However, I haven't had a problem with my plane in anywhere near the conditions you describe. My plane configuration is very similar in weight and a taildragger. I think you should check the alignment of your main wheels. If they are off, then you may not see this problem at low crosswinds however when the wind increases then you may have both the crosswind along with a tire alignment assisting each other. In my case, I had to shim the axles so my alignment was correct. Jim Faughn 4323D Laclede Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108 (314) 652-7659 mailto:jfaughn@mvp.net N891JF -------------- Dear KR2 people , We have one major concern which is the cross-wind performance of the aircraft on take off. I have a fully steerable tailwheel and can easily control the direction as long as the tail is on the ground. The problem occurs as the tail lifts : at low speed and with a stbd cross wind higher than 5 knots, it seems practically impossible to keep the aircraft straight. The torque of the engine contributes mostly to this quite sudden and almost uncontrolable swing as soon as the tail wheel lifts , and also the gyroscopic effect , but not in as major proportions. After investigating different ways to overcome the problem (tail wheel springs, etc), my test pilot and I came to the conclusion that the best solution would probably be to build a larger rudder. I had a look at your very impressive website, hoping to find a picture of a KR2 with a bigger rudder, but couldn't find any... At which point I wonder if I am the only KR2 builder/pilot to experience this problem and if so - why ?! Anyway, in the January Experimenter magazine (EAA's), there's a note from tool and die maker Neil Sidders (n.sidders@att.net) in which he says he makes custom tapered needles for the Posa, as well as standard ones. I understand that even standard ones are rare as hen's teeth, but he apparently has recipes for what it takes to make one run correctly, so you Posa guys might want to keep him in mind. He says anybody's welcome to email him, so there you go... My cost to register the finished aircraft...... $.02 per pound of licensed gross weight for the first two years, $.015 the next two years, and finally $.01 (yep, a penny a pound) from then on. In most states you can certify that the plane is still in parts and that it is not licensed to fly....Yet. Once it is, then you will have to show how much you spent on the parts, and prove how much of that you paid in state taxes if you expect to not pay taxes on 100% of the costs. Just my humble opinion, but you might want to make many of those Wicks and Spruce orders for parts for your cars and houses and have a minimal number of major parts for the tax man. I think Mark Langford has an annual battle with the tax folks in Alabama over his N number and unfinished airplane, so he may be willing to post the specific key words he used to tell them to buzz off. Jeff, how right you are! Here's what I wrote on July 30, 1999: ----- Well, this is off the subject, but I'm just letting you know that if you register early, this little pleasure awaits you too. Some of you old timers may remember a few years ago when I whined about the state of Alabama wanting me to pay taxes on my airplane that didn't exist yet. That event was triggered by my early registration in order to lock in my tail number (as if anybody else would want N56ML for some reason). After I explained that it wasn't an airplane yet, they said "fine, then send us all the receipts (and pay taxes) for everything you've ever bought to construct it from out of state, and an update each month". My answer to that was never buy anything out of state after that. But now the COUNTY wants to know how much my project is worth so they can tax me on it. I'm just a little peaved that they're going to tax a pile of wood that may some day be an airplane. Any of you guys ever paid taxes on a car you've got jacked up on blocks? I didn't think so. I'm sure that Alabama isn't the only state that does this, but when you register a homebuilt here, the state immediately wants you to pay taxes on it, just like if you were registering a new car. --------- Well, since I posted that, I called my brother-in-law the tax assessor, and he said that my county was obviously treating my airplane as if it were a house under construction. Apparently you start paying taxes on THE MATERIALS in a house, just as soon as construction is started. I'm getting the same treatment now from the county. The good news is that it's only $40 or so a year, and when it's finished they'll have to rely on me for its value (not having any other info to go on) which should be about $100 or so. It shouldn't be too hard to demonstrate that you can't even sell a finished KR for the cost of the materials you have in it. I've been collecting KR "for sale" ads for just that reason. I haven't heard anything from the state since the initial inquisition. They wanted me to send them a check MONTHLY for the tax on everything I'd bought out of state. But then I haven't bought any aircraft parts from out of state since then either... Obviously, I didn't mean that I was going to tell them that my PLANE was only going to be worth $100, but that my TAXES would only be about $100. That's a real world guestimate too, assuming that my plane will be worth maybe $15,000, despite the fact that I'll easily have $18,000 in it. You don't see many sell for any MORE than that (I'm not real sure that I've seen ONE), but you sure see a lot for less. It's that big question of construction quality that prevents KRs from selling for as much as the pile of materials would have been...
