Re: Lost HD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Elevator trim tab From: "John Martindale" Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 2:47:28 X-Message-Number: 1 Hi Folks I've heard that the standard 4" x 10" tab on the KR2 is inadequate. Does anyone have info on a more suitable dimension? Measurements from a Cessna-152 give a 15% area of the elevator....about double the standard RR design. What are the limits of travel in degrees and how are they set? Could the limits of a MAC S4A servo suffice for this? Is piano hinge better than the RR tube design? The latter is difficult to lubricate, inspect, replace or set end play. Also I can't find suitable diameters that aren't sloppy. Your message received thanks Mark. Regards See Ya John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: New Baby (LONG). From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 06:56:31 EDT X-Message-Number: 2 Got your attention with that subject line didn't I??? Well, we no longer have the insurance money from the damage the DUI driver did to the 172, the green backs now reside in Dallas, TX. My partner and I were looking for another airplane even before the incident, that had more cross country capabilities and that was fully, not partially, IFR. I'll kind of drop some hints here. Flew commercial twice to Dallas, once to look it over and this past Tuesday to buy it and fly it back. The airplane was located on the east side of Dallas/Fort Worth class B airspace. Loaded up 60 gallons on board and picked up clearance through DFW to a "small" grass strip 80 across to Wally Steen's house on the west side. Wally is Doug Steen's (KRnet guy) father. He lives on a flying community (5 hangars) with a 2600' grass strip. The "grass strip" connotation does not do this runway justice. It's some type of Bermuda grass that would put golf courses to shame, it's also smooth as glass. A couple of big boomers came up so we decided to put the airplane in Wally's hangar along with his two Luscombes (sp) and Doug's Bonanza. That's right there was room for my airplane along with three other airplanes, a vehicle, a trailer and tractor. His neighbor saw us moving some things around and came over and offered his hangar for use. He reached in his pocket, pulled out a remote and shot it across the runway and the bifold doors of a hangar the same size opened up for the new baby. Wally and his wife put us up for the night, great hospitality. Here's the good stuff. Guess the plane............. Ease in the power with 225hp to keep the P factor under control, little back pressure on the yoke at 60 to lighten the nose wheel, gear off at about 80, forward runway no longer in play gear up, after one minute screw the prop out ease those RPMs back to 2300 with 26" of manifold pressure. Climb up to 9500, contact DFW approach and get clearance across the airspace. Cleared direct at 9500, on course. Class B airspace is some big as#$W airspace. Set on course, out at between 165 and 170 mph GPS across the ground. Land at Hot Springs, Arkansas for a relief break, top the tanks off and off to KY. Cruise at 7500 VFR on top over scattered. Land at Lake Barkley State Resort Park, more relief, no fuel, filed to get above the weather and took 11,000 on top. At one point with a tailwind, we were showing 2300 RPMs, 165Kts (189.75MPH) across the ground and still out of the yellow arc. Punch through into Richmond, KY. Gear down at about 115, flaps coming in at 105, MP pressure back to 15", 2300 on the RPMs, prop in, trim to 90, hold to having the runway, back on the trottle, looking for 85, ground effect and touchdown. The baby is home. Total time from west of Dallas to Richmond, KY about 830+ miles, two stops only one being fuel, 5.6 hours TT on tach. Can you guess yet? Pictures at http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/7085/kr00007.htm There's only five total pictures on this page but a couple of them are pretty good size files so you may have to wait a minute for the images to fully load. Oh, this needs to be a KR post..................the last picture on that page is a picture of the ramp area and grass area off the side of the ramp of Lake Barkley State Resort Park runway. I counted about 25 tiedowns, with ropes on the blacktop. The grassy area is huge. We won't have any problems with space. Note, for those of you flying KRs in, the airport is somewhat elevated over the surrounding terrain. Use the airport elevation for your base and final, not the terrain under you. Your tendency will be to come in on a flat and low final. Keep it a little higher than you might think, you have plenty of runway in front of you. From: Laheze@aol.com Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 09:40:02 EDT X-Message-Number: 4 Dana, Congratulations on the purchase of your Bonanza 1948 or 1949 I believe. I flew your new plane from Dallas AirPark East to LakeLand Florida last spring and yes it is a fast airplane, I did have some good tail winds. It took 3 hours 15 minutes from here to Mariana Florida and 1 hour 10 minutes from there to Lakeland. My Bonanza was down at the time and Gene insisted that I take his, he is a great guy and you didn't go wrong in buying that plane it is a lot better than that ole Cessna you had. Please try and keep this one away from the drunk drivers ! Larry Howell Rockwall Texas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Polystyrene foam From: "Oscar Zuniga" Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 07:15:51 PDT X-Message-Number: 5 I think we've been over the foam thing before, but for the record I am building my M-19 "KR Construction Trainer" using 3/4" thick, pink, Owens-Corning "Foamular 500" extruded polystyrene unfaced sheet foam. Comes in 4'x8' sheets, costs less than $8 per sheet, and is completely compatible with Aeropoxy and T-88, is easily sandable and workable. It is also completely INcompatible with 3M Contact Cement, Exxon, Texaco, Shell, Diamond Shamrock, or any other kind of gasoline known to man. For that reason I will be using urethane foam and vinylester resin for building my (wet wing) fuel tanks and anything else near them. Since it's Friday, I'll also mention a non-KR item- I have just updated my M-19 construction webpage with latest photos, at http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Dropzone/5610/update.html Oscar Zuniga Medford, Oregon mailto: taildrags@hotmail.com website at http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Dropzone/5610/index.html _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. My VW engine with single mag has aircraft type plugs. My standard deep-socket Sears plug wrench of course won't fit these plugs because it isn't deep enough. So I go to order a plug wrench from the usual suspects and find that they are about $18.00!! Am I missing something here? Is there a cheaper aircraft plug wrench out there? I don't need the open-end type for slipping over the cable and reaching down into cowlings, because the jugs on my VW hang out in the breeze and are easy to get to.
