Message-ID: <3AB17DD0.A68AEAE7@home.com> Jon, This wire will be adequate for doing some of the work but the description looks like 7 stranded 24AWG gauge wire? Seven thin wires in a shielded cable? For wiring printer cables ? Thats what it sounds like.... here are a couple of things that bother me about this. 1) PVC insulation is not really very nice stuff if it melts. A/C wire uses teflon insulation, which is not as toxic when it melts/burns. (I hesitate to say non-toxic) I know PVC gives off nasty stuff when it burns. 2) The shielding sounds like it is around the entire cable, not the individual strands, while it will help noise somewhat, and is better than non-sheilded cable, there could be noise coupled from the individual strands to each other, if one of the wires in the cable ends up carrying noise. Individual shielded wire would be better. 3) You will need heavier gauge wire for some of the 12V applications in your aircraft. Tony Bengilis has some charts in his books on wire gauges and current carrying capacity, and Jim Weir also has some tables. I recall buying #6 (big) for the battery cable then some #10 and #12 for the primary 12V power bus routing in my KR (possibly some #14 as well), then I went down to #18 and #22 for some of the radio low current stuff. For the speaker and microphone jacks on my radio I used shielded A/C wire, and probably went overkill on grounding those pesky braided pigtails (a major hassle). If the cable you have is really #24 gauge then it is designed for lower current signals (like the information from the computer going to a printer or scanner)... this is a slightly differnet current carrying condition than trying to power a gyro or lots of lights. I'm thinking that mose computer chips I/O pins can drive about 8ma of current. I can't recall what a typical circuit load is for stuff, but in many cases you are going to have circuits protected by 1A-3A circut breakers or fuses (depending on what you decide)... so you should use thicker wiring for those circuits. I had the computer up in two days, but couldn't get email until I re-formatted and re-installed Windows Pain edition ME. Another thought came to me on the wiring. It is possible to purchase teflon coated wire in various COLORS from wire distributors, but you do have to purchase it in spools of 250' or so. I looked high and low and could not find it at most of the electronics places (Frys on the west coast for example). But if you know a distributor you should be able to order the stuff. I was hoping to order RED teflon wire for +12V, and Black teflon wire for GND, unfortunatly I gave up before ordering the wire, and just went with the mil-spec (boring color) wite wire for wiring everything. I did go to the trouble to install terminal strips at the firewall and at the instrument panel as recommended by Jim Weir's articles. Man did that make things WONDERFUL! I have numbered the terminal strips 1-6 at the firewall and the instrument panel and all my wires have numbered tags... looks like Boeing built the wiring on my KR. The great thing is a year or two after doing the wiring, I can look at the numbers on my schematic (1=battery, 2=alternator, 3= ignition etc), and STILL figure out where things are! I recommend this. If folks want to see what this looks like, I belive I have a photo of the firewall side on my website....Nope, couldnt' find them... I'll take some tonight. -- Ross ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 22:54:21 -0500 To: "kr2s group" From: "Albert Pecoraro" Subject: Re: KR> Re: KR1-Tandem Message-ID: <003001c0adcc$ca217da0$add4b23f@steelcase.com> >>> To get started you need to get a copy of the Roncz aircraft design spreadsheets and copies of the Sport Aviation articles that they accompanied. There were some things changed in the KR-2S for no other reason than "well, we thought it would be a good idea." I have spoken with Jeanette about several differences between the KR-2 and KR-2S, and this is the reason that I personally have received each time. By way of example, another place you will see a change (subtle, very subtle) is the aft spar of the H-Stab. The KR-2S has a 1/4-inch plywood doubler on it that extends ~ 2/3 of the way out the spar. I built mine to the KR-2 plans. I spoke to a retired aero engineer/A&P friend who knows Stuart Robinson very well and asked him to take a look. He shook his head for some time and could not think of a reason why it would be there. He chewed on this for some number of days, so this was not an off the cuff comment on the design. Follow sound building practices throughout your work, and if you have questions, hit up the members of the net for answers. As you can see, you are not the first one to do something the KR-2 way on his KR-2S! Good building! Respectfully, Dave "Zipper" Goodman zipperts@whidbey.net P.S. Fire Wall forward Cam100 suggests The most popular radiator in use by our owners is the Rabbit diesel. It measures 12"X 26"X 1.5". I am looking at gauges and have several choises , some start and 90* and others end at 550*. I'd like one where normal happens in the middle of the gauge's range. One advantage of up-draft carb is having fuel lines under the engine in case of leakage. Message-ID: <3AB2FFD6.69BBCE60@execpc.com> Thanks Frank, I have been staring at this carb and it's location for a few hours now and trying to picture a finished look. What I see is a very custom top shaped cowl and unique at that. The top engine cover will have to be flat to lower the carb enough to keep the cowl from having too many humps as if I were to mount this carb below the engine then tuning would be very difficult as the adjusting screws are on top of the carb. Had avgas in the tank and it found a way out, = tried putty in the corners near the panel level with the upper longerons = to no avail. Cut a hole 5 x 7.5 in the bottom put an alum plate inside = the tank for the retaining screws and decided to electrically bond all = the metal while I was at it, filler to plate to fuel exit line. Will use = Randolph #912 sloshing sealer to stop the leaks. I was checking the controls around the stick and noticed that the = control rod ends were not clearanced enough as they would undo the lock = nuts so I made spacers out of auto gas line to fit over the bolts on = each side of the ball swivel so they could rotate without touching the = safety washers. As I bought a project that has elevator and aileron push = rods already built I have been checking the system. I found a possible = future lockup possibility in the rod arm bellcrank just behind the seat. = The pushrod passes through the rear spar and attaches to the lower end = of a bellcrank which is about 6" long will a center bolt and the upper = end attaches to the rod which goes to another bellcrank amidships then = to the elevator. The bellcrank nearest the rear spar has a bolt for the = rodend to bellcrank lever which must swivel in an arch which put it = close to the alum angle on the inside of the bellcrank uprights. With a = bit of hand toggling I could get the lower bolt of the crank to ride up = on the angle which caused a lockup. I took a file and made an arch in = the angle top and got rid of that possibility. You can't over check your = A/C, Look at the pieces as they move through there full travel and = deflect them sideways by hand as they travel stop to stop. Hope this = wasn't to long but I had to admit that I could have caught the problem a = long time ago.=20 I likely saved my butt down the road (air) somewhere.=20 When I get the tank sealed I will call the inspector as the paperwork is = in his hands.=20 Oh, I must thank Manager Bill for the Structural Properties of the KR2S.
