I know there are systems rated for the weights of some of these planes that have gone down. I myself am removing the aft aux fuel in my sonerai to install. Some people could and I suppose will call this paranoid but all to our own I guess. Ya know I think even Steve Wittman would have been saved with the use of one. Now before someone has to pick this apart as is standard I believe you can get your chute deployment set to work at the higher cruise speeds alot of our planes are operating. ----in fact if I remember right someone said the certified Cirrus is coming with one standard. Depends on what you're looking for. If you're not deflecting the cables more than 5 degrees (more or less), you can use fairleads. Wicks and AS&S have nylon fairleads intended for installing in wood bulkheads or blocks. There are also some very simple, lightweight, inexpensive one-piece nylon fairleads with their own mounting pads and holes in the Leading Edge Airfoils catalog at about a buck apiece (http://www.leadingedge-airfoils.com), their part no. D2300. The hole through which the cable passes is 0.157", so 3/32" cable is no sweat. Then there are the nylon cable guide tube ideas as used in the Rutan aircraft. The M-19 "Flying Squirrel" also uses nylon cable guide tubes extensively (except I'm using fairleads and pulleys instead, by personal preference). They will warrantee them as long as you own them or will offer trade-in value on other equipment. They have just introduced an ANC headset that is a bit pricey but with the generous trade in allowance it is a bit more affordable. Something like $150.00. With a differently shaped blade (thin at the tip) and cross section (fatter?) it's hard to give exact numbers but it's about 1.5 degrees less pitch at 20" from center than the old prop and about 1 degree less at the tip. I only gained about 100 rpm (static) but I'd guess the loaner (Aymar DeMuth 52 x 42) has a more efficient airfoil because I got 150 to 200 more fpm in climb. Maybe it's pushing more air with less rotational drag or something the engineers can explain, but static rpm's aren't the whole story. The old prop was made by American Propeller Co., stamped 52 x 46. Because the old spinner wouldn't fit over the loaner prop I flew without one and didn't test the top speeds. The nose is pretty flat where the spinner would have covered so the speeds wouldn't mean much anyway. The cht's were about 50 degrees higher in cruise and it got hot quicker than it would have with a spinner so I didn't push it. I'll put some new photo's on the web site this coming week, it's been months since I even looked at it. As suggested by the regulars on here, I had Oscar get used to the stick at around 100 mph. Within a few seconds he mastered the touch, even using his left hand which must feel odd the first time. On the descent back to the field we got the speed up a bit and still no PIO's. At modest speeds it's easy to get the feel for it. Ya know I think even Steve Wittman would have been saved with the >use of one. I hope there's more information about this crash soon and what was the nature of the field where this plane crashed. I've read in many sources that engine-out fatalities in general-aviation planes usually result from stall/spin rather than the engine failure, because people get nervous and don't follow their energency-landing procedures. Maybe a P-51 copy is so hot that it doesn't qualify as a GA plane and can't be deadstick landed, or maybe the field he had available had too many obstructions. If I remember right, Wittman's plane disintegrated in flight almost from flutter when the fabric came off a wing. I'm not sure a ballistic chute will work if the fuselage is no longer intact.
