plan on making the 1999 KR Gathering an event where there will something for everyone throughout the weekend. Pilots will be flying, there will be an organized seminar schedule that will continue throughout the day but hopefully not structured so as to restrict any one segment of the attendees. It will be a fun event but one at which you can get whatever you came for out of it. I plan on gathering information from the pilots who always go the gatherings. This also a great oppurtunity for those of you on the KRnet to relay to the next coordinater, what you would like to see at the event. I can't promise anything but I will assure you I will not dismiss your comments either. Guys, make a commitment to attend this gathering. I believe you will flat out have a big time, it's going to be fun. Mike, we already talked to Ross about a west coast formation but then dismissed it because he would have to throttle back that 1835 VW :-)). Larry, I'll gladly accept your help for the southern IL. gang. I'll keep everyone, the builder (thru Rand Robinson) the newsletter gang, the KRnetter, the currect pilots and the registered attendees for the 98 gathering posted as events come together. Quick note about KY Dam, 4000 foot runway, lodge rooms from $55-$65 per room, cabins and houses from $110 for a two bedroom cabin to something like $145.00 for a three bedroom house with a garage in the woods. Let me know guys, but please off the KRnet, what your ideas are. I won't know them unless you tell me. It turns out that Teleport installed a new mail software package last week or so, and that appears to be the root cause of our repeat messages. There are other issues as well, but they "have someone working on it". Post any problems to me directly at krnet@krnet.org to keep the list traffic down if you can remember. Regarding unsubscribing, you can have it done imeediately if you email majordomo@teleport.com with the message unsubscribe krnet-l myfull@email.address end If you leave anything out, it won't work. If you send the word "unsubscribe" to krnet-l it comes to me eventually, but if I only check email weekly, it can take a week or so for you to get unsubscribed. The above method is the only way to imeediately get pulled off the list. I had a great time at Perry, but I don't think I was at 100% I think I slept all day today just to catch up! And also why you might want to be widening it. ;) LOL Jim Faughn, if you are still on this list, your song is stuck in my head. "we are fly-ers... We are flyyyy-ers..." $#%@ :) I mean stuck! I thought "It's a Small World" from the 20 minutes of a Disney ride was the tops, but.. Think I will have to turn on a loud compressor or something and see if my brain will reset to the normal noise. :) Robert ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 20:28:33 -0500 From: "Mark Langford" Subject: KR: send us your weight and balance sheets? From all the comments, sounds like Gathering 98 was a big success. I have been busy fabricating a cowling mold and just up dated my web page with photos of my progress. I have not glassed it yet, but plan to do that by this week end. I also changed my seat design making it closer to plans. New photos are on my Emgine and Cowling link and on my Cockpit link if anyone would like to take a look. Man I miss one gathering and look what happens! So here is the deal, tonight I am sending Ross a check for $15 dollars and I challenge anyone with a smaller engine on this list to meet or beat that donation. Lets see,...last time I checked that would be ALL OF YOU! :o) I know some of you get a lot out of this list, some of you get a little and some of you want to get off the list but I think those of us who enjoy sharing the info and even doing a little hanger talking should divvy up some of our hard earned cash to keep it going for another year. I think we need about $200 or so to accomplish this and Ross should not have to pay this on his own, mostly because its OUR list. The KRnet, and for that matter the newsletter guy, were not able to forward the benefits available at the banguet. The bucket came up short on cash. Guys, don't wait for the next guy to do it, keep this thing afloat and make your "donation" to Ross......any amount will help, but man, you can surely pull $10.00 or $15.00 worth of information per year off this list. It was nice to see the show of hands at the banquet of people who had heard of the KRnet, there were probably half of the attendees who raised their hands. So let see some support here and be a donor (no organs here). I guess it depends on how you define "a little low". We didn't collect enough to cover all of the expenses, but then we didn't have all 200+ KRNetters there, either. I agree with Mike, each of us knows how invaluable this list is, so please, everyone pitch in what you can to keep it going. End of commercial! Does anybody know of an alternate or unlisted site where they are still accessible, or how to get in touch with him, or have them archived yourself? I'd appreciate it. Side note: one benefit to getting the 'digest' version of krnet is that since it's not a teleport problem, the digest hasn't included the multiple or 'echo' posts.
