Lemelin ,Sherbrooke, Qc" Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 13:22:36 -0400 X-Message-Number: 2 Hi Krneters, This weekend we did some weight & balance calculations and computed the lenght of the needed engine mount to 7". Then we tried to find the location of thrust line on the plans and constrution manual without success. From our set of plans we can only figure out this vector from the mesure stated for the RR engine support (square firewall attachement brackets). We've had access to a Diehl mount from which we crunched a hole new set of numbers. We also have another mesure from an old news letter(Ernest Kope) which also doesn't match... To top it all, we have to fit it to a magnum Hapi with accessorie case which has the starter on top. So, if you gentlemen(or ladies?) were kind enough to direct us to the correct location of this elusive info we'd be much obliged... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: thrust line location From: Mike Mims Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 10:29:48 -0700 X-Message-Number: 3 "Y. The best I could figure was somewhere close to the bottom of the top shelf. From what I gather you more or less mount your engine so it fits in the cowling (from RR). If you are building your own cowling then you get to figure it out. Also on your weight and balance, I think you will find that no-one makes a mount that will place the engine far enough forward. That's why you see all these KRs with anywhere from 1 inch to 3 inch spacers mounted between the engine and the mount. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Building New Gear Legs http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Progress and weights From: cartera Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 12:07:22 -0600 X-Message-Number: 4 Mike Mims wrote: > > cartera wrote: > > > > > Hi Mike, > > Wheww! that's a lot of lead. From all the drawings and photos I had reviewed it seemed best to use the top longeron as the thrust line. Sure enough, when I got my engine cowiling from RR the fit was perfect. Skip's photos can now be seen on the FAQ at: http://www.evansville.net/~boeing/project_viking Click on Chapter 7, then on Skip's article. Also new on the FAQ are two articles on flying the KR: "First Flight in a KR" by Adrian Carter "The Perfect Landing" by Jim Faughn These articles are located in Chapter 11, now renamed "Flying the KR." Good information from real KR builders and flyers. Can't beat advice like that! By the way, There are a couple of features on the FAQ that are not immediately obvious. First, if you click on the KRnet logo, it will take you to the KRnet home page. Second, all the articles have little green or red icons next to them. Green indicates the article is finished. Red indicates an article that is in progress or has been promised. Also, somebody out there once indicated that they might write an article on the pushrod control system. If you're still willing, send me a note. (I lost your address.) We had a request from a builder for just such an article recently. And, as always -- we can use some new articles :-) Happy building, Kimball Anderson isleno@hargray.com ----- Original Message ----- From: To: KR-net users group Sent: Monday, September 06, 1999 9:40 AM Subject: [kr-net] Side Mounted Stick > Many of you have asked about the side mounted stick in my KR-2. Ellington" Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 22:36:55 -0500 X-Message-Number: 16 Hi again Netters Long message, sorry. I have been off the net since spring because Lyris refused to handle my address at the University. Now that I am back on, I have two things to report. 1. What is going on. 2. I'm so busy I'm stealing sleep time to work on my project. So, I do not have time to go back through the archives to locate the answer to a question. I feel it unwise to set my firewall for a while, until I get the tail feathers done and can get a true moment arm on it, and until I can get the cg and weight of Gpasc rear end forward 2180 engine all dressed out. Please, those who have been there, about how much longeron extension should I allow for on a standard, but optimized KR2S?? On item 1, I have my dual stick group completed, painted and ready to mount. My rudder pedals are completed, painted and ready to mount. Here, I depart from the old method. I have broadened the fuselage 4 inches at the shoulder. Also, I have laid it out and am building it upside down (al a Dean). Further, I am building it with straight sides. Thus, every cross section is a rectangle (just think how much this saves on gussets). I am still playing with sketches on trying to round that bottom longeron outside corner without adding more than a couple of pounds of wood. Another nicety is that the whole top of the fuselage represents a water-line, lengthwise and sidewise for making measurements (spars, etc). Also, I plan to make a second top longeron of pine on the same lines as the real fuselage on the work table so it is a mirror image of the top of the fus. I'll strengthen it so I can flip it over and use it for making canopy, front decks, and turtle back off of the fus. I got the vertical stabilizer forward spar mounted. I should be able to permanently mount the horizontal stabilizer, foam and glass the vert stab and rudder, and get to work rigging the flight controls this week. One thing I did differently from the plans is I added an additional spacer between the bottom of the vert stab spar and the forward bulkhead shear webs. This gave me something solid to clamp the spar to at the bottom to help hold it at the proper angle while the flox cured. This spacer goes in between the shear webs first, then the spar goes in, and then the spacers from the plans go in. A 5/8" block between the top of the shear webs (in place of the horizontal stab forward spar) gave me something to clamp against at the top, and the job was finished. The only tricky part was establishing and then maintaining the proper alignment of the spar with the aft spar and the aircraft centerline. Once that was set, I tightened the clamps and let it cure. Here's a suggestion for anyone in a slump on their project. Varnish something. Things are starting to get tight in the aft end of my airplane, so I decided to varnish the last couple of bays in the fuselage while I can still get at them easily. Long story short, I ended up doing the aft fuselage all the way up to the aft wing spar! I had done one coat quite a while ago, but cleaning everything up for this coat and then seeing how good it looked when I was done with the varnish was a real motivator! Gives it a nice finished look. Just make sure you don't varnish anything you'll need to epoxy or glass over, or you'll probably have to sand down to bare wood again.
