He did a lot of work for the 'Dune Bugy' crowd. Bakersfield is only 2 hours away from the beach (Pismo Dunes) and a lot of people around here really go for that kind of activity. He has some engines and seems to feel that he can get either of the engines, corvairs will take some time. He though about 2 weeks of so. The one thing that he pointed out to me was that you don't want to get anything older than a '65 year model. He said that the older ones just didn't have good enough components (pistons, cylinders etc.). He has a '65 model in storage and has told me he has to go through the lien process, about 2 months and I can buy it form him which I'm going to do. It's still in the car. A person can tell him just how they want the engine built, they can send the parts to him to install or what ever you would like. I know that after looking at the work and the engine that he had on a stand. I felt he seems to know what he's doing. He had a 200 hp corvair on a stand that goes to his dune bugy. Man was it a good looking engine. The way he described the corvairs and their reliability was outstanding. The cruise speed i. e. rpm is around 3000 to 3200 with a red line of 4800. good by prop. The torque range is in the 2700 area (depending on the cam) and for an aircraft engine it should work very well. He calls his shop 'Hudson's Performance Engineering' on Roberts Lane in Bakersfield. His number is, 661-393-6931. No, he doesn't have an 800 number, sorry. I'm going to give him all the information I can from the net that I can get my hands on. Maybe he could add something to the parts and pieces that we have information on now. Also he mentioned a fuel injection. Says that it will add to the reliability and performance. I had a Turbo Viking with a manual waste gate for a boost to maintain and man did that ever work well. You never boosted it above sea level. Just as you would climb you added boost to maintain sea level power. Boy was it ever fast once you got to altitude. He says that would be a very good idea especially if you don't boost it to try and get more power as that would knock down the reliability. I think that's because most are using magnetos. The Two VWs in my hanger use magnetos. One has dual mags the other has one slick mag and one HAPI electronic ignition. The one with a single electronic ignition used to have dual electronic ignition until one day he had a drop in voltage and the engine ran like crap. His comments on dual or single electronic ignitions are pretty harsh now. I almost think you should consider running the 009 distributor from great planes (or any VW parts store, $70 US) with a 90 degree cap. If I had a VW that is sure as heck what I would do if I could not get my hands on a mag. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Building New Gear Legs http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ http://www.evansville.net/~boeing/project_viking/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Calgary - KR Builder day Nov. 13 From: "Rick Hubka" Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 10:18:40 -0600 X-Message-Number: 8 Hi KRNetters - This is my second Post... We now have 7 confirmed attendee's. It's a go! ------------------------------------------- A few of us KR builders up in Western Canada (who can't make it to this years gathering. I'm going next year!) are planning a 1 day KR builders day in Calgary on November 13. Some of us have never met another KR builder. Hell... I've never seen a live (touchy feely) KR past the boat stage. Henning Mortensen (Regina, Saskatchewan henning_work@hotmail.com ) and myself (Rick Hubka Calgary, Alberta rick@hubka.com ) have talked about getting together since our first emails back in March of this year. So we are inviting any KR builder who: - lives in Western Canada - also any builder who might be in the Calgary vicinity traveling at that time. - also any KR builder anywhere who'd travel the distance to meet us for a 10 hour KR day. Place: 65 Butler Crescent NW Calgary, Alberta, Canada H: (403) 284-5126 Time: Saturday November 13th, 1999 10am to 8pm Most of the time will be in my garage ( 32' X 24' heated with a bar fridge) with my KR boat and a dozen chairs! Henning and I have come up with a tentative agenda which is majorly flexible. Agenda 10:00 am - Arrive and do the hi/hello thing - Hot Wire a couple of 1 Ft sample wings ( I just got the $27.00 Hot Wire Kit from A.S.) 1 hour - Apply some filler to a dent in one. Drink beer & chat while filler dries 12:00 BBQ burgers & dogs and more beer. 13:00 - Sand the filler & foam ( may need a blow dryer to dry it) *** Adrian Carter accepted the invitation to do the glassing demo!!! - Apply a layer of fiberglass to one mini wing - 1 hour - Apply a layer of Carbon or Kevlar fiber to the other- 1 hour 15:00 - Open discussion about the new airfoil and check out the WAF's & new airfoil templates from... Opps...Can't say it's not Friday. - Drink more beer and check out the new Dragon Fly Canopy. - Drink more beer and send a group message to KR-Net telling the boys what we're up to. - Drink more beer & talk motors, wings, composites, instruments, control hardware, wood, etc....... 18:00 - Walk ( because we've had too much beer) to one of a few nice restaurants within 10 min's walk. - Have a nice dinner... more KR talk... more beer... 20:00 - Take a taxi/cab to a hotel if you've had too much beer or I can accommodate 2 guests in my house. We're hoping to attract about 8 to 12 builders for our KR day. requirements - BYOB and buy your own dinner at the restaurant. I'll have a plentifull supply of free ( dot 5% beer). That's my building beer!! If you'd like to come or want more info please email me "privately"... (NOT KRNET). I'll post this message again about once every 2 weeks with an update and try not to use up too much bandwidth and mailbox space. From: "Mark Langford" Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 15:02:51 -0500 X-Message-Number: 14 I talked to Troy today about the new wing. He's got almost 40 hours on it, and had the following comments. He says the plane is far more stable at high speed than before, and climbs like crazy at something like 110 mph. The only "trade off" (keeping in mind that the stall speed is about the same) is that you have to go a little further down the runway before rotating. That's because of the slightly higher drag of the new wing at high angles of incidence to get the same liftoff rate as the old wing. This is not a problem, by any means, since the plane still takes off much shorter than it lands. It just tends to balance the takeoff distance a little closer to the landing distance. The higher drag at higher incidence is also better for slowing you down while landing, which is a good thing in my mind. On another note, he was underwhelmed by the replies to his offer to sell his Revmaster 2180 engine for $4000. So now it's $2500 or best offer. I can't believe nobody wants this engine and prop. The deal is firewall forward, everything but the cowling. It has a new Slick mag, Ellison throttle body (he never got the Mikunis quite perfect enough), was meticulously rebuilt 40 hours ago by an A&P (Troy). He says he has more power than ever, and cylinder head temps are even between the four. His hope is that somebody will bring a truck to the Gathering, and afterwards will drive down to Columbia TN (where he lives) and he'll take it off and let you have it. He has a C-85 that he wants to put in it next. I'll bet if you were going to buy it, he'd let you test fly it first too! You can page him (leave your name and number) at 1-800-910-1354, since he's on the road right now... Please respond right away so I will know what to do. Welcome Larry, The gathering begins Friday as people start to gather. Friday is mainly an arrival day and makes for good hanger talk. If I am not mistaken, there will be a BBQ at the hanger for those who are there. Main events are Saturday the 25th (all day and evening). Most depart on Sunday. We are driving down from Wisconsin and expect to arrive around noon Friday and leave Sunday. It's totally up to you if you want to arrive Thursday night. Kentucky - 4 days and counting!!! Is there a charge for the gathering, barbeque or banquet? See you there. The stats are in, the new landing gear weighs almost 10 pounds less than the old and it is much, much stronger as well as mounts the wheels in the appropriate position. Cost so far Fiberglass and Epoxy = $85 Steel for brackets = $45 Welding = $FREE I think that free welding may have just made this a worth while mod! :o) -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Building New Gear Legs http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ http://www.evansville.net/~boeing/project_viking/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Web Page Update From: "Dean Collette" Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 22:39:28 -0500 X-Message-Number: 30 O.K., so it's not a real update - I haven't touched my project since July. But I have been thinking about airplanes. I posted some pictures from the National Championship Air Races in Reno. If you have never been to this event - schedule it, book the trip, pencil it in - do whatever you need to, but make sure you get there. This was Outstanding!!! In my humble opinion, this is much more fun then Oshkosh - not as interesting, but WAY more fun. http://www.execpc.com/~drdean/home.htm Dean Collette Milwaukee, Wisconsin mailto:drdean@execpc.com Web Page at http://www.execpc.com/~drdean/home.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: KR Movie From: jscott.pilot@juno.com Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 20:57:15 -0700 X-Message-Number: 31 On Sun, 19 Sep 1999 08:59:08 -0400 Donald Reid writes: > Ross Youngblood wrote: > > > > Jeff sent me some comments on the new trial web idea I > > had at http://www.krnet.org/KRnew.html > > > Nice look, but the sound effect is like an old car that I used to > own. > > Thanks. I was there only 2 days but still had a great time. There was a down fall too, no pun intended, 2 AT-6's had a mid-air during the start of a race. One plane survived and landed and the other did not. If you haven't gone, do so before all the great planes are no longer. John F.
