That's fine for most builders, and works well for them. But it's the intrepid few who think "I can do better than this" who go on to create Lancairs, Glasairs, Wanderers, Visions, etc. that eventually change the homebuilt aircraft world for the better. Dr. Dean's fuselage is one of those quantuum leaps. The beauty of his method is that it's dirt cheap, and you do it yourself, rather than buying expensive premolded parts made in Malaysia or somewhere. And with his method, there's still lots of room for personal modification. What he's created is a new technology, not just a construction method. I think most of us have thought about a better way to build the fuselage, the difference is that Dr. Dean DID it! I think if you have the desire and the ability to improve on something, you owe it to yourself and future builders to try it... Another concern I have is the cowling I constructed over the wheel wells - since they are big bumps under the wings, they are going to create downward or negative lift, combating the positive lift generated on top of the wings. Possibly I'll have to have high airspeed to take off, in which case I'll need to grind the fairings off. It will be fun to find out. The basic 172 has evolved over the years from it's original design. The 172 airfoil has changed as new design concepts came along, same thing with the new 16% and 18% wings. Remember that the RAF48 was not designed for the KR, it was just "borrowed" from another homebuilt airplane of the time. Look at the KR videos, a stock RAF48 KR flies with it's nose pointed towards the ground and is absolutely, beyond a doubt, remarkably pitch sensitive. Now with that said, I am the host of this years KR Gathering which is to promote the KR as the most cost effective homebuilt airplane presently on the market. You will get a lot of bang for your buck, but it can be improved. I still believe the KR is the best airplane for the money out there right now. My next post will describe what I am now doing. Dana Overall Richmond, KY mailto:kr2616tj@aol.com http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/7085/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Tail From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 09:55:31 EST X-Message-Number: 8 I am in the process of removing the foam and fiberglass from my horizontal stab and the complete removal of my elevator. Now, keep in mind, that my KR was extremely close to flying but something new has come along that has been in the works for some time. Take a look at Dr. Dean's web page where there is a CAD drawing of the tail he is putting on his airplane. I will be documenting, on my web page, the retro fit of this tail on a stock KR. Little has been said concerning the small area of the horizontal stab but to keep the discussion short, yea right :-), it's not even on the charts. Mark, Mike, Troy and others have pointed out the lack of area and airfoil on the ass end of this plane. This is probably the easiest area to address. I will be installing hot wired blue foam between the existing spars. On each spar I will be gluing a cap to make up the difference in thickness for the REAL airfoil which is on the horizontal stab. The most dramatic effect change will be what the whole tail design accomplishes. There has been stability analysis done on the this design including the stock KR2 and the KR2S. The stick force, on the KR2, will change from about 1.3 lbs/g at aft cg (there's your pitch sensitivity feel) to 4.3 lbs./g. You always hear people say that the KR is heavy in roll but light in pitch. This will address this balance difference. In addition to giving you more "feel", the design of the tail will actually extend the allowable aft CG range of the KR2 back over 2". Folks, we are talking a substantial gain here. Note that I said nothing of where the aft CG actually is. The forward CG stays the same, the aft CG problem is dramatically addressed. The KR2S pilot should see a change from 1.3 to 4.8 lbs./g and an allowable aft CG increase of 2.7"..........even better the KR2. Now remember, careful flight testing will take place but the numbers speak for themselves. It's not rocket science. I'll post some pictures this evening of the removal of the foam. Two hours work on one side. It's going to be a piece of cake. Well, his legacy still lives on and even though he isn't around to develop KR-10's there are people out there like Dr. Dean and the "Airfoil Group" that invest time, money, and other resources to ensure that Ken's dream has continuity even after his death. We, the current builders, the builders who are "alive and well" and able to make an impact on the future of the KR series aircraft should be supporting this type of effort. I have no idea what the heck a laminate is or how to start building a laminate for aircraft application. I took the time to read and inspect Dr. Dean's site, his philosophy, his approach, etc. and it seems like a step in a positive direction. My reaction at first was, "Doh! Now I want to build it THAT way!" My answer: "I'll build my 2nd aircraft THAT way!" ... I am hereby making a proposal: Dr. Dean, when you are successful with your plans and are ready to market your new approach, I propose the aircraft be named the "KR-4/DD" (KR, 4th series, Dr. Dean!) ;-) Oh, another point: If I recall correctly, in the KR information kit there is a picture of Ken Rand getting ready to enter the KR-1 (1972). Isn't there a blurb about an award he won for "Best Application of New Materials"? ... I suppose Dr. Dean et al would be vying for "Best Application of Old Methods on aircraft that previously won 'Best Application of New Materials'"!!! ;-) Best wishes to all, Albert Pecoraro Kentwood, MI 49508 616-281-3828 (H) 616-247-2803 (W) apec97@hotmail.com http://fly.to/hangar-AP <--- Now it's ready! It has been proposed that I call this airplane something different than a KR. After all, it has a new fuselage, new airfoil, new tail, heck, I won't even use a RR canopy. I guess I have to agree - it is clearly not a KR, and as such it needs a new name. Unfortunately, I can think up all kinds of weird ways to build this thing, but I have absolutely no talent when it comes to naming things (it took me 3 weeks to name the dog!) I would love to hear any suggestions that you guys might have. I thought of DC-3 and DC-9, but someone told me they were already used, and I wouldn't want to have anyone getting confused. Actually, I don't want my name in any part of the airplane's name. Please send any suggestions you might have to me personally - we've already used up way to much bandwith on this thing as it is. I would certainly appreciate the help. As to the matter of RR (I have gotten a bunch of emails on this.) Yes, RR knows about this construction technique, and the airplane that is being built. RR does not endorse ANY changes to the KR series, and has not expressed any interest in developing this into a "new KR." That's all I'm going to say on the matter. In regards to Keith's post about "building the airplane according to the plans and leave the airfoil alone." In the world of experimental aviation we all the freedom to build the airplane the way we want to. That is a tremendous thing. Without that ability, there would have never been a KR. Comments like this are dangerous. Not dangerous in the sense that building an unsafe airplane is dangerous, but dangerous in the sense that it stops us from asking the question "is there a better way?" If Ken never asked the question we'd all be building the airplanes that the KR was derived from. And, if nobody asked the questions, or had the stuff to try something different, we would have never gotten past the Wright Flier. I think, that we have the OBLIGATION to ask the question. Trust me, it is much easier to buy the plans and the materials and build something that you know will fly, than to invest the time, effort and money that you think might fly. Failure to try, is always failure to succeed. There's my 2 cents. Good to be back on, I missed you guys. > Just thought I would add my thoughts about my plans (in progress) for a trim indicator. Since I am copying (loosly) the Katana panel, it has an electronic trim indicator that consists of a vertical row of about 10 leds. and is usefull for setting takeoff trim. I have built an indicator from a auto battery voltage monitor kit I bought at the electronics hobby shop in Toronto.I think it cost about $10 and I built it in about 20 min. It was originally designed to monitor 9 to 18 volts, but was easily adjusted using the trimmers to give indications for 0 to 12 volts full scale. I plan to use a voltage regulator of 9 or 12 volts and a precision potentiometer to give trim indication. Panel space used can be as little as 1 1/4" tall by 1\4" wide. Not much panel space for a cool indicator. The kit comes with round LEDs but I will ribbon cable it to a 16 pin socket and a rectangle led I.C. array that has red, yellow and green LEDs so I can set it at a glance. I'll try and take a picture of it and include it with this post. If anyone is keen to have one of these kits for their plane let me know, I'm sure we could help. The first pic is the board and the second shows the 12v. regulator and a slide pot that has about >1 1/2" of travel linearly but you could use a rotary pot if you like. > >Regards Dennis (in Toronto) --=====================_917327947==_ Content-Type: image/jpeg; name="batmon1.jpg"; I would suspect that the crash was in a Chartered Plan. And as a politician Senator Bumpers Embellished his story for affect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: KR Kit for sale From: "Michael C. Taglieri" Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 00:29:11 EST X-Message-Number: 18 Actually, the name of the place is STATEN Island, not "Stanton." It's one of the five boroughs of New York City. You should probably also mention that Betty told me the price was $7500, FIRM. If she has backed off that price, she didn't tell me, and I already said I was interested if the price were lower. Mike Taglieri >As part of the continuing saga, here is the project list that is >located in >NYC.
