[Fwd: corvair motor] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: KR-2 Speed -vs- Hp From: "Seifert, Richard E" Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 08:31:25 -0800 X-Message-Number: 1 Good speeds are possible with the VW engine. I completed my KR2 stretched (pre-KR2S) in 1989 and used a Type 3 universal case, built up to 2064cc with turbo. Ignition is a single Slick magneto and the engine is set up for 3400rpm at 34" manifold pressure at take off using a 54 x 54" Props Inc. propeller. Empty weight is 600 lb's and I'm using the retractable gear. The engine now has 400 hours and has been relatively trouble free. Performance at low altitude is comparable to a normally aspirated VW powered KR ( 150mph cruse ). I prefer to cruse at 7000 to 9000 feet where I can take advantage of the turbo. A these altitudes my KR2 trues out at 170mph at 27" manifold pressure. It will go faster, I have had it up to 230 in a slight dive, but why push it. The 170mph speed has been verified by two way timed distances and by GPS. My engine/airframe likes this speed range and I'm happy with it. My only comment to those looking at alternative engines is "look at what other KR's are flying with". The completion rate of successful homebuilt aircraft is not great and experimenting with alternative engines only makes it more difficult. When I began building my KR I learned that when deviating from the instructions, plan on the task taking four times as long. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: kr-net digest: November 28, 1999 From: Gognij@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 12:45:39 EST X-Message-Number: 2 I am in need of a 52*42 prop that will fit a Great Plains prop hub. If you have one I can be reached at Gognij@aol.com. I could not bring up the Kr net web sight a little while ago so I am trying this route.
