Gimme a couple of years and I'll know something about props. After first flights (with somebody's borrowed prop) I plan to make my own three bladed wooden prop. There's a web page that shows a Cozy guy building his, using some software that generates CAD plots of the prop cross-sections at appropriate stations along the prop (but the link escapes me at the moment). He also has a spread sheet at http://cozy.canard.com/docs/ for determining stresses in the prop. A quick hotbot search for "propeller design" turned up 310 hits, the most promising of which is probably http://www.innercite.com/~bateseng/ , but you may not want to spend $130 bucks for it. I'll bet NASA or somebody has one out there somewhere for free. There are also books on the subject available from Wicks and AS&S that might answer your questions, but I'll bet the best guide is to use what others with similar engines are airplanes are getting good results with. The fine tuning will be trial and error and tweaking, which is why I'll build my own. And to answer the next question, I'm using a three blade to transfer more power to the air, since I'm limited in diameter by my gear legs... I have a GPS from Trimble that was purchased in 92. I went to their web site, listed in the magazine, and found it to be non compliant. I think you should be able to find your GPS on the Web as well. Well, like I said that was the good/bad news depending on how you look at it. I've been wanting a new one anyway to keep up with the "big boys". Since I also sail in the Gulf, I have been thinking about the Lowrance unit that you can download the ocean charts into the GPS when you want to sail and then the aviation charts when you fly. Since I don't respond much, most of the time the answers are already there, I'll bring you up to date on my plane. I am in the process of moving it from Sullivan, MO to North St. Charles, MO at Smart Field. This will be about 35 min closer to my home and will put me in the air more. In addition, I have a bet going with my wife on weight loss. If she wins we go to Vegas for 4 days and 3 nights - I hate Vegas, if I win she goes on a week trip in my KR - she doesn't like to fly. We are both motivated. I'll let you know how the flying is. -- Jim Faughn N8931JF St. Louis, MO (314) 652-7659 or Cell (314) 346-4038 You wrote: ------------- Yes, I did see the article. I plan on making my first prop using D-fir since I can get it here for a reasonable price. Birch is also good I'm told. The prop carving forum at sun & fun was using birch, I think. While striping down the inboard wing sections I noticed that the main centre spar was splitting down the centre on both sides at the end of the spars. The ends where covered by the airfoil templates and this was only notice once these had been removed. When I built my KR2 I acquired an old set of wings to use the spars and WAF's for my project. The spars where also splitting down the centre, the split was aprox 5" long so I had to laminate in a new section. This seems to be a common problem with any type of wood so sealing at the ends of the spars is quite important. I have since glassed on a section of cloth at the end to bond the wood together. The KR1 was sealed with a coat of epoxy but this does not seem to work to well. I also noticed on stripping that all the aircraft nuts and bolts are rusted and will have to be replaced. All the WAF fitting are also rusted but more on the section that fits against the wood (these where anodised and part of the kit purchased from R.R.). I would recommend that the WAF fittings be powdercoated rather that anodised as it seems that anodising does eventually rust...maybe a good coat of paint will also do the job! All the bolts removed from the WAF fittings where so badly rusted on the inside that they cannot be re-used. I will coat all the insides of these holes for the hinges and all other fitting with varnish to seal off the wood from the bolts. Hopefully this will add more life to the bolts. I hope the above has been of some benefit to some of you guy's and is not all old news. Enjoy Regards Carlton Blandford South Africa PS. I'll post more as I strip. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Fuel Problem....HELP!!! I have a brilliant photo of a KR2 that was built in 1984 and in my mind is the best looking KR I've ever seen. I've also got a couple of drawings of my planetary reduction that I built for my plane and other interesting mods...should be finished before the end of the year so hang in their!!. Unfortunately I don't have permanent access to the web. I would love to show you guy's a picture of my KR2 on the KRnet but wouldn't like to be shot down by the net mom's for using excess bandwidth. Is there any KR database around on the net that we can access and check all the current flying KR's in the world? You MAY, repeat MAY, be able to leave the unit on during the end of week rollover and be ok. That way it will have the data it needs to know what day it is. Another option may be a software upgrade. Of course if Trimble says the unit is worthless on 22 Aug 99 then I would believe them. Of course I wouls still try leaving the unit on during the 21-22 Aug transition....that is Universal time which is CDT+5 hours or EDT +4 hours.
