I actually just finished making mine for a whopping cost of $32.00 (free labor) BUT before the rest of you guys think you can save a few bucks by doing it yourself, I have access to a complete machine shop and without some good industrial tools (Bridgeport, metal cutting saws, heat treating, etc) I wouldnt have attempted it. 4130HT is tough stuff to deal with. You'll burn up a few drill bits if you dont do it properly (drill speed rpm = (CSx4)/D ) and you'll probably heat the stock to the point where it isnt the same stuff you bought. Actually this is more of a question then an advertisement. Trailing Edge Technologies, LLC has potentially come up with a new product - I am curious to see what kind of interest there is out there. If you are considering using a AS5048 root - AS5045 tip wing (which is the best way to go if you are considering the new wing, and haven't yet built the spars) you will be interested to know that the AS5048 wing root gives you a taller spar - this is, of course, stronger and gives you more room in the wing roots for things like fuel tanks (We been over this, I know.) But, the one potential drawback of the taller spar, is that the Dan Diehl Landing gear brackets don't fit very well. What happens is that the spar caps are further apart, and while the bolts can technically pass through the caps, they aren't optimally placed at all. We have come up with a welded 4130 Gear leg mount that is optimized for the AS5048 wing root. Yes, this would work for the Dan Diehl gear legs. The price would be in the $275 - 285 range (still pending). I am just curious how many people would be interested in a product like this. If there is sufficient interest, we will offer it, but if not - forget I ever mentioned it. By the way, I have a pair of Dan Diehl gear mounts for sale - best offer. If interested, email me personally. Visit http://www.msn.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Plug for Online Manual From: Kimball Anderson Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 20:13:34 -0400 X-Message-Number: 6 Well, since it's Friday, and since nobody else has anything to say, I'm going to put in a plug for our Online Manual/FAQ project. The online manual project (a/k/a project_viking) has been in existence a little less than a month now, and in that short period of time we've managed to make a fair amount of progress. We have several excellent articles up already, and many more that people have signed up. We like to think that, for the short period of time we've been working, we've done a pretty darn good job. The process of getting the web site completed won't happen overnight. Many of the builders that have signed on to do articles are actually in the process of building the section of their project that they are writing their article on, and documenting the process along the way. This will take some time, but the end result should be a centralized collection of builder-compiled successes, failures and procedures that will enable others see what works and what doesn't, and thus learn from the experiences of those who have already been there and done that. We're not trying to replace the official Rand-Robinson builders manual, just trying to make things easier to understand and shine some light into the dark corners. Of course, as long as I'm on the soapbox, I have to make a pitch for articles. Playing the salesman is not something that comes naturally to me (I'd rather shovel garbage, in fact -- which is kind of the same thing, IMHO) but I happen to think that this project is a worthwhile endeavor. There are several sections that are still in need of volunteers/authors. While you're visiting the site, take a look at those topics that don't have a name out next to them. If you happen to be working on that section of your project, consider the fact that documenting your progress along the way could be an invaluable source of help or inspiration or what have you for the next guy. If your project is stalled, consider this an opportunity to get started again. Documenting your work won't get in the way of completing your project. In most cases, it'll probably make things better. And you guys out there that have already completed your projects and have documentation (pictures, etc.) just laying around, consider posting it to the site for the benefit of all. That's what KRNet is all about. You don't have to be a professional or even an average writer to contribute. We have great people with writing experience helping out. If you've got something to share, we'll help you get it out there. Okay, I've blown enough wind. Good luck to everyone out there on their KR's. Kimball Anderson isleno@hargray.com Oh, yeah . . .
