Update, I'm outta here this afternoon and will be flying the Bonanza over to Barkley to start getting things set up. Weather looks like it is going to be great with temps in the low 70's with no weather to speak of at all. A large high is situated in the Midwest with the jet stream dropping down to mid Kentucky today. This makes for some fabulous weather in this part of the country. Just got a forward from Junkman.................Jim Faughn has a great eye catcher idea. We'll let him show and tell. He may just like smaller airplanes. Seriously, tho, the KR-1, I've been told, is a bit less sensitive on the controls than a Teenie Two. I have a KR-1 and it's a real blast to fly. Ailerons are a bit quicker acting than the KR-2. Wood, foam, and fiberglass airplanes are much quieter on the ground than metal ones. The engine from your Teenie would probably work well on the KR-1 and you might be able to pick up a KR-1 boat from someone for 500 bucks to get you started. If you're interested in a KR-1, be sure you check out Bill Reents KR website, if you don't already know about it. http://www.twocom.com/billskr/nonframe.html Ed Janssen -----Original Message----- From: HAshraf@aol.com To: KR-net users group Date: Wednesday, September 22, 1999 12:32 AM Subject: [kr-net] Re: Planeless in Southern California! >In a message dated 99-09-21 21:31:36 EDT, you write: > ><< > I am trying to decide if I want to build another Teenie or try a KR-1. I have received an offer of the donation of a complete KR spruce kit to the project. Troy Petteway, who is single engine and twin engine seaplane rated and who built and is flying the first KR with the new wing, is interrested in joining the project and will be the pilot. There is still a lot of work to do but it is starting to look like it is a doable (sp?) project. The Aeronautical Engineering departments of both the University of Illinois and North Carolina State are interrested. With only two years until the first race in Italy there isn't going to be much time for exotic design work. I am thinking along the lines of a narrowed, single seat, KR-2 with a second generation of the new wing airfoil, Mole tail and custom designed low drag floats. Since the rules allow any engine that you can stuff in the cowl and stay under the 1100 lb. weight limit, something on the order of a 150 hp Lycoming will probably be the engine of choice. There was a post recently enquiring about the KR-1 single place design. This project should result in a dynamite single place KR, I guess we should call it a KR-1SC for KR-1 Schneider Cup Will have a lot more information after the Gathering. Ashok and Troy are both going to be there and I hope to have a lot of discussion about this project. The Schneider Cup is an International air race with significant National pride on the line for the entries from each country. If there ever was a chance to gain world wide attention for the KR design this is it. A KR flying the stars and stripes competing with the best from around the world is a neat thing to think about. A better solution would be to remove one pair of the fittings that dont match then using them as a pattern make a new set of fittings with identical holes for the bolts in the wood but drill the hole for the main attachment bolt to match the hole in the fittings still on the spar. If there is much misallignment you may want to enlarge the head of the fitting to ensure there is adequate material around the large bolt hole. Plugging the holes in the spar is a very iffy procedure. W.G. Business pressures have kept me busy for the past month. Better let me know the model of carb. Also suspect that we will all be using the same model. I'm using a 2180 Type 4 with a 9 to 1 compression ration and the Diehl back with mag & starter. I've got the GP intake system and although I don't have the carb yet, it looks like it will mount directly below the oil drain sump. Will have to do something about moving it either forward or back. Probably back. After looking at the alternatives, my thought is to use 2" alum tube, about 1/8 inch wall, with a carb mounting plate on one end and a 90 degree tube welded for the hot air. Will use 2 shut off plates joined by a bar so that as 1 opens, the other closes. Assembly would be about 6 inches long and the heat tube welded at the front of the assembly so as to modify the air flow before it reaches the carb. Would be able to mount a filter and cold air pickup on the cowl just about anywhere and connect with the air box by coil hose and the same to the heat muff. Believe it would give a lot of flexibility for just about any installation. Would weld a tab on the top of the heat box to bolt it to the engine. Although it will probably be a little heavier than a sheet metal square box, it would be a lot simpler. Would have to build a test model to make sure it works. Any suggestions??
