Aircraft flares are a different angle than auto, etc. flares. If you use the teflon tape (frowned on my many people) make sure you start the tape several threads back from the end so you don't risk the possibility of tape comming off in the fuel line and giving you problems. I don't know how any six footer (plus) could fit in a KR-1 anywhere but the turtle deck or extend the lower half of the fire wall up under the engine...both create interesting sets of problems that we could "discuss" for a long time when we run out of real topics. This does raise a question in my mind of who it the tallest KR flyer in each division (-1, -2, and -2S)? Is the KR-1 pitch sensitive like the KR-2? If so, should I follow the same path that everyone else has taken to eliminate the problem? 2. My plans are from 1973 and are vauge at best. How many layers of glass should I use? The plans do not say, it just says glass the thing with Dynel. I take it from the other posts that I will be using E-glass. 3. I have read a couple of small books on the subject, the books weren't very good. It didn't tell me what is meant by "flox" nor did it tell me what BID tape means. Can someone answer this for me? 4. I sure would like to glass the whole thing, as suggested by Michael Mimms. Is this a bad idea? 5. I am 6'2" tall, Rand-Robinson told me that I am too big. Were they just trying to sell me a set for the KR-2S or is it true? Should I say "Big Deal" and modify the plane to fit me. I really want to build this plane. I don't have my -S supplement yet, so can somebody tell me the dimensions for the firewall? I have the KR2 firewall as measuring 93cm X 55cm. I heard somewhere that the firewall was widened by 2 inches. Was the vertical size increased too? Can someone give me that measurement (inches are ok). I need to check whether this engine will fit onto the firewall without bulges. Looks like it's going to be a close call: horizontal: 73,4 cm including valve covers, 58,5cm vertical. 520 from the prop hub plate to the firewall, but some more room is needed to get the exhaust headers bending down and away from the firewall (the line from intake header to exhaust header slopes down about 15 degrees from horizontal). I'll try and get some pics on the web, maybe even translate the info I got (it's german), mail me off line if needed. Thanks in advance for the trouble. Any comments are welcome! Then you have to do the fabric work. Rib stitching, Fabric tapes under and over the stitching. And lets not forget all the coats of dope. Clear, silver, color. The easiest part to build on an airplane with a fabric wing is the fuselage. I have tons of photos showing how much work it is. Until the KR, that's all I knew. The decks themselves are beautiful, and worthy of = consideration if you have built to plans. Having said THAT... BEFORE you start cutting the turtle deck down to fit your fuselage, = THINK about what you are doing very carefully. NOTICE I did not say = read the directions. The directions are wrong in a number of places, = most notably in the area of where the font of the deck is supposed to = line up with the rear of the seat. If you do not know this, and expect = the directions to actually be correct, you will find yourself panicked = (at 1:00 in the morning) trying to decide if you got the -2S deck, or = the -2 deck. What you will find, is that even on a plane made to within the limits of = the fuselage width (38.125 inches) the deck will have to be cut = considerably farther back to make room for the empennage than the = directions indicate. This will mean, obviously, that the canopy frame = and front deck will also have to move aft. In my case, all this moving aft means I will be having to fabricate an = extension of the front deck to make it reach the firewall. I am not = particularly happy about this after plunking down a good amount of coin = on the decks, but acknowledge this is part of purchasing parts to fit = something I built at home (even if I built it to the plans). I called Rand Robinson yesterday and Jeannette returned my call within = an hour. Her quote was "Well, those directions were written a long time = ago by (name deleted) and are not right. What you need to do is cut the = tail of the turtle deck back farther until it fits correctly. I have = sold 75-85 of these decks and no one has had a problem." My points for bringing this up are threefold: 1) The decks are beautiful and are worthy of your consideration, IF you = built to plans. 2) The plans are wrong, so proceed very carefully as you go along. 3) Rand Robinson is aware the plans are wrong, but can help you = understand what is wrong. Call them and have Jeannette explain what the = directions are really supposed to say BEFORE you a) panic, and b) cut = into the decks.=20 Good building, Respectfully, Dave "Zipper" Goodman zipperts@whidbey.net ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01C0B11C.55289EE0-- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 19:32:39 +0100 To: "Krnet@Mailinglists. I'm looking for the people that started the build on my Kr2. It came from Nashville, TN. Here's what I know: Two people had a business partnership, or so I'm told, and some time ago, one guy decided to build a Kr2. Eventually the partnership broke up, and the partner moved away suddenly who had started the Kr2, leaving the Kr2 and the business behind. Anyhow, William Dudley, with an EAA chapter in Nashville got most, but probably not all, of the project before it went into the trashcan. It is in the "boat" stage, with the center section done and even the aileron bellcranks are mounted. The wing spars are done, but that is all of the wings. All of the tail components are completed, but not installed. When I worked as an A&P at Smyrna Air Center, in Smyrna Tn, I got to know Mike Bowden, a Longeze builder, and Calvin Mudget, another builder, who helped store my project until a good friend helped me get it to south dakota. If anyone has info on this plane, it would be great to get more info on it, and maybe copies of any photos during building... Also, who knows at what point 51% is on a Kr2???? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm going for Honda power. Don't know how or quite why, but I want to.... Who knows.... Sounds like you haven't spent all your time drinking Pina Coladas on the beach down there... Yellow will sure be easy to see and that is important to me. I've been in the pattern with KRs and they are fast, small and hard for some folk to see, so that is important. My grand daughter says I have to paint "her" KR pink... Good luck. ===== Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
