I can now say that I have personally flown the little "beast ".
Man, this is one sensitive airplane compared to any "spam can" I have
ever flown.

My first tailwheel takeoff in the KR2S was a little exciting but
manageable. What surprised me was the tendency to porpoise on climb out
as per all the hipe I have read over the years on the KR2. I was
seriously thinking about hitting the eject button ( if I had one) in the
first 100 feet or so.
Instead, I convinced myself that it had flown already under the cool
hand of my test pilot , Owen MacPherson , so it must be me !
By calming down and concentrating 100% , I was able to get it down to
smooth flight . Soon as the speed builds up in cruise and the attitude
levels off , it was fine.
Re-reading all the accident reports on KR2's later, I found a number of
crashes that were related to loss of control after takeoff due to
porpoising ( such as my experience) and ended up in stall/spin
/fatalities.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones to have made it.

Cruise on up to 3000 feet was really quite pleasant . The visibilty in
the KR2S is excellent by any standards short of an F16. The next 45
munites were a pure delight exploring the high and slow speed range ( 60
mph , no flap , solid feel ) and the top end ( cruise at 20" MAP) for
now was very comfortable @ 120 mph IAS. I will save maximum speed
testing until later.

Approach speed used was 70 mph with 2 notches of flap. My landing could
only be described as a "controlled crash" as I bounced and flopped
around trying to stick the beast to the runway. I survived , as did the
plane intact, ready to fly again , but not until I get somemore
tailwheel time .

I also have a theory that I need to move the CG forward somemore if I
can to correct the porpoising issue on climbout. My calculations and
weigh in put the CG at 22% MAC with one pilot and full fuel ( in level
flying attitude). 
I suspect that when the angle of attack is high, as in the climbout
mode, as the Centre of Pressure (Lift) moves forward , it increases the
effective difference between the CG and the  C of L and feels more like
30% MAC. This I believe to be why the plane seems so unstable in pitch
in that flight mode.
My theory anyway.

So I plan to move my engine forward another 1/4 inch ( all I can without
modifying the cowling ) and changing the engine mount spacers to steel (
for forward ballast) before the next flight ( fright !)

Again , a great flying airplane but unlike any production certified
plane so beware and be prepared .

If I can just figure out how Jim Faughan does it so nice every time ,
I'm laughing . ( Yes, I have read his article many times on this).

Keep in mind, all KRs fly differently.  I had a lot of problems, but
proposing was not one of them.  I just don't want everyone to think that
this the way all KRs behave on take off.

Sorry, I just can't sit still on this, you guys are spoiled by flying
these spam cans and they are no resemblance to the KR in any way. The
KR is an airplane you fly and the spam cans fly by themselves. Big
difference and too many negative things have been said because of 
inexperience. I know exactly why you were porpoising, because of
over control. The KR, you just think about it and it's done, just
that simple, don't use anything firmer on your control column than
your index finger and thumb, you don't need to be ham fisted. You had
45 mins of non apprehensive flight and how did you use it, did you set
yourself up for an landing. Give yourself plenty of altitude and pick
an altitude as your imaginary ground altitude and set yourself up for
complete control and round off for the landing, when the nose start to
drop, you have landed. Try it in different configurations and do it as
many time until you feel comfortable and no ham fisted controlling. 
Get it in your mind, attitude how it looks out the window where your
head should be anyway and not in the cockpit, because this is exactly
the way it's going to be when there is a runway ahead. Do not try any
wheel landings at this time because things happen too fast with wheel
landing, get it into this three point attitude and let it settle down
with the throttle completely at idle. 
I have flown many different types of a/c and have many hours under my
belt and still think this is the most beautiful, sweetest flying 
aircraft, and I would not steer you wrong because I want you to enjoy
it as much as I have!!!!!!

Ken, as a ham i have never had good luck with a ribbon antenna.  I would
suggest maling a 'temporairy installation' of another antenna with a ground

Howdy,
  Again,   The KR is a "responsive"  flyer.  Light & smooth control inputs 
are all that is needed.  A pillow, as an arm-rest, on first flights will 
assist the pilot by encouraging wrist / finger only input (center stick 
control)

   I have experimented with shifting CG's fore and aft within limits.  There 
is no increase or decrease in elevator responsiveness that I have noted in 
flight. 
   In aft CG (as with a passenger)  a longer takeoff run with higher ground 
speed is required to get the tail up prior to rotation.  Also, more forward 
stick pressure is required to initially get the tail up. (45-50mph)  Then,  
mid-stick input balanced to maintain level attitude while still rolling and 
gaining speed.  As speed builds (55 - 60mph) the plane rotates / wheels off, 
and continues to build speed. Maintain this attitude and allow speed to build 
to about 85 -90. (By this time the KR-2 will be about 75 -100 ft)  MAINTAIN - 
90mph climb-out speed by smoothly pulling back as speed wants to build. (NOT 
like the yoke of a Cessna!)   Stall speeds are a little slower and cruise 
speed is slightly faster in aft CG configuration

  In the more forward CG,  The tail comes up more quickly and requires less 
forward stick pressure. (but still requires some)  It is MORE elevator 
responsive at this roll out speed  It is a little more "squirrely" just prior 
to rotation (Torque / Gyroscopic precession / slip stream / P-factor effect). 
And, requires a little more rudder input,  ie. "dancing on the rudder pedals" 
 

  My suggestion,  Fly at mid CG as much as possible.  Use a pillow for first 
flights.  Be aware of changes of CG and flight characteristics with passenger 
and take corrective measures to maintain CG.
 When comfortable,  Experiment within CG limits and get to know your plane.

Bob, I'm obviously excluded from answering this question, but I'm going to
do it anyway, because you won't get many (if any) replies otherwise, given
the number of KRs flying with the engines mentioned, especially on KRNet.
So here's my two cents worth.

If you hang a big heavy engine on the front of a KR, you are going to need
to balance it at the tail anyway.  Why not put that lead weight into
balancing the rudder and elevators, rather than just a chunk of lead bolted
to the tail?  I don't even have a header tank, yet I have about 6 pounds of
lead in the tail, and my CG will be just about right in the middle of the
range.  If I had a header tank, I'd be looking for a lot more tire weights
to melt down. To balance the elevators, I'd do it at the tips, with the lead
overhangiing the hinge line as far as possible.

As far as REAL evidence for whether or not you should balance your
elevators,  it should be mentioned that Troy Petteway used to have his
balanced, but no longer does.  Having had it both ways, he likes it better
like it is now, but who's to say which of the many changes that he made is
responsible for his new-found improvement?  Marty does (as least to some
extent) and he rourtinely does well over 200 mph.  Richard Shirley's KR1 is
NOT balanced, and he does 215 flat out, faster in a dive, and he's been
doing it since 1983.   I think it can be said that there is no evidence that
says you MUST balance them, although it's considered good practice in the
"fast" experimental community.  And if you're going to have to add lead to
the tail anyway, why not add it to the end of the elevators?

Bottom line is that it very well may not matter at all, if past experience
tells us anything.  If you build your elevator so that the end of it is in
line with the end of the horizontal stabilizer (like the plans show) you can
always come back and add tip weights after you've done a weight and balance,
if you discover that you need some weight in the tail.  I guess it's a
judgement call.

You are certainly welcome to take this with a large grain of salt, because I
am  not a KR pilot, as Terry Chizak can attest...

There are many different cause/effect variables that go into
control surface flutter and I haven't the slightest idea what
they all are.  The only good thing about control surface flutter
is that you will generally only experience it once and it won't
last very long!!  It is usually fatal!!  Who knows what changes
we builders make to the airframe/control surfaces that could
lead to a flutter problem.  It may fly fine for years and one
day catch a gust just right at the right speed and WHAM, it's
all over.  

A friend of mine was flying a (very)small homebuilt one day when a 
loose rudder hinge bushing caused the rudder to flutter.  The pedals
beat the p#s* out of his legs and feet in a matter of seconds.  
He was lucky enough to have it quit before the airframe came 
apart and lived to tell about it.  Another time I was watching 
a model jet fly and as he finished turning base to final for a 
diving high speed pass, the model emitted a loud WHIRRRRR sound 
for about one to two seconds before disintergrating before our eyes. 
I'm convinced it was control surface flutter. (you can duplicate the
noise by swinging a plaster lathe on a string in a circle and listen
to the noise it makes when it starts spinning. Hey, I didn't have a
lot of toys growing up on the farm!!) 

Good engineers try to eliminate control flutter in the design.
The KR seems to be a good design but ,to my knowledge, even a 
good design will not be hurt by balancing. Engineers, correct 
me if I'm wrong here.

I'm an enginer, but I'll go with the farmer and the plaster lath ( do they
still make 'em?)

Balancing controls is one of those things that has no negetives, and doesn't
take much effort.  Mark's bob-weight device is a good start on the problem.

An amount of balancing is better than none.  If you can'r work in
100percent, go with as much as you can.

Ken,
    I have had good success with a 1/4" aluminum tube antenna, about 21"
long as I recall, polished and coated with epoxy, mounted vertically behind
the cockpit inside the fuselage with the strips of 3/4" wide sticky back
copper foil radiating from under the base of it in all directions as a
ground plane.  I soldered the foil strips together for continuity.  Good
luck with solving your problem.

The question is: has anyone used T-88 and flox
combo to add a little strength or to fill slight
imperfection where spruce meets spruce?

The comment:  I changed to the new airfoil so
everything I had done before basically had to be
redone.  I used a drill press the first time for
drilling for WAFs.  This time (because center
spars were in) I made the jig for drilling.  I
kindof used the plans dimensions but also took
from Mark Langford.  

I used a piece of 3/4" MDF, drilled through it,
cut out the "gap" in the middle, inserted a 7/32
piece of tubing from the hobby shop through which
a 3/16 bit fit snug.  I allowed about 3" to
extend on the "meat" side of the jig and 1 1/2"
on the other.  I then inserted an AN3 to the one
side of the jig and drilled through.

Using the jig produced far superior results and
ease than the drill press.  USE THE JIG!!!!!!!
