Pushrod Under Seat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Pushrods again From: "John Martindale" Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 3:24:51 X-Message-Number: 1 Hmmm Good points Mike and Don. I don't know where I got the 90 lb from either. I expect it derives from some Australian standard somewhere and I don't know whether it means in a 1G situation ie. straight and level. The additional G in a turn would argue for cables where the effect would simply be to increase tension equally on both up and down cables as opposed to a buckling moment in a pushrod. For me the push rod advantages are: 1) under the seat provided one accepts a reduced AOI to give space under the rear spar.. 2) no holes through the fin spar. 3) Two less pulley assys to build. 4) Reduced maintenance...in Australia, cables are meant to be removed, untwisted a little, and inspected every three years. 4) Can provide an elevator counter balance a la Mark Langford or similiarly off the rear spar idler arm. The latter puts the counterbalance closer to the C of G and not in the tail. 5) Less slop, especially in hot weather or when cable lengths differ in tension between the primary and follow up.....yes, I know, now I'm scratching!! 6)I have a personal predujuce, probably unjustified, about swaged cables having suffered a failure in an Auster of an aileron cable swage during my training years ago. On the other hand, push rods can rust internally with little means of inspection (ask any early Moonee owner), cables are lighter and all loads are in tension, pushrods should have bearing rod ends that are expensive compared to clevis pin arrangements. Mark's system is diplomatic....he has the best of both worlds!! Good to hear from you again Mike. See Ya Aussie John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Fuel tanks and CG From: "Robert Smith" Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 07:26:06 -0500 X-Message-Number: 2 I have three questions: 1) how do you close off the ends of the plastic pipe? 2) is the plastic fuel proof? and 3) what about baffles? When you bank the plane with a "pipe tank" half full is there a problem? From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 08:00:56 EST X-Message-Number: 3 Ed, and anyone else interested. Mark Langford has pictures of his spar tapering on his website. Check out Don's design on the builder's site and Mark's pictures on his web site. I think if good constructive conversation returns daily, as has been going on lately, I might have to get off the digest and take the daily KRNet pill again. Too bad Mark, is no longer taking the "daily dose" of KRNet. If I had a system like yours, I could solve any horizonal trim problems with just a simple system transferring fuel around from tank to tank. With all of your inventions I bet you have a great KR. I would like to see it at a KR Gathering. Are you flying? Will you have your KR at the next KR Gathering? How long have you been building your KR? This plane has been flown single center seated pilot. The pushrod going underneath the seat is a blessing when sitting in the center. If it had the plans cable system one would have to leave your pants in the back to make an easier pathway for the top cable to pass through !! Sorry about that !! Butt I do like the tube system.
