Do you know of one that does? I'm sure that is a consideration also. A standard equation for the ideal propeller diameter is: { HP } 1/4 D = 360 { ----------------------} { N^2 Vmax } N^2 = Propeller speed in rpm, squared HP = engine horsepower Vmax = maximum plane speed in ft per second D = prop diameter in feet. (the stuff inside the { } is raised to the 1/4 power.) For example, my O-200 puts out 100 HP at 2750 rpm. 200 mph is 293.3 ft per sec, so the ideal prop diameter will be approximately 5.25 feet = 63 inches. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 13:34:48 -0400 To: "'krnet@mailinglists.org'" From: Donald Reid Subject: Re: KR> Prop size Message-Id: <4.2.0.58.20000605131532.00958890@pop.erols.com> --=====================_1475976==_.ALT Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed In the equation given below, N is the prop speed. The three parameters are power, airspeed and engine speed. This equation comes from a NACA Technical report and represents one, and only one, "best" set of circumstances. If you want the most efficient prop at Vmax, then that is what you use. If you want to be most efficient at cruise conditions, then that is what you use. A prop is a compromise. The equation actually represents a single point on a two-dimensional graph from the NACA Tech Report. One axis is V/nD (V is airspeed, n is prop speed, and D is prop diameter. The other axis of the graph is g-sub-c times P divided by rho n-squared V. g-sub-c is a conversion factor, P is horsepower, rho is air density, n is prop speed and V is airspeed. The graph has a family of curves on it that represent prop efficiency. Maximum efficiency is approximately 87 percent. At that maximum, you combine terms and rearrange the factors in the equation, and come out with an equation for ideal prop diameter. It is D = {(g-sub-c P) divided by (rho n-squared V)} raised to the 0.25 power. When you plug in numbers and simplify, you get the (somewhat) simpler equation that I gave originally. As a comparison, I said that 100 HP, 200 mph, and 2750 rpm means a 63 inch prop. If instead I use cruise conditions of 65 HP, 160 mph, and 2600 rpm, then it would be a 61.5 inch prop. That is not much of a difference. >Don >This formula does not consider how fast you plan to run the prop to attain >Vmax. I received today from Clark's, my new reconditioned cylinders and are they nice! In the box was literature on new parts. For all cooling fanatics, they are contemplating manufacturing, if they have enough interest, MACHINED ALUMINUM PUSHROD TUBES WITH COOLING FINS. They will be made from 6061-T6 with cooling fins extending from both ends. There is a section in the center with no fins. These look really cool. The benefits they claim are: 1) Expand more like the block and heads sustaining a better oil seal. 2) Better oil cooling. 3) More rigid than stock tubes. Estimated selling price is $307.00 set of 12. Part number C11227. Let them know if you are interested. I would lay up the glass in sheets between 2 pieces of glass, cut out the p= ieces and flox them together followed by a strip of glass tape on the joint= s. I will probably do this with vinyl ester resin. Any input will be appreciated CURT ------------------------------ End of krnet Digest ***********************************
