Les, check Electroair at http://www.exp-aircraft.com/vendors/electroa.html . They have crank fired ignition systems (like the one on Troy's KR2) that include knock sensors, as well as altitude compensation (advancing the timing at higher altitudes). Also there was an article in Contact's "Alternative Engines, Volume 1" regarding how to build SAE's knock detector, which displays a red LED when your engine is knocking. It's on page 37. There are also several Subaru articles in it, so it would be worth investing in for that reason, but it's a really interesting compilation of about the first 30 issues of Contact magazine. It's available from Wicks or AS&S, or direct from http://www.nonprofitnet.com/contact/ . I am happy with the power but the engine installation also weighs 205 lbs. complete and burns the stellite valve seats out every 200 hours. After 200 hours they are so far gone they have to be machined out and new ones installed. Next time (if there is one) I will have to put new heads on it as the over-size seat inserts will be too large for the head. I am still in the planning stage. I have some questions: 1. I have difficulty reaching RR, I faxed them about upgrading my plans to a KR2S as well as replacement of the fuselage sheet which I seem to have lost. I read this week that the complete KR2S book is now ready and can be had for $100 as long as no plane has been built from the original book. I qualify for that. However, it is frustrating to see that RR has not replied to my fax, which I had to send from my job as I have no working fax machine at home. I just don't understand RR not having email. Can anybody give me a better idea of how to get into contact with them? I can pay by credit card, and I need to order a KR2S book as well as upgrade a book with all changes, because mine dates from 1984. 2. If you can't hotwire polyurethane because of cyanide fumes, what about an in - flight fire? That will kill anybody outright? 3. Are there filters for extraction fans for a workshop to eliminate those bad fumes when worting with vinylester instead? 4. Is there anybody out there who actually put his plane into AutoCad or Visual Studio or such? I would pay to get a head start on that, even though I will obviously need to modify it for my changes. Mail me, let's talk. 5. Has the Ashok wing design been accredited by RR in some way? Otherwise I will have a hard time convincing the RLD (our FAA) over here that it's better than the RAF48. 6. Does anybody have plans to make wing skins based on the AS... design? Because IMHO tolerances are important with this laminar flow design. Sorry about these many questions. I want to start out, but get everything right and clear before getting going. Backgrounder: I used to live in South Africa until 1987, and in 1984 bought plans from late mr. S Halgreen (builder and owner of the ZS-UKU, and distributor and type inspector of RR in South Africa). I flew with mr. Halgreen on two occasions (even video taped some of it) He did have wing tip tanks and used had the intent to reach far out places like FACT from his home base FALA. I know for a fact that he flew non-stop from FALA to FAMG. I checked the video, but there's only evidence on the header tank being filled up. None of my photographs actually show tank filler caps, but I recall him mentioning it. The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly push through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet. Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill E-mail users out of "alternative postage fees." Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on every E-mail delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. This thing looks like it is rivited into the flange . That's a timing sensor. It faces the flywheel which triggers it (by means of a raised steel ball, if I remember correctly). I don't think the ignition system actually used it, but the sensor was connected to the computer socket as part of the testing that dealers could do during troubleshooting the engine, injection, and ignition systems. Ingenious builders could probably use it to trigger the ignition system, if you're going with the flywheel end drive system and stock flywheel... I have however, decided (based on = many KR stories) to convert mine to a fixed tri-gear. Unfortunately, = where I live there are not many people who have done this, so even the = basic information is scarce. I have asked these questions on the list = before but got no reply. I was wondering if anybody would be able to = help me with some of these basic questions: 1) How far behind the main spar does the main gear axel line have to = be? Another way to look at it, What proportion of the planes empty = weight (or MAUW at fore of aft CG limits) should be on the nose wheel. = If I load the plane up and then tip it backwards with the tail on the = ground, should the plane be able to right itself on level ground even = with full Aft CG limit. 2) Which members in the fire wall should cary the stresses from the = nose gear. I have a problem in using the lower engine mounts (as with = the Dhiel gear design) as this is where I have had to mount my Carb. I = am contemplating bending the gear tubing in through the fire wall at the = bottom and running it back (along the floor) to the centre of the main = spar and fixing it there by means of a bracket. The spring flex will be = in the tubing section inside the plane. Do you see any problems with = this? These are the the main questions that I have at this stage, which will = hopefully let me continue with the design and construction. =20 Regards Leigh Stubbs Cape Town South Africa =20 ------=_NextPart_000_001B_01C00310.AAD7BFC0-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 20:38:35 EDT To: krnet@mailinglists.org From: AviationMech@aol.com Subject: Flight Update Message-ID: I made a second flight today, and even left the pattern after three trips around the patch.
