I'm about 27 mi. north of the Cal./OR. border and am acquainted with Paul Martin, who refurbished a KR-2 and converted it from taildragger to tri gear. Greg Martin is probably not far from you; he just sold his project but knows a lot about KRs. I flew in Paul's KR a couple of times, saw it a couple of times, and got much of what Paul had left in his shop (newsletters, etc.) when he sold the plane. Depending on where you're located, there are also builders east of you in Nevada and south of you in the bay area. As a matter of fact, Paul's KR was sold to a guy in the bay area, and it may be close enough to you to get over to see it and maybe help you with your questions. Email me direct and I'll see how I might be able to help you. I went out and got my medical, got my bi-annual, and even did another annual inspection of my plan that included a data correspondence check. I'm so legal I can't believe it. Fixed a problem with my antenna, fixed a long lasting problem of having a Top Dead Center mismarked and now what happens? Class B airspace is deamed such that responsible citizens who have done every possible thing can't fly VFR. I must insert here that this is exactly what I thought would happen and if it were me in charge I would have probably done the same thing. But I'm still pissed. I haven't missed a KR Gathering in 15 years and have flown to the last 9. Well, I guess life goes on and I will make my VFR statement in the 30th year of the KR. I wish everyone the best at the Gathering and I wish I could have flown down. I finally gave up at 1:15 today. I was fueled and packed. The facilities look great and it is the 30th year of the KR. I have now been to 5 gatherings, and while this one in Pine Bluff had fewer KRs and less people, it was a really good one. We drove 1600 miles through 6 states to attend this one. I am really pumped about the next one in Red Oak. All of us from SC are already planning on how we will get there. It is gonna be great. Clair From what little I've heard. The Mooney Mite gear system is the design to aim for. I think the Mite is in kit form now. I just don't know where to go for it. And I would also look at the BD5 gear system. You can find them on the web, bd-micro.com I think. I'm sure you could find something that will help you in that regard. But in either case you might have to buy a set of plans. I just don't really know for sure. Greg S. Click on the thumbnail to get an image that is UN-edited but compressed by a factor of fifteen (the originals are half a meg each). I will pick out the highlights, doctor the photos, and write a whole new website with some text about them later, but for now, this might help you feel better if you missed it. If you have a question, send it to KRNet, because it's possible that the owner could answer it better than I could. I'll make a CD of those whose planes I took air to air photos of and send the full size jpg files directly to them, eventually. Basically, the first three photos are of Mike Garbez's Corvair engine with a Great Plains direct drive on it, the white KR2S with red stripes is Dean Selby's, the KR2S with winglets belongs to Gene Knight of Gulf Shores, AL, the white KR2 with purple leading edge belongs to Terry Chizak of Kansas, the red/yellow/black KR2 is Tommy Waymack's, the blue/white KR1 is Richard Shirley's immaculate 1983 beauty (don't ask me how he managed not to win a single award with what was obviously the best KR there by FAR), Rich Siefert flew the stock retract white KR2 with gull wing door, Ken Thomas flew the orange/blue trigear, Troy Petteway flew N100TP, Steve Bennett flew the KR1.5 that he is shown pulling out of the hangar by its prop, and the white/red Soob powered thing's owner escaped me, but he somehow managed to rack up three trophies. I'm officially volunteering to judge airplanes next year in Iowa, although I hope to be disqualified due to conflict-of-interest! Many thanks to Larry Flesner for providing his Tripacer to act as photo plane, and about three hours of his time (and fuel) flying around to get all these nice air-to-air photos. My apologies to those who I didn't get to meet, especially the guys that I blasted past on my way to the bathroom immediately after landing...
