Being about 30 miles from a major airport in Little Rock, the Pine bluff Air Port is for local use and not much there but Pine Bluff is a medium city. A very good place to eat is Leon's Catfish at exit 39 on I-530. Wanna meet there on Friday. The Light House Resturant only open Thursday through Saturday is a big buffey and has excellant catfish, shrimp, stuffed crab, full salad bar and whatever. I think they charge $11.95 person and if kids are under 12 they pay about $4.00. I get in for $9.95 being over 60. I can certainly confirm that it is a small airplane. When Paul Martin had his KR2, I watched him fly the pattern several times, from the ground. His plane didn't have a strobe but was completely white (except for N-numbers) and our surrounding terrain is mountains and forest (darkish), but I would lose the airplane once it got to crosswind or downwind after takeoff. We have about a mile-long runway, so from about 1-1/2 miles the plane is tiny and hard to spot. From in the air, especially in the pattern around a city or town, you'll easily lose that little white speck against the ground clutter. A strobe, any strobe, is bound to help even if it's a little help. At night it's hardly much of a question because you're seeing a bright flash of light against a dark background, but in the daytime you really want to help yourself all you can. There are lots of potential experimenters' sources for flash strobe units: industrial signals, fire alarm strobes, vehicle recognition (USPS rural mail carriers, rural school buses, delivery vans all use strobes in different areas of the country, and you can be sure they aren't paying hundreds of dollars for them). I was going to build a tail dragger first with the ability to be easily changed in to a tri-gear setup if I didn't like the tail dragger. Upon talking to some of the other builders at the last two gatherings the consensus was to go strait to a tri-gear. I did purchase a tailwheel for my plane, but later sold it. There is nothing on my site about me building a tail dragger. The nose gear leg has been bent and the trailing fork pieces have been cut. All are ready to be welded. My motor mount has the receiver tube for the nose gear incorporated into it. Visconti" Subject: Lights Strobe Message-ID: <20010907.230158.-5443.1.viscan@juno.com> The Agena space module was sent into space with a strobe light attached. This was done so that they could try the test of docking space vehicles together. The strobe was for visual contact from a great distance. I was working at a company known as EG&G. It was our strobe that was on board. Some of you may remember Doctor Edgerton as he did experiments with strobe lighting for photographs. Remember the photo of milk as something was dropped into it ? Anyway...we found that the clear plastic envelope used for a lens could be improved. Someone came up with the idea of putting a tea strainer over the strobe to break up the light path. It worked great. It dispersed the light better and was easily seen, as was attested by the astronauts when they first spotted the Agena. You should have heard the loud cheers in the lab when the astronauts said they could see the strobe light. Some ideas may sound weird but you never know unless you try. For safty does the seat need to compress to absorb Kenetic energy of a crash or hard landing or will a solid buck shape surface(composite) be safe enough? Two I have redesigned the wing spars to handle 1400# gross and now I am looking at the tail spars. Has any one considered switching to alum spars both horiz and vertical stab? Strength and weight make it ideal but the bonding of the surface is a mistory to me so far. More reading may provide the answer but I thought I would ask the experts. Message-ID: --part1_c0.1a5dfa6a.28cc2f35_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In all reality how fast does a Kr2s with a corvair engine go? This plane is advertised as a cruise at 200 mph cross country plane but the posts I see are more like 110 to 160 mph cruise. Is this thing going to hold together for six hours at 200 mph while I go visit and vacation? Please be honest as I really want to know Thanks ! --part1_c0.1a5dfa6a.28cc2f35_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Sep 2001 22:10:55 -0500 To: "KRnet" From: "Mark Langford" Subject: Re: KR> How fast? Steve Makish is very close, but not quite. But consider the fact that Roy Marsh was clocked at something like 194 mph over a considerable distance with a turbo Revmaster putting out something like 80 hp (although his plane used the 23012 rather than the RAF48, and please don't replicate that mistake), and a typical, almost "stock" Corvair puts out 110 hp, and you should get over 200 mph with no problem. Marty Roberts has a high compression 0-200 that he spins pretty fast in his KR2 that probably puts out over 120hp and goes WELL over 200 (ask him for details). Troy Petteway has a C-85 powered KR2 that he paid a lot of attention to aerodynamc details, and he can honestly do 200 mph. I'm expecting over 130 hp from my bored out version of the Corvair (it uses 94 mm VW pistons/cylinders), and considering the new airfoil and other excruciating attention to detail, I expect to "haul buggy". You've probably already seen it, but if not, see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/ . I see it as a no-brainer. Add about 50 pounds of weight over a typical Type 4 VW, and you get another 30 hp. That sounds like a lot of weight, until you run the power/weight numbers, and it becomes a screamin' bargain. But don't take my word for it... Mine goes 135-140 and most of the time I'm at 3000' since I'm just about done with the 40 hrs. I do find that these are not intended to go 200 in anything other than very calm air. I will slow down quite often when the need arises due to turbulence. I guess the only reason for this response is to let those know just because the power is there you won't be able to use it as often as you like, unless your always going up where the air is rare.------------------------Kenny On Sat, 8 Sep 2001 22:10:55 -0500 "Mark Langford" writes: > > In all reality how fast does a Kr2s with a corvair engine go? > > Well, if there was one flying, we'd be happy to let you in on that > secret. > Steve Makish is very close, but not quite.
