There is a Bendix service bulletin out which recommends overhaul every four years regardless of hours in service. Aero Mag, the company that overhauled my magneto, suggested a more reasonable approach: 500 hr inspection and service at 5 years or 500 hrs whichever comes first. The overhaul cost me about $750. There were also some AD's on it that I didn't know about. I think a 500 hr inspection would have been about $500. New magnetos are over $2000. I have a KR-2 with a Revmaster that was purchased in the mid '80s. I first flew it in 1992 and had about 500 hrs on it last year when the failure occurred. Examination by Aero Mag determined that the failure was due to an overheated bearing that got the cam hot enough to melt the cam followers causing the points to close up. There was about five minutes between failures of the left and right sides of the magneto. I was returning from an airshow at Page, Arizona, flying over some of the worst terrain imaginable. Luckily the failure occurred later in the flight when I was about 10 miles from the airport at Delta, Utah. I was able to glide with the gear up to within 10 feet of the end of the runway. I hit an approach light with the left wing stub and the lip of the runway then slid about 100 down the runway. There was no structural damage and I had the KR flying again in a few months. I hope this information will be useful to you. I too tried to find out about service required on the mag years ago but did not pursue it and did not ask the right people about it. which recommends-----Original Message----- From: Kenneth L Wiltrout To: krnet@mailinglists.org Date: Thursday, September 27, 2001 5:51 PM Subject: KR> Bendix Mags >I was just wondeing if any one could advise me as to any required >maintenance on my bendix mags. I purchased two Slick mags and the wire harnesses about 2 years ago this month and only paid $1200 for all of it and only got 1 core credit. (only paid $1200, hell, this stuff is 80 year old technology and we are paying these kind of prices!) New Slicks ought to be selling for $500 - $600 now days and the two Bendix mags should be worth $300 core trade-in. Wire harness will be another $150 max. Trading in two Bendix mags you would order what they call an upgrade kit. I think I got mine through Matatucks or A.S.& S. Check out trade-a-plane. This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using youraddress book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has gotten into your system. Here's what you do: first, open your address book and click on "new contact" just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in !000 (that's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros). In the window below where it prompts you to enter the new email address, type in WormAlert. Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, ok, etc. Now, here's what you've done and why it works: the "name" !000 will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address),the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected. Here's the second great advantage of this method: if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your InBox almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. Many of you claim that you don't know Jack Schitt. Jack Shitt is the only son of Awe Shitt. Awe Shitt, the fertilizer magnate, married O Shitt, the owner of needeep N Shitt, inc. They had one son, Jack. In turn, Jack Shitt married Noe Shitt. The deeply religious couple produced six children: Holie Shitt, Giva Shitt, Fulla Shitt, Bull Shitt and the twins Deap Shitt and Dip Shitt. Against her parent's objections, Deap Shitt married Dumb Shitt, a high school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Shitt divorced. Noe Shitt later married Ted Sherlock and because her kids were living with them she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Shitt Sherlock. Meanwhile, Dip Shitt married Loda Shitt and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chicken Shitt. Two of the other six children, Fulla Shitt and Giva Shitt were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The wedding announcement in the paper announced the Shitt-Happens nuptials. The Shitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd and Hoarse. Bull Shitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world and recently returned from Italy with his new wife Piza Shitt. Now when someone says, "you/I don't know Jack Shitt" you can correct them.
