It was tremendous. My thanks to Don and all the others who did so much to make it a success. The Gathering reminds me of an EAA meetibg in the early days at Rockford, IL, when I lived in Evanston. Nice people and everyone was interested in helping others. EAA is truly a victim of its own success. This year, I tried to take one system at a time and digest what others have done. I think this is especially important now, because I feel this airplane is in transition now and those just getting started could benefit greatly from the experience of those whose projects will finish in the next two years. Perhaps a short forum by each builder of what he did in certain major areas and why would be of help to others, and do away with many repetitions. My problem is that two years ago I got into writing a book for businesses about what the President of BP calls the "triple bottom line" - management taking in environment, energy, and economics at the same time. The necessary study shows why oil prices must go UP in a few years, why but not when. This should make the small airplane even more attractive than the gas-guzzlers of other types. Now, I simply must carve out more time for my project. Again, thanks to everyone who was so helpful in answering my questions. Rex Ellington Rex T. I don't know when I will have time to post them however. There is some concern here among the majordomo owners list (a group of folks at Teleport who run majordomo lists like krnet-l) that the repeat message problem is due to the new mail software Teleport installed called "Qmail". Several other lists have been reporting repeat posts since the installation of Qmail, and Teleport has a Qmail consultant working on it. I believe a problem with Teleport's Qmail could explain why the digest only gets one copy (majordomo only sends one), but Qmail re-sends duplicate posts to some, so you might get duplicate digest emails for example. I have not seen too many duplicate posts recently, but if this remains a problem, I can switch folks to the digest for the time being. Send email direct to krnet@krnet.org requesting this, or if you are majordomo literate... send the email to mailto:majordomo@teleport.com Body Text: subscribe krnet-l-digest myemail@address unsubcribe krnet-l myemail@address end Majordomo will unsubscribe you automaticly, but I will have to approve the subscribe request (1day-1week delay). So here is my tale of sorrow. About 6 months ago I purchased a couple of unfinished projects. One of which was a KR2 which had been flying and damaged in a landing accident. I'm trying to decided what I am going to do here as I am not an experienced builder/rebuilder. The owner had started on repairing this machine, and had put on Diehl fixed gear. But the wings need to be redone. Also needs a new canopy as the original was damaged in transit home from the accident site. So I need to either repair the wings I have. Don't know a thing about fiberglass. Or buy a new set of wings. What would you KR people suggest I do. Remember this is the first time I have gotten into this. I am a pretty good wrench on engines. But the rest of it might just be rocket science. I sure would like to learn I'm thinking I'm either going to fix and fly this thing, or I'm going to sell it. Any and all replies about this is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from, and meeting you people here. I think it would be fun to fly into one of your gatherings. Try the nearest EAA chapter, other people on the KRnet, etc. None of the things that need to be done are very hard, they just require a little knowledge that you don't have yet. - -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 15:07:40 -0700 From: Ross Youngblood Subject: Re: KR: inquiry Sheetsg@aol.com wrote: > > Hello Krnetters: > > I has just joined this list. If you can hook up with your local EAA chapter, you should be able to find a Tech counselor who can assist you in assessing the plan of attack for repairing your KR wings. There are a LOT of repair options available to you today. We have Krnetters (Mike Mimms) who have done some hotwiring for the wings, but you could go back to the tried and true wet layup over foam if it is just a small repair. There are a couple of books you can get through Aircraft Spruce & Speciality, or Wicks aircraft on composite construction. It's really a lot of fun, although it can be a bit messy, it's not quite rocket science and anyone can do it. The most difficult, and heartwrenching part of the job will be cutting away the damage, so you can see what you have got to do. If you want us to comment via email, you could take some photos, then have them scanned at a place like Kinkos, or otherwise put on floppy and email them to us. However this would be much more trouble than getting hooked up with some local EAA or KRNET folks in your area who can help you out. I met a guy at the KR gathering who had a roll of carpeting fall off a forklift and wipe out the left side of the horz stabilizer. Again the hard part for him will be cutting out the old material, so that the repair can begin. There are wing skins you can purchase that are REAL NICE. They save a LOT of time Sanding Sanding... but they cost a but of $$$ up front. Dan Deihl makes a set of skins as well as Rand Robinson. There is also a plan from the Area 51 folks to make skins for the new airfoil available someday, but you would have to move your aft spar to change the angle of incidence. If you can give us the "N" number and/or some photos, I'm sure we help you out. -- Regards Ross rossy@teleport.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 15:26:43 -0700 From: Micheal Mims Subject: Re: KR: inquiry At 12:31 PM 9/27/98 EDT, you wrote: >So I need to either repair the wings I have. Second I would repair the wings if the outer wings still look good. The typical damage with the retractable gear is the ole punch up through the stub wing trick. Here is a summary of whats in this email message 1) Teleport Rates & Our financial situation. 2) Duplicate Emails (Still) 3) How to unsubscribe/Digest 4) Net Etiquette/Dead Horses If you could care less about admin stuff just delete this message, there is nothing of value in it actually (KR wise). I am actually also testing KRNET to make sure my posts are making it out. (I can see this myself, so PLEASE don't reply) 1) Teleport has raised the rates, but I have come up with an option that only keeps our annual expenses for KRNET & the www.krnet.org $250-300 yr instead of $1,200yr. Part of the reason I could do this is I have a seperate personal account for myself, which means KRNET can use the bare bones account which is $99/mo vs the $250/mo I pay for my personal account annually. The remainder of the cost is in maintaing our www.krnet.org domain presence on the internet. I did some shopping around, but only found a couple of sites that offer majordomo email lists. The domain hosting charges were big bucks at most places. So it turns out that Teleport is it appears still the best site for us. One of the sites is local here in Corvallis,OR, but they only have 1 T1 link to the internet instead of Teleports multiple T3 links. (I don't know what the difference is precicely, but you can bet T3 is better than T1, and more is better). If you saw my panic request for ISP quotes this week it was after I thought briefly that keeping www.krnet.org up on the net was going to cost $99/month. You can guess I was not a happy camper. It turns out that I didn't have to worry, as that was if we wanted our email list to be krnet-l@krnet.org. I think we can live with krnet-l@teleport.com to save about $80/month. I have selected the account setup for the next year, but haven't gotten our Invoice. Once I know what the fees will be I can post that we are set for another year. If you hear we are going month to month, expect more whining for funds, as we get two months free by paying annually. I don't know how important having www.krnet.org is to most of you but to me it means I can transfer the reigns at some time in the future and everyone will be able to find us. (You can move domain names to different Internet Service Providers for a fee). 2) I am still understanding that people will be getting duplicate krnet posts. This is from watching the email list for other mailing lists hosted by Teleport. Teleport installed "qmail" which is an alternate form of mail from the standard UNIX sendmail. At this time, the consultant working on the problem thinks it is limited to mailing lists with digests, but it's not fixed yet. If you are still getting duplicates, or your posts DONT make it to krnet (with a KR: prefix), then email me PRIVATELY at mailto:krnet@krnet.org I want to know, and can forward this information to the consultant who is working on the problem. 3) Unsubscribing from KRNET-L. If you are OVERWHELMED by the email, consider switching to the krnet-l digest. Here is how you can do it yourself. Unsubscribes are imeediate this way, but subscriptions may take a few days, as I have to read them and approve them. mailto:majordomo@teleport.com Subj: Doesnt Matter BODY TEXT: unsubscribe krnet-l my_full@email.address subscribe krnet-l-digest my_full@email.address end This will switch you to the digest, the emails will stop imediately, and you will get a digest email once every day or so whenever the size of all the posts reaches 40K characters in size. 4) I don't feel qualified to enforce any rules of etiquette, as I am probably an offender as often as the next person but here are some general rules to follow: 1) Try not to make any "ME TOO" posts, unless you have somthing of substance to add. Such as your experience with the same problem etc that would fill in the picture for people. 2) Try to change the "Subject" line of the posts if you can to match the topic of discussion, I know this is hard to do, and I often forget myself, but it helps searching the archives. 3) Discover your "Delete key". Somthimes this is easier to do than coming up with a good FLAME reply. 4) Dead Horses Many issues have been discussed on this list and may be considered "dead horses". I invite you to download the back issues of the KRNET by visiting the ARCHIVE link at http://www.krnet.org, and search them with your editor if you find you have hit a "dead horse" landmine. However, I myself consider this list to be in a main part for people considering the KR as a project, and don't mind re-hashing old material. After 10 years working on my project, I have found my opinions changed over time, and think this may happen to others as well. Go ahead and give a dead horse a whack once in a while, it may get up and run. I don't know if I would wade through the archives myself, but it's free information. http://www.krnet.org/krnetfiles.htm I recall early on that someone was removed from the list (I don't recall who nor do I care) for somthing that was posted, this was before I ran the list. I consider this list as the property of the members, and haven't seen removing anyone from this list as somthing worthwile to do. However, if we spend too much time chatting about non-KR activities, I have seen important contributors remove themselves from the list. I may remove you if there is a problem with your server or you have a full mailbox. This will cause the krnet.org email box to overflow with 3000-5000 emails if one or two folks have this problem while others post away. Don't take it personally just email me when you get back, and I will be happy to ad you back in. It helps if you are a frequent poster to KRNET, as I will recognize your email address, and may not unsubscribe you imeediately. Well, I've babbled up another 200+ bytes of garbage for the archives, when I should have been out cleaning my garage.
