Leave it at the entrance to your work area along with a log book and simple "throw the switch" when you start working. I stuck in an outer marker light to show when it was on. Anyway, after you have finished your bird, stick that Hobbs meter in and you've got your 40 hrs.(plus:-). I don't know about varnishing (what wood parts are gonna show?) but the tarp would certainly block the UV. Maybe you should think about the folding wing option, but then you'd be in hock for a garage, which I'll bet is considerably more expensive than a tie-down in NY. Tarps over the wings and canopy should certainly get the job done. UV blocker on the wings and tail will supposedly work too, so now you're just in for a canopy cover. I've seen some pretty neat ones laid up out of fiberglass before the acrylic protective layer was removed from the canopy. Fit's like a glove! Dana can put you on the trail of the Smooth Prime folks, who do the ultimate UV block / prime kit. Here in New Hampshire, cellars run pretty cool. I have a small gas heater, so I have some control over it. How wide may my workshop temperature vary? I know that with T-88 I believe all that happens (perhaps to a point) is that the cure is slowed down in the cold. What are the lowest workshop temperatures I can run and still do good glassing? It was below -10 degrees this morning, I think I'll just read about building today. Storage in some places is a problem, or at least a large long term expense. There are a few VW designs that can fold their wings, allowing you to share hanger space or even drag the thing home. A new design, utilizing somewhat similar construction comes to mind which can be seen at http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Dropzone/5610/ Along with considering the KR I have considered a Sonerai, which looks like it can 'easily' be folded. However this aircraft would require entirely different skills that I don't have as it is metal tubing and aluminum wings. It too is VW powered and within the realm of ordinary folks both to afford and learn the skills necessary. Sorry for the late response, was out of town for the holidays. I thought that article was either going to be shelved or come out months ago. By the way,I don't know if the author (#$%) changed it or not, but that mini KR fuselage mentioned in the draft I read was _not_ a test bed for my full size one, but a 50% shrunk KR for a go-cart. The author wanted an angle for the story in parts, and though I told him that his "angle" wasn't accurate, he still wanted to leave it in for the "angle" because it sounded better than me going off to make something useless during the middle of the beginning of the end of my KR construction. :) I call the Go-Cart a "KR 2 Small". At least _that_ one is boated. :) Robert Covington ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE: Composites From: Mike Mims Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 11:45:29 -0800 X-Message-Number: 7 Steven Welebny wrote: > << glassing?>>> When it gets below 70 degrees I have found EZ Poxy to be very unhappy! :o) I think because AeroPoxy is thicker it would be worse @ 70 degrees. EZ Poxy flows real nice and cures (very solid) in about 24 hours when the temps are between 80 and 90 degrees. So if it is below 70 degrees in your shop I would NOT do any glass work or your parts will end up HEAVY and SOFT. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims SP290 (Sky Pig 290) ,..Building Cowling now mailto:mikemims@home.com http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ Aliso Viejo Ca ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re:Custom Planes Article From: Mike Mims Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 11:49:18 -0800 X-Message-Number: 8 Robert Covington wrote: > << ago.>>>> Yeah about 12 months ago they did a full spread article on my airplane also but I am under the impression it was shelved. The lever could be used to control a trim tab also. I am now building a model called SPRINT designed by william spring in Canada. It is an all metal craft, with a Soob direct drive installed in the prototype, providing around 55 hp. i guess. I have been a soob explorer all these while mainly due to lack of resources in US funds. I have subscribed to the VW list for some time now and the favourable opinions and reviews have started to sink in now. I need some pointers from you before I dig deeper into this VW. I understand you have a catalogue. Can I buy them and pay for it using my Master Card?. I need about 80 hp. with less than 180 lbs. I need to design and build a mount, is this going to be a big problem. The thrust line requirement of the SPRINT limits the distance of the prop hub. For a start How much will it cost me for 80 hp. VW kit without the accessories e.g alternator & radiator. I can have the kit assembled here in malaysia. Your web page kindled interest in the VW. Thank you.
