You might also want to take a close look at Les Palmer's canopy. It does not slide, but does swivel forward on four arms without swinging up. Has the benefit of easy egress and not catching air if open. Doesn't look any more difficult to make than the traditional KR canopy. ===== Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! I'm not sure if a "slightly" larger rudder would help at the low speeds at the beginning of a takeoff or not, even with prop wash. I'm hoping my 6 inch steerable tailwheel will have enough sticking power so I can bring the power in quickly, especially on short grass strips. It would seem that a larger rudder would only make it more sensitive at the high speed end and you really don't need a lot of rudder in that part of flight. Larry Flesner ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 2002 18:36:32 -0800 To: krnet@mailinglists.org From: "Robert X. Cringely" Subject: Re: KR>rudder size Message-Id: When more power is added, the solution isn't usually more rudder, but more vertical stabilizer. Look at the P-52H with its taller tail compared to the P-51D. Notice the puny rudder on a Wittman Tailwind, which doesn't even run halfway up the stab. The Tailwind has a long fuselage and despite the tiny rudder is essentially a rudder plane (a friend used a single-axis autopilot on his Tailwind and it drove the rudder, not the ailerons). Is anyone out there running out of rudder control on their KR? Does anyone EVER go all the way to the stop except in a snap roll? I don't think so. So no extra rudder is needed. In fact I'd say that most of the KR tail control surfaces are too big, not too small. KR's need bigger horizontal stabilizers because they are short-coupled, but they need SMALLER elevators to make control forces more reasonable. Same, too, for the vertical tail -- taller stabilizer and smaller rudder. I know, I know: "a good pilot can adapt to KR twitchiness -- can even grow to love it," but losing 100 feet because of a sneeze is more macho than most of us really need to be. I would love to have a KR in which I felt comfortable making an instrument approach, which I don't think is a lot to ask. As it is now, the only way I feel comfortable letting-down through the clouds is to head out over the Pacific Ocean and spin down, then come back home under the crud. That's hardly the sort of technique you'd want to write in the manual. Bob >Somebody mentioned making the rudder larger. Troy has a C-85 and made his >smaller. Said he had too much rudder. Did one, so why not try the other:-) Don't worry, I won't be posting "this is great", "goes together like something else", "if the holes don't line up you got the wrong piece" kinda posts here. In all of my handicap I did stumble onto some ol list that people talk about these things. You know, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes:-) As for gatherings............show me the beer, I'll provide the AV gas to get there. SUN & FUN Right now, Mark & I are planning on getting down there on Friday or Sat before it opens to check out all the great open air deals before the crowds get there on Sunday. Sounds like Steve and hopefully Doug are going to making the trip also. Mark wants to hang out at the Corvair thing on Monday night (they'll have beer:-). Let's pick a place where we could leave a message at to get together Sunday evening for the airshow. Say the Van's RV site.............only kidding:-). Whatcha think.
