I had the same problem as you until I made the conversion. It's a simple bolt-on conversion. You should be able to buy a Subaru starter from the junkyard. Also, you will need to buy an adapter plate from Dan Deihl (sorry, I don't have his phone#/address at hand). The availability of info about the KR series on the web and through this net being an important factor in my decision. However, I have a few questions; - What are the G-forces a KR2S can handle (+/-, both single and with passenger)? The spars seem OK to me, but are my doubts about the wing attachements in place? - What's the reason the KR2S hasn't got a retractable gear anymore? Could a KR2S be fitted with retracts? And what would be the penalty in weight or strenght? - Are there Flight Simulator files available for KR-planes? Just to keep myself motivated during months/years of building ;)(I already found some for Sonex and RV's, but that's not the same) Thanks, Mark Gijsen, Belgium ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 May 2000 08:30:09 -0700 To: Mark.GIJSEN@MOBILE.BELGACOM.BE From: Greg S Martin Cc: krnet@mailinglists.org Subject: Re: KR> retracts Message-ID: <20000515.083009.-147163.0.idrawtobuild@juno.com> > - What's the reason the KR2S hasn't got a retractable gear anymore? > Could a > KR2S be fitted with retracts? For them I think that is great. I have the retract on my KR-1. This is the second one. I had to set the old one down on a plowed field and I left the gear up. It only took me 5 weeks to have it back in the air. I don't believe that would have been the case with stiff sticks under me. I'm still working on my retro gear fit for retract. So far I have been able to remove 3.5 lbs. It's the gear doors that need to be simplified. I do believe I have found the answers to the doors to allow them to work trouble free. In conclusion, I like the retract gear and the safety it provides. I've flown nothing but retract for the last 2300 hr. and I really like. And yes, Janette still has the materials for the retract or she can get it. Good luck and happy building and/or flying. While retracts can be faired in somewhat, the fact remains that they stick out from under the wing something like 4". While this is usually a drag, it helps protect the belly from damage when you land it gear-up or after folding upon a hard landing (while puncturing your wing). If you've got the hots for retracts, check out Don Betham's neat retractable gear made from a small motorcycle's forks, which I'm looking for the pictures of at the moment... I can't really see where the structural integrity would be jeopardized. This would also give you much more room in each stub wing to build fuel tanks between the main and aft spar. Why didn't I think of this when I was designing my cable routing. I have redone my aileron cables three times and really like the arrangement I have now but I can not have stub wing tanks.
