Yesterday I stumbled across a new source for the SmartLevel. In the newest Wicks catalog it's listed for $88 for the module, and $19 for the 48" "rail". Not a bad price. As for water levels, I've always used a simple piece of 1/4" tubing filled with water and red food coloring. Speaking of neat gadgets with the "gravity chip", I'm about to order a g-meter for automotive use. It uses the same technology and costs $140. It won't work with airplanes, since it just measures lateral g's and acceleration. Details are at www.gtechpro.com . I'm going to do a little performance work on my wife's new Audi A4 Quattro wagon (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/a4 ) , and I've always wanted some concrete numbers on the killer Karmann Ghia, which does 0-60 times in the low fives... I talked to someone the other day that hasn't gotten his yet either. Wynn called me about a week or so ago and said that he would send it, but so far nothing. He told me that he has had a death in the family and that he was having a real problem with depression, but that he would get it in the mail in the next couple of weeks. So far nothing. I really don't have too have the conversion manual to build one anyway, so it is not critical to me. What I need is a good mothed of mounting the engine to the firewall when a prop is being driven from the flywheel end of it, I was told that Wynn's bed mount was a good one. I've all ready built several of them for my toys, know how to put a good one together. I built one for a 3 wheeler that had 2 3 BBL carbs from a Porsch on it and the big cylinders from a WV on it. It was really awesome!!! Would scare you, a lot. Try imagining a vehicle that had around 200 HP and weighed less than1200 lbs. Enough of old stuff, as soon as I get them I'll let you know. The machine dose appear to be very well built and the price is reasonable. Some one who wants a mill of their own wont find much in that price range in a used Bridgeport or any of the other popular machinery makes. The only draw back I could see is the XYZ travel is quite limited but more than enough for any of the KR parts. The market this machine would really appeal to would be the model train, cannon and steam engine hobbyists. The standard these people work to is fascinating and the examples that I have seen in this field are incredible. The KR projects we are involved in would not justify the purchase of any precision machining equipment in my opinion unless there was some marketing of parts consideration as a sideline and there are people already in that field who do a very nice job. Thanks.(my first time on the net) >Terry Adair- email "adair@net2000.com.au" > Terry, Other than a slightly larger oil sump, my C-85 is the same size as the C-90. The mounts: There are two engine mounts available that fit the A-series, C-series and O-200 Continental engines. Great Plains (Steve Bennett) sells an engine mount for the HAPI VW engine that will fit the Continental mounting pads. Last I knew it was $210 plus shipping. RR sells a mount designated as KR-2S/O-200 engine mount. It cost a little over $400. I bought both. The HAPI engine mount didn't fit over my antique Eiseman mags and was too short to use either the starter or generator unless you add at least an inch or two of spacers. This mount is also only 16 inches wide where it bolts to the firewall if I remember correctly. The RR KR-2S/O-200 engine mount will fit any of the A/C series Continental and fits eitiher the KR-2 or KR-2S firewall. It is about 4 inches longer and bolts to the firewall out near the longerons. It leaves sufficient room behind the engine to change the starter, or generator and do maintenance on the magnetos. The down side to this mount is that the lower cross brace fits very close to the generator and will rub or possibly be too tight if you have an alternator. FWIW, I sold the HAPI mount and have been flying behind the RR mount for the last two years. The Cowling: I don't know if RR sells a cowling big enough to fit over the C-90 or not. I bought a cowling from Dan Diehl that was pulled from a mold of Marty Roberts O-200 powered KR. Since Marty has the shorter mount, I had to modify the cowl to make it a few inches longer. It is also a very tight fit around the upper plugs. I finally added a couple of blisters to the cowl to make room for the plugs and plug leads. From: "Eugene Lukan" Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 22:55:47 -0600 X-Message-Number: 24 Mark, I'm new to kr-net and am planning on building a KR derivative, hopfully I'll get underway this winter. After several weeks of searching I located a source for the document you are asking about. It is known as ANC-18 Bulletin, Design of WoodAircraft Structures, and was published in June 1951 (second edition). For 63.00 $US plus a handling fee a reproduction copy can be obtained from US Dept Of Commerce Technology Administration National Technical Information Service 5285 Port Royal Rood Springfield, VA 22161 I ordered mine by calling their Customer Service Dept (703) 605-6050. Their toll free no. is 1-888- 584-8332 (does not accept Canadian calls). After been put on hold numerous time I got immediate service by call late on a Friday afternoon. Its a verv good technical doc, ( for those asking about drainage and ventilation holes I quote "Wood structures must be adequately drained to insure a normal length of service life . This applies to box spar sections as well as all low portions of wings and fuselages. - - - - - Service experience indicates that dranage holes for individual compartments should not be less than one-quarter inch in diameter------"). Hope this helps, Gene Lukan, Cochrane AB, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Langford To: KR-net users group Sent: Thursday, May 27, 1999 11:23 AM Subject: [kr-net] ANC-17? > NetHeads, > > Does anyone know of a source for ANC-17, "Design of Wooden Aircraft > Structures"?
