I have even gone to a porsch repair shop and weighed one. It weighed 425 lbs. You might be able to cut it to 390 but I don't think the aircraft, in it current design, would be able to hold it. If you beef up the airplane to handle that much you will be looking at a 1000 basic weight a/c. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: R: grass landings From: "Franco Bucci" Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 16:09:50 +0100 X-Message-Number: 4 I have a standard KR 2 with RR fixed gear and standard RR tailwheel. Engine is a 1835 cc Great Plains conversion,no flaps. I have used in my 200 hours of flying several grass strips, with no big problems. But i recommend to use strips with a good surface, because the standard tailwheel is very little and my be a problem if the surface is no good. Remember that in a grass strip is very important the grass will be cut, because the take off distance is very influenced by the hight of the grass. I think my english language be intelligible. From: "Mark Langford" Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 14:49:02 -0600 X-Message-Number: 13 NewAirFoilHeads, I was talking to a builder in Edmunton Alberta yesterday, and we were discussing the fact that he wanted to use the new airfoil but his horizontal stab was already set at 0 degrees of incidence. He mentioned that his fuselage was leveled using the firewall, which isn't usually really "level" with the upper longeron anyway. I told him that if he was lucky, maybe his fuselage was actually "nose up" when he "leveled' his horizontal stab, and that if he'd just change his reference plane from the firewall to the longeron (using a 2' level centered between main and aft wing spars) his horizontal stab might just be pointed down after all. Well then a little light came on in my head. Why not just change the incidence on the wing to get the optimal 1.75 degrees of decalage (angular difference) between wing and horizontal stabilizer, disregarding the fuselage (sort of)? Sure, now your fuselage might be pointed down .75 degrees all the time, but is that so bad? We don't really know if the fuselage has less drag at zero, -1, or +1 degrees, and the stockers have been flying nose down at 2.5 degrees for years, so what's the harm? It's more important to get that 1.75 or 2 degrees of decalage than to have the fuselage flying level, and I don't think anybody would complain about the improved visibility over the nose. Bottom line is that if you're going to use the 16% AS5046 airfoil and your horizontal stab is already glued in place at 0 degrees incidence, you might think about installing your aft wing spar (since it has to be moved anyway) only 1" above the bottom longeron, rather than the ~1.29" that a KR whose horizontal stab is set at the more optimal -.75 degrees. For those using the AS5046 who haven't installed the h/s yet, set the horizontal stab incidence at -.75 degrees and the root of the wing at +1 degrees using the level lines on the templates. It might be pointed out that measuring up from the longeron and fixing the aft spar at some certain distance is really not the way to do this. A better method would be to keep the fuselage level and make a new level line on the templates. This new level line would be as shown at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/tet/eco1.jpg . By the way, the jaggies on this image are from the process of converting the CAD file to a JPEG image that will actually fit on your screen. The templates are actually very smooth. Sorry I didn't think of this earlier, but it sure does solve the dilema of how to retrofit an already built (or flying) KR without having to hack up the horizontal stabilizer. For you guys who've glued your horizontal stab in place AND have glued the aft spar in place for the new airfoil, you can take solace in the fact that Troy Petteway's plane is exactly the same way and is still a major improvement. I'll now have to create another version of the AS5046 templates with this "engineering change order" incorporated for those who can't change their horizontal stab incidence but want to use the new wing. I've also gotten around to writing a set of "AS5046 Installation Instructions", which are now posted at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/tet/as5046inst.html . They include all of this new found wisdom, and a few more thoughts and images....
