If you squeegee it around at all while it's expanding, you'll create huge bubbles in the foam. Maybe not your problem though. The 2 part stuff from Wicks works great if you pour it in place and don't touch it. I keep seeing innuendos that builders should listen to all the experts, and highly modify our KR's or die in an ill conceived unsafe design. Since I for one, always planned to die anyway; I completed my KR pretty much to the plans back in 86 and have been happily flying it ever since. As many of you may have recognized, a fair number of these State of the Art KR's never make it to the airport. As I see it; I have 16 years of flying a Fast, Great Flying, High Performance, KR; where many of the experts have been building and modifying for that long. It all boils down to the question; why do you want to build an airplane? Do you build to fly, or do you build to build? I find the KR has no shortcomings you can't master with a long wide runway for the first few landings. You may be able to improve the KR, but you will find as many of the experts have, you will travel a very rocky road to a very short list of those that have been successful. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 17:11:20 EST To: krnet@mailinglists.org From: Bo124rs@aol.com Subject: State of the art KR's Message-ID: <132.9893e13.29a81c08@aol.com> Sorry Richard but my selling of my KR had nothing to do with changes I made to the plans. I didn't spend anymore time (please read it again, no additional time) in building my KR than you did on your stock KR. Don't start the firestorm unless you can substantiate your accusations. I could have easily flown my KR in two weeks but I have an IFR Bonanza that is a dream to fly. Don't belittle mine and I won't yours. Trust me, when he cranks up his new KR this spring it will fly like a dream. Play nice now. Dana Overall 1999 & 2000 National Gathering host ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 01:05:19 To: krnet@mailinglists.org From: "Oscar Zuniga" Subject: firewalls in the library Message-ID: RONALD.FREIBERGER asked: >Where's Oscar, and why is he so quiet? As "net mom" Randy Stein knows, I spend much of my quality time in the library. You know what I mean. But here's the real story: I have a few weeks to finish up my projects here at work, get the garage cleaned out, get my house sold, figure out how to get a garage full of airplane stuff moved a couple of thousand miles, and get myself (and my library) to San Antonio in time to start my new job on April 29. So... it's basically a matter of trying to keep up with the emails and cover the bases until I can get back to building. But to throw out a little actual building stuff here, my experience with firewalls was what I did on my little "KR construction trainer" (the Flying Squirrel). The plans call for securing aluminum sheet directly to the 3/4" plywood firewall using high-temp silicone sealer [I didn't do it this way; more on that later]. Gotta work fast, because you goop out a whole tube of it onto the plywood, smooth it on, and you pretty much get one shot at getting your aluminum on before you have to start applying pressure as it sets (sandbags or equivalent). When the prototype was presented to the FAA man for inspection, he had a problem with it until it was pointed out to him that the silicone stuff was high-temp, then he bought off on it. Your experience may vary; these FAA guys pretty much have authority to use their own discretion on what they accept or reject. Now what I did was to still use the aluminum on the engine side (as Mark says- it sure is nicer to work with than SS), but it isn't acceptable by itself as a firewall material so I stuck Fiberfrax in and used the white adhesive. Mistake, because the white stuff is anything _but_ sticky like you'd expect. And the Fiberfrax itself is rather fragile. But like the rest of you have found out, all you're trying to do is hold everything together until you get a few things bolted on or through the firewall, at which time it's all effectively clamped together. When you attach the tabs around the edge of your firewall (what your cowling will attach to), it's locked in. I should also mention that in making my engine mount I made up a dummy firewall for my welder to use as a jig. I didn't want the wood charring to cause him a problem, so I got a piece of plain old galvanized sheet metal from the duct shop and faced my dummy firewall with it. Really sweet; I used my metal punch to make the mounting holes around the perimeter (15 minutes' work), and it turned out so nice that I'd be tempted to skip all the hassle with fiberfrax, silicone goop, and the rest of it- just use galvanized metal, take a small weight penalty, and be done. From what I've read they real don't do much. My 2S which I've been flying since last summer doesn't have flaps, but it doesn't float so long that a 2500' runway is to short either. I found that if you set yourself up properly on final most any airport shouldn't be a problem. Hope to be flying here in Pa shortly. Ken Rand was quoted as saying "I didn't think I needed flaps until I installed them" (or something like that). I suppose the people who know best about the stock KR flap system are those who originally didn't have them and installed them later, like Ken. Orma (AviationMech) is just such a builder, and he will be quick to tell you that they are a worthwhile addition, not only to allow a slower landing speed, but also because they pitch the fuselage down a bit for a better view when landing. There may be others, and they are welcome to chime in. On the other hand, I remember reading somewhere that somebody had them and taped over them because they were useless. Who do you believe? I don't know, but conventional aircraft wisdom is they are useful, although the tiny KR flap size certainly diminishes their effectiveness. For the KR, it seems like they would double as a much-needed speed brake during ground effect. Of course it might be that the flaps' close proximity to the ground exacerbates the gliding under ground effect and all things equal out. I guess those with flaps would find it easy enough to test and find out if they are useful or not. Just land without them and see how it goes! We anxiously await your comments. All you really need to know about flaps is that 98% of aircraft have them, so there must be a good reason. I figure my split flaps will cost me no more than 8 pounds, and I think they will be worth every ounce, but I guess I'll have to wait to find out for sure...
