In order to classify as an ultralight here the plane must have a stall speed of 40 knots (44 mph) or less. Does anyone know the specs. for the KR1 with the longer wings? I'm curious about the price for the plans too - that is not listed on the Rand Robinson Web site either. If you don't have an electric system, then I think you have the advantage of some exceptions in the FAR's. If you do have an electric system, then I think there is an FAR someplace that says you are required to have Mode-C if you operate within the Mode "veil". If you find you have to buy a transponder... then you have two choices... somthing old and cheap, but heavy and power hungry, or somthing new light and efficient. The going rate was about $1200 for a Terra when I bought mine, UPS avionics has a nice unit now for about that price I think, now that Terra is out of business. (I thought Terra was out of business, but that may have been a rumor). -- Ross pjvisc@netzero.net wrote: > > I have a VFR panel. Is anyone flying a KR that way ? It simply depends on the type of flying you are looking to do. Is there a stepdown ring that would let you in or a cutout for your airport? Your best bet would be to talk to a local FBO owner or instructor or call the governing agency for the Boston TCA. Unless there is someone on the net from your area, I doubt if you get much of an answer. I wonder if a KR is even visible on radar at 30 miles at pattern altitude?!?! Worst case, buy a cheap used unit, power with a battery, and only turn it on and off inside the ring. I bought a yellow tagged "King" unit for $550 and repainted the face. Test Flight Without question go to Rick Junkins web site and download his test plan for first flights. It cover absolutely everything you would want to consider for your first flight, from identifying landmarks on the runway for go/no go decisions to the use of a camcorder mounted on the shelf to record things you might miss. As for the difference in toe on the tires.............make sure they are the same. The airplane will handle differently depending on the amount of downforce applied to each tire. This will come into play on each and every landing. I have made numerous first flights for experimental, ultralights and yes, even certified (new engines, wings). You must have a plan and plan for the worst. 2. Dr. Dean hinges and micro. Look at my tail page, you will see how I handled this. I installed the hinges, covered them with old piece of vinyl gloves and rubber bands and glassed right over them. After curing, I cut the slots out so that the elevator would have to be at full up for me to access the bolt area. You do not see any slot at neutral. I micro'ed the raw foam. Folk, you will not find a better hinge design than Dr. Dean's. They are unbelievably easy to install and are bindless. I've done both Dr. Dean's and Rand's. No comparison. 3. Smooth Prime Instead of waiting for a "new" paint, I'll answer your questions. Yes, you can use any paint you want over Smooth Prime. Good stuff, isn't it? 4. Sport Pilot No, at this time the KR will not fall into the requirements for Sport Pilot. 5. Rex Congratulations!! 6. CG I'll not go too deep into this:-) Yea, right. The published CG and allowable published range is simply not correct. To not say anything about this would be foolish on my part with safety in mind. Too many people have spun them in, with a passenger on board, slow speed and steep turn inbound to not address this. As evidenced by earlier posts, extensive work was done a couple of years ago in the design of my HS stab to establish some aft numbers. This research was subsequently agreed upon, after discussion, by someone associated with Rand. Go to Mark Langford's page right now, he just got finished doing CG work on his airplane with a new airfoil. Don't waste your time, go there now. 7. Tower visits Ross, insurance will take into consideration rating and endorsements. With that said, they also take into consideration the propensity for damage in flying a complex high performance airplane. We have recently added an auto pilot and panel mount IFR, approach certified GPS to our Bonanza to decrease the workload enroute IFR so as to be sharp for the approach. Hopefully this keeps me sharp enough to lower the gear and go flat pitch at the outer marker in the soup. OH and BTW guys, go visit a tower.......it is very, very educational. Those guys are there to help not hinder you. Dana Overall 1999, 2000 Gathering host. It was a stock KR2 with an 1835VW on a single piece fixed aluminum gear. It was heavy, I think over 600 lb. I had a long center stick with an arm rest. I had no more problems flying straight and level than I have in a C150. It is really only when you are changing pitch, as in landing, that the sensitivity really showed up. You just have to learn to be gentle with it. Personally, I think the KR, given the proper respect, is a great flying airplane. That is why I am building another one. I strongly suggest that you get one with a fixed gear, or plan to convert. Converting to a conventional, single piece aluminum gear is easy. The most difficult part is filling up the old wheel wells.
