Adding two inches to the bottom of the firewall isn't necessary for a VW. It's real nice to have with a Corvair though, as it improves the geometry of the engine mount considerably, but is still not mandatory (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/mount_fit.html ). Adding 2" automatically mandates some surgery on the cowling too, if you buy it from somewhere rather than making it yourself. > 2. Nobody that I know of is changing the relationship of the spars to each other or to the fuselage. Anybody that's using the TET templates is probably making them exactly per plans, but with taller spars, using the exact same planform and construction methods, just using different templates to sand to. Troy is still quite happy with his new wing, and Dean Selby is now flying his, but hasn't has a chance to thoroughy wring it out, with only a few hours on it due to fuel and engine problems. I have a few recent pictures of Dean and Troy flying at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/airfoil.html , which has been updated and improved somewhat with more pictures of the guilty parties... Well, the plans use a channel that's cut down to an L shape, and there are hundreds flying so I guess that's good enough for KR work. And yes, mine's an L too, since I was too lazy at the time to find some T. T section would be better, but so would titanium, so that's up to you. For those who don't know what hinges we're talking about, I talked Dr. Dean out of the files to put at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/dean_hinge/ , since he's changed ISPs and hasn't had a chance to redo his web page. For you new guys, this is definitely THE way to do elvator and rudder hinges. I think Shapiro Supply at http://www.shapirosupply.com (which doesn't work at the moment) carries T section, and their phone number is 314-462-3850, in St. Louis. Joe, When you order a "firewall" from RR you get some stainless sheet that is roughly .005" thick, and is very light at 19 ounces, along with some 1/16" Fiberfrax that weighs in at under 4.5 ounces. That is apparently good enough for previous inspectors, and since all you're trying to do is provide abrasion resistance for the Fiberfrax. .018 stainless weighs about 4.4 POUNDs (I just happen to have a sheet, the size of a KR firewall sitting here, but I'll swear I wasn't stupid enough to order it for that purpose). The obvious moral of this story is use Fiberfrax (I'm using 1/8" just for overkill) and very thin stainless sheet. Aluminum would certainly work, but it's gotta be heavier than the thin stainless sheet, and will eventually corrode and not look nearly as nice as the SS. Whatever you do, you'd be crazy not to use Fiberfrax, since it's so light, cheap, and effective. Speaking of firewalls, I'm very close to sticking mine one. With the upper cowling sitting in it's proper orientation (not really finished yet, or attached), I can sit in the plane and have an amazingly clear view of the horizon with the plane level. I guess there's a silver lining to having my thrust line 2.5" lower than stock... Message-ID: <3B368ACE.B5007AE@execpc.com> Here it is Steve, Subject: KR> KR now at airport Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 18:48:09 -0500 From: FRED SMITH To: Mark Langford CC: Group KR NET References: 1 , 2 Just wanted to let everyone know that I took my new KR2S - N9079B to the macomb Illinois airport. I could not find a trailer so I made a special insert for my reese hitch and pulled with the tri gear. 25-30 MPH for 10 miles. Wanted to get up to 60 for short time to see handling but no guts- pulled good at 40. My KR is 4" wider- 36" longer than standard KR2 and has a O-235 lycombing. Mainly took to airport because there is an annual air show Sunday and wanted to show it. By next year it may be in a pile. Hope to taxi test in 1-2 weeks and fly in 3-4. Is Jim Faughn out there? would be nice to have you look over and maybe get some dual in yours before first flight. Hope to have ready for the gathering. thanks, Fred Smith Didactics1@aol.com wrote: > Recently, I read but foolishly deleted an E-mail on the net, of someone who > just completed a KR-2 that he stated was 4" wider (not unusual) and 36" > longer (that's unusual!). I'm not selling "my" KR-2S project (Rick Hubka) I am posting this for Florin Pintea who has left the list and is selling his KR-2S project. Hi Guys, I'm sad to announce this, but due to special circumstances I have my partial KR-2S project for sale to a good home. The following items are included: Fuselage (boat) completely framed (Sitka Spruce) but without the plywood and without the main (wing) spars. Fuselage was widened @ 45" at the shoulders and some at the firewall to suit the shape of the cowling. Other than that it is exactly as per plans. All (Sitka Spruce) tail section spars and related pieces. Rand Robison plans and all drawings including the "2S" supplement drawings. 2 (two) complete 110 HP ('64 and '65-'69) 164 Cu-in Chevy-Corvair engines (cleaned and prepped, ready for assembly). One partial 110 HP Corvair engine (missing heads, crank and some other not so important parts). Mock-up firewall and mock-up engine mount (not intended to ever fly, but built for show and engine assembly only). Bosch CSI (constant fuel injection system) intended to be adapted to the Corvair engine. One rebuilt Subaru starter lightweight with gear reduction (for use on the Corvair engine). One rebuilt (extremely small and light) alternator (for use on the Corvair engine) One starter gear ring to fit the Corvair engine and the Subaru starter. I have invested over $2,000 on these materials (not including a few hundreds of hours of labour that went in the project). I want to sell everything as a package and I need to get $1,500 CDN, which I consider to be more than a fair deal. If anyone is interested please let me know ASAP, if not I would appreciate if you put the word out there for me, maybe someone you know would be interested. I have only advertised it so far to a restricted number of people and have had some tire kickers looking at it, I would appreciate if you contact me only if you are serious about it since I have a busy schedule. Sorry about the short notice but I have to have this project out of my garage by this next Thursday (June 28, 2001) in the up-coming week. After that the project will be available for an additional $500, since it goes into long-term storage and I will have to pay for upfront and it is non refundable. If you are serious and leave me a cash deposit it may be possible to hold it for a bit longer. Please e-mail me privately at the following address florinpi@home.com since I do not wish to take up anymore bandwidth than I already have and I no longer subscribe to the N.G! (Thanks). You can view the project log and pics at the following URL: http://frontpage.home.net/florinpi/ My phone # is (403) 217-1406 and someone should be home most of the day, if not please leave a message and a ph# you can be reached at. Sorry to bother you guys, and thank you! It was about 80 deg when I left the ground and climbed to 2500. Oil stayed at 185 deg. Only 38.5 hours to go.--------------Kenny ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less!
