Almost all life insurance wont pay off anytime you are a passenger or pilot in a certified or non certified airplane that is not used in commercial carrier operations. You guys who rent spam cans, fly with a friend or are taking lessons and havent specifically bought life insurance while in a plane, I will almost guarantee arent covered. renters insurance doesnt cover it. Almost all policies (like the ones you have through work) have an aviation exclusion clause. Leaving your families sad and broke. (well.. maybe just broke) I have info on life insurance if you are interested. AOPA and EAA life insurance are not the best deals. The easiest substitute is one of the fir subtypes. They can be directly substituted. The overall strength will be slightly higher and the overall weight will also be slightly higher. Get a reference book that covers the selection and grading of wood. EAA has one that is supposed to be very good. Just realize that you will spend a lot of time picking through the lumberyard to find the correct pieces. My EAA chapter is building a primary glider. They are using fir that came from the local lumberyard, two pieces out of over 100. -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Plywood finish From: Donald Reid Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 08:54:28 -0500 X-Message-Number: 5 Steven Welebny wrote: > What provides the > understructure for the plywood in the wings? A number of planes have been designed with bare foam ribs with wing skins of either plywood or aluminum. In this case, the ribs are generally the high density type (like Last-A-Foam) and they are fairly close together, on the order of 3 - 6 inches. -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Progress on Christmas/new year break+epoxy question From: Donald Reid Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 08:55:26 -0500 X-Message-Number: 6 HAshraf@aol.com wrote: > > Question: Is it OK to heat the work area and pieces to be glued to around 60 > deg F and later let the epoxy (T-88) cure at around 40deg for 20 hrs before > handling the joint. I have "met guys" who have flown out of a certain field and made slanderous comments which were far from true and definitely not substantiated, but that doesn't give them merit to be repeated. I have had many meetings and conversations with both Reg and Bud Clarke (a.k.a. the italian coffee guys) and after doing my homework I did buy one of their engines. It is clean and simple! It has an Ellison and a turbocharger and NO injection system. So far my personal experience is only test stand running but all indications are that the engine is all that it is claimed to be, including the weight. I am totally happy with what I received and the quality is far better than I have personally seen come out of some of the big shops rebuilding certified engines. I would have expected a more responsible posting in this issue, especially from someone who who is respected as knowledgeable regarding KR's and aircraft in general. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: spinal crush From: boggyd@webtv.net (D Bogdan) Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 08:24:41 -0600 (CST) X-Message-Number: 8 Is there a way to attach a shoulder harness in the kr so the attachment point is either level or above the occupant's shoulder? RR recently released an "official" shoulder belt mounting system which (if I remember correctly) fastens to a beefed up seat back brace, which would be a little higher than shoulder level. I don't know that I could find the copy that I have, but I'll bet she'd mail you a copy if you asked. If somebody will send me one or scan one for me, I'll put it on my web site. This setup was designed by Bob Marcy, RR's part time analytical engineer. There things that i like about both. The most important thing that made me switch was the fuselage width of the Sonerai ( 24" ). Thats all you have to put your legs and the hips of the front seat passenger. My kids got too big and wife wouldn't fit without pinning my legs against the sides to where i couldn't operate the rudder pedals. The one RR sells will fit a std. o-200 with pull starter and generator but it will move the engine 2" further forward. The old HAPI mount will keep the engine where it was designed but you will have to use a key starter or one of the new aftermarket small ones. the alternator will fit but the generator will not. You can use a 3/8" spacer between the engine and mount to use the pull starter but then you have to add 3/8" to the cowl. hope this helps. The good hearted joking I do concerning SOOBS is because I personally know several people on this list who will live a long time with one on the front of their birds, i.e., Tom, Warren, and several others. I appreciate your comments concerning your favorable views on the engine as I appreciate Mike's comments concerning his observations. Remember one's views and one's observations are two different things. I did my homework on my VW and feel comfortable in it's operation does that make my engine any better than anyone else's...........hell no, it's just my decision. It seems like this time of year, every year, tempers flair. Let's see if I can remember some etiquette issues. 1. If you disagree with someone's observations or opinions then reply with why........no personal attacks. Sorry Bob but I'll use your response as an example..............nothing personal here (I'm kinda ducking already). Just tell us why you disagree with Mike's observations. 300 plus people don't want to hear your squabble. If you still want to squabble, do it off the KRnet. 2. If you agree, a "me too" doesn't go very far unless you tell us why to agree. 3. Us old guys, remember some to these questions have been asked several years ago by us. We've seen them a hundred times but that is the most important questions that new builder had at that time. Help him out. I'm sure the EagleGator will don his uniform and night stick to beat some sense into us. My data and that that I got from this site is that the CG is aprox. 3" forward and 3" aft of the spar, so tanks aft of thr spar would cause a great imbalance in the CG especially if you do not use the hrader tank. My experience has shown that ALL KRs need all the weight you can get in front of the spar. The 9.5 or more galons of fuel will help the KR tail heavy condition. This is my opinion and I am sure that the others have more experience than I, in fact I was told that the easiest fix would be to put spacers behind the mount and move the engine forward. I haven't checked in for quite a while, but I've got two new toys to tell y'all about (it's a Texas thing...) First, remember all of those discussions about the Japanese Pull Saws? I found something similar, maybe better. Wandering around the local hardware store (one of my favorite activities) I found a Stanley saw that uses regular hacksaw blades or several other kinds of blades. You put the hacksaw blade in "backwards" so it cuts on the pull stroke. I tried it the other way, but the blade isn't stiff enough. I still had to try, ya know? Second, I've got a killer way to cut out the ribs. We made an aluminum template, but wood is fine if you're careful. I used a flush-cut router bit with a bearing on the end and roughed out the ribs on a band saw then trimmed them down with the router, two at at time clamped to the template. If I get off my duff I'll put some pix on my web page and let you guys know about it. We're building two airplanes together, so we were almost mass-producing ribs last weekend. It's more fun when you're doing two at a time, but we're going to spend the next year or two arguing the benefits of fixed vs. retract since we have one of each... I live in Parry Sound, Ont. Half way to the north pole and almost due north of Fun and Sun. (45.15N 79.50W). I have a deg. in Mech. Eng. But have not practiced since graduation. I retired as a personnel administrator in 93 and started building a KR2-S summer of 96. So far the boat is built as are the hor. Stab, elev and the spars. The centre section spars are in and the centre section pretty much complete. This is a plans built because economy is one of my big criteria. I even bought the lumber rough sawn and milled and graded it at a friends. Along the way I've accumulated about half my instruments, a heater , a Subaru engine, and a R drive. The Subaru was an !800cc turbocharged but the turbo had been smoked. I've had it completely rebuilt and am I glad I did. The bearings were scored, there was a crack in the head at one of the exhaust valves and the oil pump had to be replaced. The guy I bought it from for $200 Can. Said it was running when he took it out of the car. It appears that he smoked the turbo when he ran out of oil and did a lot of secondary damage he wasn't aware of. I replaced the cupped turbo pistons with regular ones and had the crankshaft reground. The original was MPFI which will be great if I can make it work without the turbo. I have the computer and the shop manual for the engine It cost almost as much as the engine.) If anyone can help here I'm all ears. I have all the parts for the Dave Johnson R drive . Most of the machining is done but there is still some work to be done cutting the plates to shape and assembling the drive. This was made from the plans back when dave was selling them. He quit selling them because people were making multiple drives from one set of plans. If it works I will owe Dave some cash because I'm cheap but I don't believe in ripping people off. So far I've got about 2k into the Engine and R drive but I won't run behind a doubtful engine. Working on the wing flap mechanism. How is the torque rod supported? How do you get the torque rod through the bracket with bends in each end? It would be difficult to bend them in place. I decided to make the actuating arms from 1" sq. al. tube and bolt them on the ends of the torque rod. I don't have picture capability, but I just drill a 3/4" hole in the square tube then taper the sq. tube by angle cutting it. This way you get two 3" arms from about 4" of tube. For bearings I used 3/4" nylon bushings set in each side of the fuselage. Where do I get the nylon bushings? The plumbing section of your local hardware store sells nylon fittings for plastic tubing. Simply cut off what you don't need. You can even get a nice flange on one or both ends depending on where you cut. They can be had in 1/4 in increments up to about 2". The T fittings yield 3 bushings and are the most cost effective. They also make nice cable guides. I have a neat and simple way to set the wing incidence. More on that later. Boy it's a good thing I have a C150 to fly while I'm building the KR2S! It bothers me a bit that you're supposed to fasten the belt material to the shelf with bolts and an aluminum plate, because the belt is narrow enough that the hole-spacing of the bolts has to be too close on the aluminum plate. I was wondering if the solution would be to use a much wider plate and attach the webbing around it by sewing. Unfortunately the seatbelt design, like a rollbar design, is something you hope you will not be designing by trial and error, so I don't see how you'll ever know if it really would work. The important thing is to put your tanks as near the CG as possible to minimize CG shift in flight. Wing tanks located slightly aft of the spar are far better than a header tank located 18" in front of the spar. As fuel burns off from a wing tank, the CG moves forward, so at landing time your plane is more stable than during takeoff. I don't know about you, but I find takeoffs a piece of cake, and landings a bit tricky. I think I could stand a little stability during the landing phase. As a header tank burns off fuel, the CG moves aft. I hate it when that happens... As long as you balance your engine with the engine location, battery location, or whatever, and get your CG in the proper range, fuel tank location should be primarily a matter of minimizing CG shift during flight, in my opinion. My latest thought was to install an electric fuel pump. You do, however, have an excellent point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Mims SOOB comments From: Mike Mims Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 22:53:18 -0800 X-Message-Number: 48 > > << but I find Mike's comments about the "italian coffee" guys to be totally > irresponsible. I would like to end this with another opinion. You have what I believe (once refined) will prove to be the best all around power package for the KR2S. Its power to weigh ratio is perfect, the RPM at which it develops its HP (especially @ 10k feet!) is perfect and without a doubt some of the fastest KR2Ss will be powered by Direct Drive Turbocharged Subarus (I am not pulling your leg here I honestly believe this). zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims SP290 (Sky Pig 290) ,..Building Cowling now mailto:mikemims@home.com http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ Aliso Viejo Ca ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: spinal crush From: Mike Mims Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 23:02:38 -0800 X-Message-Number: 49 I ran two cables from the aluminum brackets that are bolted to the forward spar of the horizontal stab. These cables run at shoulder level straight back and should prevent spinal crush better than any other mounting system I could think of. What I like about the header tank is simplicity, what I don't like is shifting CG with fuel burn. On the other hand I like wing tanks because they are easily mounted on the CG. Things I don't like about wing tanks is their complexity and I have heard if you get the weight to far out on the wing (keep your tanks in the stub wing if you can) the roll control of the aircraft can get weird. There is a KR2 flyer on our field who has 15 gallons or so in each wing located about mid point on the outer wings and if the fuel level gets uneven by as little as 5 gallons he doesn't like it. All this being said take a guess on what I have? BOTH! I have a 17 gallon header tank and 6 gallons in each stub wing. This is what happens when you cant figure out what you want. :o) By the way, my fuel delivery to the engine is gravity feed from the header tank. The two tanks in the stubs are aux tanks that will refill the header in flight via a facet type fuel pump. Anyone else notice you can only post a max of 5 messages a day on this new server?
