Not only does it have hard to find stuff like how to determine the strength of wooden fuselage structures like the KR uses, but it has tables and charts on things that are hard to find (like comparisons between Doug Fir and Spruce, and other more obscure woods). I think he wrote this because he had a hard time pulling all of the "details" together to do aircraft design work, and he thought others would find it useful. There's not a tremendous amount of detail or examples, but it's a definite "must have" if you plan on designing anything that flies. It's available from Wicks, and probably AS&S as well. I have started scanning KR articles from Sport Aviation to add to my web site (not finished yet). In one of the earliest, there is a picture of Ken Rand in the front and someone else in the baggage area of the first KR-1. Ken was a small guy, I suspect that the back-seater was about the same. It is possible to make the KR-1 into a quasi-tandem. So they quit selling 2 place plans as it has been proven that when just the pilot crashes they usually don't sue. Forget where I read this at, BUt you have to find someone who has unused VP-2 plans and buy them, I have seen some listed in the VP News I got as a sample a couple months back. My wife and I have a small organic specialty produce business. We have a small place on 202/9 in Hopkinton, about seven miles or so west of Concord. Widening a KR is a VERY simple ordeal but if you widen it you are forced to build your t-decks from scratch because the pre-molded stuff will not fit. Plus you will have to use the Dragonfly canopy as the KR2S canopy is too narrow and will not flex enough to fit a widened fuselage. This isn't that big of a deal considering the two canopies come from the same plant (some guys garage Im sure!) and the Dragonfly version is about $150 less. There is a outfit in Canada that will build you a Dragonfly canopy for about $250 US. Taglieri) Date: Thu, 24 Dec 1998 00:13:17 EST X-Message-Number: 21 I don't think I'd want such a slow, open cockpit plane -- I go faster than that on my motorcycle -- but I got the impression from the Kitplanes article that they're much easier and cheaper to build than a KR. Obviously, if this isn't so, that changes the analysis quite a bit. I did notice one thing that startled me: the Volksplane Webpage says that some people are getting 3000 hours out of the VW engine on these planes! And they're talking about the standard engine, not one with beefed-up components like the Great Plains engines. That means one of three possibilities: 1. The Volksplane puts these engines under much less stress than the KR does. 2. Sticking the cylinders out in the breeze does a much better job of cooling the heads than a pressure-cowling, and they need to be a hell of a lot cooler than the KR pressure-cowling is getting them. 3. Some Volksplane owners are lying through their teeth. Anybody have ideas on which of these possibilities it is, or are there more? What TBO's are people getting on the other cylinder-in-the-breeze VW designs like the Cub copies?
