Well, it looks like I'm going to miss this one.  My oldest son plays college 
football and my youngest one plays high school ball.  My wife just informed 
me last night that she has to go the New Orleans for continuing education 
(yea, right:-) and leaves on the gathering weekend. 

My youngest plays on Friday night and my oldest plays on Sat.  (his team is 
preseason #1 ranked team in the nation in it's division, he, he, he) so I 
can't miss either of these.

Have a big and safe time.

There are a few Corvair engines on a few Pietenpols and I
know of no others........

There are literally hundreds of VWs on dozens of diffrent
planes.........

Having said that; A VW is going on our KR but someday I may
try out a Corvair on something.

I have a 1999 tracker fuel injected motor for sale. It has 3200 miles on =
it, left a tow behind a motorhome. It is a Mitzubishi. It weighs 220 =
with exh. & intake. I think it gets 110 hp. I was going to put on a belt =
reduction drive when I came onto the 2100D Revmaster. I paid 1200 Can$ =
so about 850.00 US$ will be about right. All wiring is on it, have an =

No, the plans I have do not show what rod-end bearings were used. What
did you use ? I had bought some Aroura rod end bearings from a race shop,
but an A&E said they were not suitable for aircraft. The ones he
recommended were about $25.00 each from Aircraft Spruce.

The "Official" 2001 KR Gathering will be in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, September
21-23 with Tommy Waymack hosting the affair this time around (870-535-3294

Tentative Gathering Schedule:
Thursday, Sept 20 - the real die-hards arrive

We will have the same hangar that we had in 1997. Pine Bluff is located

miss it! Most everybody that wants a ride in one gets it. You won't likely
forget it soon either. We will once again have dinner catered Friday evening

It cost me $54 at Best Western, but that's cause I'm just a youngster at 39.
Lea Anne, the receptionist at Best Western, said that we may want to use the
corporate reservations line, since they are bound to go by whatever rate
corporate reserves for you. If you call Best Western directly, it's $54
whether you can tip the age scale to the AARP side or not.

Last time the Gathering was in Pine Bluff we all stayed at the Best Western.
That's where my room in for this year, but they quoted me $59.  I can assure
you that going on voice alone, they'd have guessed I was twelve years old.
Oh, well, I just saved $2000 on  a new car, so I guess it all evens out...

OK guys,
Here is the scoop. I booked at the Best Western using the 800 number which is
central booking for Best Western. I was given a rate of $54.95 per night. I then
mentioned the KR Gathering discounted rate and the nice lady told me  to tell
them at check in and the rate would be adjusted down to the appropriate rate.
Here is a tip for all your hotel stays. I have traveled the United States fairly
extensively and have received a discount at every hotel I checked in to. You
simply ask for the Corporate rate and you will get a discount up to 10% every
time. They may ask for a business card so always have some with you.

Hi Netters,

Why is it that all the great KR deals are on the other
side of the world from me?  I drove a thousand miles
(each way) to pick up a KR 1 project in MA {because I
wanted the engine); I then drove another thousand
miles (each way) to pick up a KR 2 project in Abilene,
TX (because it was about 1/4 the cost of buying new).

And then, a couple of months later, some guy in
California (of course) GIVES AWAY a KR project because
he doesn't have storage space, and here another guy
(in California, of course) says "It's going to the
elements" because HE doesn't have storage space.

Anyone that has a project within a couple hundred
miles of Chattanooga that wants to give it away, email
me first.

Sorry for the waste of bandwidth, I'm just venting...

Hi...

If you can get the airplane "for a song," as you say,
then buy it.  Even though it may not translate
directly into "KR time," there's no substitute for
experience.  Any time spent flying is worth a whole
lot more than time spent thinking about flying.

But be sure and get transition training before you go
off la-de-da in a KR...from what I gather, you'll need
it.

Plus when you're done you can sell the Pietenpol.

It has taken me nearly all summer to build my cowling and mount the spinner. 
They like the rest of my KR are not perfect but, I kept at it as long as my 
ability and patience could take me. Its not the cowling most KR builders 
would choose. But!  Its my dream. (the heads stick out)  Yes Mark, You are 
still going to have the fastest KR on the planet. I wanted something fun and 
inexpensive. I kept it at 575 lbs empty and under $5,000.00. The engine 
wasn't something I planned. A good deal came along one day and I grabbed it. 
Funny how much a few dollars can so influence the out come of a project. 
Lately on the net I see projects being abandon because of storage. Some of us 
go through life trading one dream for another.  My KR was one I just couldn't 
give up.  I can't tell you how many years and the different times mine was 
wrapped in plastic hung from rafters, in an old barn or a friends garage.  We 
 went through a farm, two ranches and two divorces but my KR was always out 
there in the workshop waiting for me.  Its all built now.  I know, I'll be 
tinkering and doing little things forever. They say a home built is never 
done.   Right now I'm wrapping up the paper work and getting ready for the 
inspection.  I hope to update my web page soon.  Its going to feel real good 
being down there in Mark's completed section.

even April first!  Skip the rest of this if you aren't in the market for a
header tank.

I've been sittin' on this header tank for long enough, and can see no way
that I'm ever going to use it.  I should've sold it to Rich three or four
years ago when he asked for it.  It's the one featured at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kft.html .  It's made mostly of 4 pound
Clark foam and Hexcell epoxy, out of flat panels that were laid up on glass
for an epoxy rich inner surface that looks like glass.  It holds 17.5
gallons, and trust me, if it were any bigger I don't know where your feet
would go.  I serously doubt that it will leak, but no guarantees from me!.
The bottom is not yet epoxied on, so it's not too late to look around inside
and do whatever floats your boat in there.  There's a VDO universal sender
in there worth about $30,  a little sump and large aluminum outlet fitting
on the bottom, along with Great Plains filler cap on top.  The fuel sending
unit wire, ground wire, and vent line have yet to be run, pending removal of
the foam on the aft end for access.

Since I was hoping to use the RR cowling at the time I built it, it's pretty
much stock KR2S dimensions except slightly wider at the rear.  It's 36" wide
at the firewall, and 39.75" wide 24" aft of there (see the drawings on the
web page above), and ending at the instrument panel that extends 7" above
the longeron (scaled from the KR2S drawings). I'd check your longerons 24"
back though just to make sure, since the plans call for 38" wide there,
rather than my slightly widened 39.75. It'll fit wider planes, but not
narrower ones.

It fits perfectly up under a Dragonfly canopy (which is what it was designed
around), which is pretty close to an RR canopy, I believe.  The underside of
the back is unfinished, left as a solid block of foam so that all instrument
panel options were possible (including carving one in place out of foam and
glassing (or carbon fibering). The shape is slightly different from the KR2S
firewall, differering only with a more gently rounded joint between top and
sides (see the web page front view).   I basically rounded off the corners
and made it out of five tangent arcs, rather than just three untangent arcs
like the original was done.  It's stock height and with five minutes and a
heat gun, would fit as well as anything with the RR cowling.  It's the same
exact shape that my firewall and forward deck are now.

There's 7.5" of clearance from the aft end of the tank and to where I was
planning on putting the panel (24" aft of the firewall, same as most
others), and there's also a very deep radio cutout on the left side (I
figured fly with your right, twiddle radio with your left). My instruments
only require 5.5" at the most (fittings and all) but if you use some old
airline instruments, you might need all of it.  But you can still locate the
panel anywhere you want, and even recess it a little for a built in glare
shield.

The outside is ready for paint, by some standards, and pinholes won't be a
problem since I peelplyed it. If I were to use it I'd do one round of
superfil in a few little places and sanding before primer.    The bottom
needs to be stuck on and reinforcing tapes run around all outside joints.
The tank filler is on the front but it could be used for a tri-gear too,
considering you need some airspace for expansion anyway. The front edge
overhangs the fireall 3/4", and has a slight offset for the cowling to nest
into.

I'd really rather not mail this thing, but I'll gladly bring it to the
Gathering.  Two hundred bucks and it's yours...airplane not included.  That
means I built this thing for a hundred bucks worth of materials, and a
dollar an hour in labor...
