We made it home finally last night at 11:30pm after flight delay out of Nashville. Now the rest of the story......remember I had the family with me on this journey. We boarded the flight home last night for a one hour ten minute trip from hell. Upon take off, my 18 month son began crying and would not stop. Fifteen minutes into the flight and 20,000 feet he decides to empty his stomach. Propulsion style! Hit me middle of my chest and ran down to my knees. Curdled milk that is, baby style, soaked both him and me. What looks did we get as we headed to the lavatory with curdled milk falling to the isle all the way to the rear of the plane. What a stench!!! Well, after I managed to strip him of his clothes and wrap him in a blanket, he slept the rest of the trip. Much to the delight of my wife....I was the lucky one this time. Moral of this story....next year, kids and wife stay home or kids will stay with Grandma and wife gets to come along. Gotta love it!!!!!!!!. Now on a more pleasant note, I would like to thank Dana for making this another great Gathering!!! Also thanks to all the pilots who managed to fly their KR's in despite of the weather. This one was compressed by a factor of 30 times, so the real one is a little nicer. Of course now Olympus will soon have the E-10 which has a real live twist-the-lense-to-focus SLR (rather than set a number to manually focus), which I am currently drooling over (see http://www.dpreview.com/news/0008/00082201olympuse10.asp ) and attempting to rationalize. Next year maybe I can line everybody up and snap several shots of each plane and email the results (or print out an 8x10 and mail it) to the owner/pilots. I only wish the left wing was lower and the prop was vertical on this one, but otherwise I kinda like it myself. . This one will make a very nice screen saver which I'll publish in a more screen friendly horizontal to vertical size ratio. The color is off a little because I had the color balance set on +ACI-auto+ACI- and it didn't know Marty's plane is really beige. The one I wish I'd gotten was +ACI-somebody's+ACI- KR about 50 feet off the water showing some racing jet-skis the meaning of fast. I have to agree that even though there may be no official restrictions at Ponca City, the higher the population count, the higher the odds are that somebody's going to be offended somehow... It was a pleasure to have met you and the other KR builders/enthusiasts. BTW: I am receiving some responses to my earlier request regarding the MI/OH builders and I should have also included Indiana. There are some builders/flyers in Indiana that are relatively close to the Michigan border. I aplogize for excluding you in my earlier email. Also, I don't have a website at the moment. I used to have one at Earthlink, but I took it down. I plan to put my site up again. When it's up and running I'll send a note to the net. Until then ... Type 1 verses type 4--- why don't I see very many type four engines out the= re? What are the problems with them and so on? One book I'm reading said th= at the type 4 has no place in an airplane! Any comments???? Another question I have pertains to brakes, I have just finished modifying = a set of original drum brakes, I machined a set of drums out of ductile (a = type of cast bar) with thicker walls in an effort to get more breaking powe= r, the ductile does not deform under load like the stamped drums, also duct= ile has the same type of porosity as a standard break drum! I shouldn't hav= e as much of a problem with runout as with the other drums. The wheels DO N= OT need to be modified to except the new drums, they just simply bolt on in= place of the old ones. Has anyone made any similar modifications to there brakes? I'm sure there are some that will say just go buy some hydraulics, but some= of us have a hard time spending the $500-$600 for brakes, I'm on a very ti= ght budget, besides, the airport where I will be keeping my airplane has a = 8000 foot runway! Who knows! If there is a notable improvement over the original drums, some = people may want to have a set made, I have the drawings!!!!! From information I have read, the type IV block is cast from an aluminum/magnesium material, making it stronger that the type 1 block. The block is slightly longer than the type 1, requiring a longer engine cowling. The type IV engine was also larger displacement than the type 1. My engine was stock at 2000 cc. With larger cylinders and pistons from Greatplanes, the displacement became 2400cc. I chose the type IV for the stronger block and the larger displacement without the risk of a stroker crank. The type IV engine was not used in the Bug, it was used in the Transporter and a squareback vehicle, therefore it is much harder to find one. Mine also came stock with hydraulic lifters, no frequent valve adjustments required...so they say. See my article at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kvw.html for an overview of Type 1 vs Type 4. At the Gathering Orma told me he has over 500 hours on his Type 4 and only pulled one head off one time. In my book, that means it has every right to be an airplane engine. The Type 1 case contained the lighter but weaker magnesium. The Type 4 is all aluminum, and is beefed up where it needs to be for longevity...
