Title of item: KR-2S Airplane Kit 180MPH 2-seat aircraft Seller: tom.andersen@attws.com Starts: Apr-01-00 07:12:32 PST Ends: Apr-08-00 08:12:32 PDT Price: Currently $305.00 To bid on the item, go to: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=298095361 Item Description: The KR-2S is the stretched version of the KR-2, and is a 2 seater designed for tall pilots. Expected cruise is 180mph at 5gph. The fuselage (widened 2"), main spars, and tail spars are already built very carefully by an A&P. The main center spar has been mounted since the picture was taken. This project package includes the wood kit for the rear spars, a KR-2S canopy, KR-2S preformed canopy frame, canopy latches, KR-2S preformed forward deck, Composit main gear package w/landing gear brackets mounted for taildragger, KR-2S wing fittings, KR-2 Rudder pedals, KR-2S bolt kit, new Cleveland 5" wheels/tires/brakes, KR-2 dual control stick unit, KR-2 tailwheel kit w/dual springs, turnbuckle kit, KR-2S preformed cowling, aileron hinges, foam kit, fiberglass kit, cables and pulleys, and KR-2 and KR-2S plan supplements. These parts all together cost $6882 from the kit manufacturer Rand Robinson Engineering. (Their web page is at www.fly-kr.com.) All the foam and glass to build the wings, tail surfaces, and rear turtledeck according to the plans is included. (Extra foam had been purchased for the rear turtledeck.) These are the items required from Rand Robinson to complete the airplane. They total $695: Stainless Steel firewall cover $85 Flap handle $72 Trim tab nyrod kit $15 7 gallons epoxy $350 Aileron pushrods $48 Aluminum kit (for aileron bellcranks and pully brackets) $125 Cowl fasteners $30 Other items you would need to finish the airplane: 0-200 engine, engine mount, prop, and spinner($5k -$10k depending on condition and your choices.) This is the preferred engine because it gets you 180mph true airspeed cruise at SEA level @5gph. The 2100 Turbo VW w/adjustable prop from Revmaster will get you 180mph+ cruise at 8k MSL altitude @ 4.5gph. The 2180 VW will get you about 145mph cruise at sea level @ 4gph. Other engines that have been used in the KR-2 and KR-2S are the Subaru EA-8l, C-85, VW 2400 (type 4), VW 2600. I would use the O-200 or C-85. There is an engine mount available for these so it's a bolt-on affair. Instrumentation for basic VFR flight. Engine control cables. Primer, filler, and paint. Optional wheel pants ($185) This aircraft is a great-looking great-performing machine that will move you quick with very low fuel and maintenance costs. With it's height of only 5' at the canopy, this little taildragger bullet can be snuggled under the wing of most Cessna's in a hangar and save you thousands in hangar fees. Do the math, 180mph @5gph is 36mpg. Some engines can be set up for auto gas to really make it the cheapest speed around. If you like the most bang for the buck, the KR-2S is for you. If you want to get an inpection by a local EAA Tech Rep on the work I've already completed, I welcome them to my home workshop. I'm an FAA certified A&P Mechanic and I've done all the work on the kit so far. The woodwork is tight, accurate and neat. No globs of epoxy or drips. T-88 was used on all woodwork. ****************************************************** Listen to this: To help the sale of this kit I will deliver the kit myself anywhere between Florida and North Carolina at no extra charge! This includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. (Other states may be possible but I can only promise those four states in this offer.) This offer alone is worth hundreds of dollars and will save you a lot of time, engergy, and aggravation. Rich Parker >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I woke up this morning at about 2:00 AM to the wail of several smoke detectors. I have 7 of them wired together, so if a fire starts anywhere in the house (including the basement) everybody's aware of it pretty quickly. It didn't take long to figure out that nothing upstairs was on fire, so I opened the basement door and was greeted with a dull orange glow and a terrified cat. My worst fears had been realized. A fire was blazing right under my instrument panel! Fortunately I have about 5 fire extinguishers located close by, and quickly doused the 3 foot flames. The bad news is that my new Terra radio and transponder, all those nice instruments, my main spar, wing tanks, fuselage bottom and both fuselage sides were TOAST! It was almost burned in half! Looks like I'll get that chance to build one the RIGHT way next time around! I woke up this morning thinking maybe I'll do an RV6 next, maybe using a nice certified 0-300 this time around. Strictly by the plans, you know? What a way to start an April Fool's day, with a nightmare like that. I hope I don't have any more dreams like that anytime soon... Flew Saturday for 1/2hr, shot the bull for 2hrs, then fueled up for some night flying later on. Only problem was with that plan was, when I got home the wife had a list of chores that wore me out to the point that I was too tired to fly [you have to know me to know how tired that is]. So, there is always Sunday after church. The whole day is mine. Can you guess where it's spent? Installed the 2nd breakaway plate on the right wing stub, above the landing gear. This is an idea I came up with since the end of the spring bar has cracked the glass 3 times on the left and twice on the right[largly due to where I have taken the "2." This plate has proven to work great. Now it dimples the aluminum plate instead of cracking the skin, and the bolts holding the wheel castings can be inspected. When that was completed, I went out flying a Piper Arrow for an hour. That was the first in 2yrs that I had flown a production airplane. What a pig to fly. Slow to respond, very heavy on the controls, hard to taxi, it was not that much fun. But, our son and his wife would like to go on some trips with us, and there isn't much room to work the controls in a KR with four people in there. So I'm getting current again with the FBOs Arrow [I do miss flying the C421 thou]. After parking the Arrow I went and pulled the "2" out and fired her up and went out for a while. THAT IS FUN!!!!!!!!!! Jumps up cause she wants to fly, light on the controls, responds now [not 2hrs later] easy to taxi, and with the bubble canopy the whole sky all around you. Someone will have to kill me to get me to part with my KR. Don't get me wrong, the production planes are fine, and the big twins are great for long cross countries in comfort, but I've been flying my "2" since may of '98 and it still has not lost any of the excitement, thrill, laughter, fun, ect. I got my first ride when I was 5, started working the controls at 10, now 48 and on my 5th log book, flew corporate, cargo, tree top photo, rides in sailplanes, rides in powerplanes, hard IFR at night, over mountains, with a load of ice and on de-ice equipment, total nav/com failure while hard IFR, engine failure on takeoff [single eng airplane], total fuel exhaustion at 11,000 ft, wind shear [that was fun, it was at night out running thunder storms], and more. What this all adds up to is, this little machine recharges my spirit of flight every time I get in it and fly. With all of the airplanes added up, from the sailplanes to the Cessna 421C, the KR2 is the most fun I have ever had. All of you that are building, hang in there. I do not think you will regret any of the time spent. Build strait, use your head and keep it simple, and you should have what has to be one of the best airplanes ever built. My hat is off to Ken Rand for a super little "gal." Hope your watching Ken, cause you sure make me happy. Sorry for boring you guys, it was just another great day in the neighbor hood. The major difference is that if you simply hit "Reply" you'll send your reply directly to the person that posted the message, and NOT to the list. If you hit "Reply All", you'll also send one to the list members as well. This was done intentionally to cut down on some of the unecessary chatter, not to curtail the transfer of information. I know I've gotten several replies that I'm pretty sure were intended to go to the whole list. I think if you've sent a message to the list and you never saw it appear, you can probably bet that you never actually sent it to the net. Check your "Sent Items" (or whatever it's called) mailbox and you'll probably find your answer. There are still only 280 members at the moment. We had over 600 in the last few weeks before Telelist died. I heard from a guy yesterday who was on the old KRNet digest when it died, and he thought KRNet had died completely. Yesterday I soldered the final connections on the radio and transponder coax and tested the system for strobe noise and it was dead silent, as installed. I tested what I'd been told about grounds just for kicks. I moved the strobe ground 6 inches away from the avionics ground and a little noise returned. Ground them to exactly the same place and it goes away. My ground system is the turned-back ledge on the bottom of my instrument panel. From testing, I could mount my strobe power supply to the end of the stub wing and get away with it, but for good measure I'm putting it in the wing tip. My Corvair is being held up too, as I'm waiting on some stuff from William W. as well. I'm going to try to spend more time in the basement and less time on the computer. You guys carry on... With todays electronics running on such small voltages, it only takes a minute amount of difference in resistance, eg., the difference in conductivity between copper and aluminum over a certain distance to elevate the ground above zero and cause hums and interference. This is one reason why printed circuit boards these days in GPS's etc have carefully designed wire lengths (sort of like tuned exhausts or diesel injector lines). Keep em grounded all at one point and ideally at the battery post.
