Today I drilled the holes and had my friend Allan weld them together. I built a jig on a 1/2 thick slab of aluminum to hold everything in place and to keep the bracket from warping. Allan said the 4130 welds like a dream! Anyway after all was said and don't the brackets look GREAT with very little warping. Allan arc welded the brackets with a new stainless steel stick that he said has been regarded as being the "hot setup" when welding metals such as 4130. In any case the welds have nice penetration and the flowed out really nice. Tonight I plan clean them up a bit and spray some paint on them. Tomorrow I may be able to bolt them to the main spar as well as installing the fiberglass legs. On another note one of our fellow homebuilders at Chino had a terrible accident in his aircraft. I am happy to report that he was only slightly injured but his airplane is a complete loss. Seems there was power loss while in a medium bank turn and the aircraft may have entered an accelerated stall. Sounds as if it may have rolled on its back and went into an inverted spin. Recovery was made at less than 100 feet AGL and a power off glide to a field was made only to find a 5 foot tall berm right in glide path. The pictures of the plane looked much like the pictures on Wild Bills web site of the KR1. Very scary!! -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Building New Gear Legs http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Are KR-2 wings removable ? (Schlumberger is a French Company). I have just helped convert three of them into being student pilots, and a third who is from Belgium used to fly gliders and was training to be an Air Force pilot, until he learned that in the Belgan Air Force, there is no money to fly the F-16's so they sit in the barracks and play cards and talk about how nice it would be to fly. At any rate, I will check to see if any of them have any ideas, I doubt that they will come up with anything, but who knows. -- Regards Ross Stefan B. wrote: > > Mike and Haris, > > I was off for a day. Miracalously the pilot survived with no injuries. This is what Brad told me: The plane was flying near Chino airport at 1000' agl when the engine quit during a turn. The plane then entered an inverted spin but the pilot was able to turn the plane around just before it impacted the ground. Needless to say the plane was completly destroyed.
