This was not supposed to be a KRNet post. I guess the "Mark Langford" selection and the "KRNet" selection are too close together in my address list. Well, there are a couple of points on WAFs that I should make since I have everybody wondering what the heck this was all about. If you are building a KR-2S, the Wing Attach fittings that are called out in the plans aren't for you - those are for the KR-2. My set of "S" supplement drawings never said anything about the different fittings. The angle of the aft wing spar is more severe then the standard KR-2 and this needs to be reflected in the fittings. The "S" needs 8 of the #2 fittings and 8 of the #3 fittings (no #4 fittings are used.) The differences in these fittings is very slight, but they are needed to get the bolt holes to align with one another. I know it's not Friday, but it's close. Trailing Edge Has WAFs for the 2S ready to be shipped (by somebody other then the post office) These fittings are laser cut (not stamped) and are then powder painted. The powder painting process is kind of neat in that they electrostatically apply the paint and then bake it. This permanently bonds the paint to the metal and prevents corrosion much more effectively then the CAD plating - it's pretty tough to scratch the paint off of these fittings. We had these fittings painted with a textured black. The texture is nice, so that when you clamp them into position, they resist sliding around while you mark the holes (it also looks COOL.) I also want to mention that TET may be getting out of the WAF business (as I eluded to in my previous, erroneous, post.) The reason is pretty simple. This is a HUGE hassle, with very little return. The reason that we got into this, was because I found that I could have a set of fittings made for my airplane that are much higher quality, with a lower price, and we thought we would pass that along to anybody else that wanted some. When we set the price, there is very little profit built in. We always intended for this to be a "service" more then anything else. Any profit that is generated gets rolled back into R&D. The nightmare of trying to get parts made (to our quality specs) painted, boxed, and shipped, while still working a regular day job, and building an airplane on the side is not what I consider "fun" and after all, this is supposed to be fun, right? So, if you want a set of KR-2S fittings - you better let us know soon, because when they are gone, they're gone. If there is a HUGE interest out there, we may have another bunch made - but I doubt it. Since I'm not too interested in the "cool factor" (I think the fixed gear with wheel pants that I've seen are "cool" indeed!), I may go for a fixed gear taildragger, (that I do consider "cool"). But what about the top speed and also range? All I have is the RR literature right now and range seems to vary quite a bit. KR-2S vs KR-2 fuel tank capacity is a large factor, but operating efficiency? Like to hear more you on this. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Dumb question of the week. I prefer trigear but went with the Diehl convential gear to save weight and money. On range cnsider the size of the cockpit and your kidneys. Even with just 12 gal on board I would probably run out of both before I ran out of gas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Re: Re: retract gear on the KR-2S From: "Mark Langford" Date: Sat, 5 Jun 1999 15:35:28 -0500 X-Message-Number: 11 When folks started mounting Diehl gear and dumping the stock retracts, they saved a little weight and picked up speed! I think the only way you'll get any faster with retracts is if you tuck them completely up into the wing like Don Betcham did with his motorcycle strut affair. And if your gear is always down, you'll never belly it in. I know folks who've done gear-up landings 3 different times. That starts cutting into your flying time and budget after a while... Hmmm. I wonder if that's the same Jerry Aguilar that I dealt with two or three years ago when I was looking for a copy of Steve Wittman's VW prop drive plans for his Formula One racer. I called Ben Owen at EAA for help locating a set, and was told that Wittman's plans for the drive and the Tailwind had been given to AS&S for sale to the public. I called AS&S and was given Jerry, who was apparently in charge of getting them to market. He promised me a set in a few weeks, after they'd had time to "clean them up" and put them on CAD. I told him I'd gladly take them like they were, and pay whatever he thought they'd be worth. He said he'd get right back to me. Several weeks later I called and left another message, and several more over the next few months. I finally got to talk to him, and he promised he'd get them out to me the next day. Several more calls, and several more messages got me absolutely nothing. I finally went to rec.aviation.homebuilt and asked if anybody had obtained a copy of them BEFORE they had been taken captive by AS&S, and would they mind sending me a set. A few hours later, a fellow homebuilder faxed them to me, for free. So my question is, since when does HE care who AS&S ignores and gives poor service to? For dissatisfied customers, he probably needs only look as far as his Rolodex. Don't get me started on all of the BAD experiences I've had with AS&S, from stuff backordered for months, to mis-shipments and mischarges. On the other hand I've ordered a hundred times more stuff from Wicks, and never had but one little problem, which was Next Day Aired to me the next day! I only order what I absolutely have to from AS&S... The wings ride with the leading edges down, cradled in cloth slings. There's nothing rigid to bounce the foam/fiberglass on, and it conforms perfectly to the airfoil shape, and shouldn't hurt the paint. Heck, you could just get some bedsheets and do continuous sling supports for almost the full length of each wing. If you've seen a glass company truck, you have an idea of how to lean the wings inward with the fuselage in the middle of the 'A'. Just remember to watch your pitot and fuel vent, etc., when loading the wings into the slings.
