I was thinking >that there either is, or could be a measurement for varying thick nesses of >Micro. Slurry, Dry, Runny, Stiff,,,,,,, +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dan, After considerable experience with "micro" , I'm guessing the best way to mix micro is by "looks / feel" after mixing and using several batches and see how it works on spreading out. You usually want it as dry as possible and still spreads o.k. For final fill and sand I'd recommend the "Super fil" but make sure to stir each part well before first use and again if it sets for some time before using again. I think it will give you the most consistent dry mix for best sanding without a lot of hassle. For filling foam before layups you need a bit more epoxy in the mix so it spreads without damaging the foam so I'd go the epoxy/micro route. Use the 6 inch rubber squeege from Wicks and put on as little as possible, just enough to seal the foam. I let the mix dry on my foam before doing the glass lay-up. I hit it with one or two swipes with sand paper to get rid of the "prickleys" before laying on the glass. That let me spread my work over a longer period and I didn't have to rush. I'm convinced I get just as good of a glass to foam bond as when doing it all in one step. (this is going to drag a dead horse out of the barn) If in doubt, try doing a couple of 6 inch square test blocks of foam before starting your lay-up. Let them dry and then peal off the glass and see if you can tell which is which. It's one of those things you learn by doing. Good luck. Ran into several KR people at SNF, ended up having a great time but quickly had all the sun & fun I could handle............you know, temps. 86, sunshine, airplanes, beer........life's rough but someone has to do it. Here are some pics of the Extra/Navion get together that I witnessed. My pics are much smaller as I don't have a zoom on my camera. Steve Eberhart originally posted these for someone else and someone else downsized them. The extra cruised up on the tail of the Navion as both were landing. http://vondane.tripod.com/extra-navion/ Missed the clown show Tuesday morning with the "boys" from Florida. These were the two guys (if Stapelton was one of them) that didn't even pay for the banquet tickets at the KY gathering because the price of the dinner was cheaper and they are putting on the show???. Don't have much use for these two clowns. If someone else put it on, my apologies, if not no apology. Had to leave early so I also missed Steve's cookout. I truly wanted to go to that as Steve is a true supporter of the KR and puts on a great dinner. I did get to catch some of his VW reassembly forum. He had a nice collection of people. Had a great time. Please click on the URL listed below for details on the Escali Digital Scale 11#/5k. As for the company selling these scales, they are very reliable and quick to ship. The price of the scale is $34.95, with shipping any where in the US for $5.00 This digital scale weighs in both ounces, up to 176oz (11lb) in 0.1oz (1/10oz) increments and grams, up to 5000g (5K) in 1 gram increments. The scale includes a "Tare" feature, which allows you to measure the weight of a product in a container, without including the container weight. One of my favorite features of this scale is it's tempered glass (round) top. It really makes clean up easy. I really dig the "George Jettsons" look. There's lots more to tell you, the URL below does a far better job of showing you the scale and it's features. Even if you folks are die-hard epoxy pumpers >:) you'll love this scale an the ability calibrate your pump with it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1711239431 Kindest Regards, Larry A. Capps Naperville, IL ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 08:54:58 -0500 To: "KR Builders \(E-mail\)" From: "Larry A. Capps" Subject: Fillers and Comparisons Message-ID: <001b01c1e160$77dce5c0$0400a8c0@schpankme> Here's you some testing information about two homemade fillers: - Aeropoxy + micro - Alphapoxy + micro - Aeropoxy Light PTM&W - SuperFil Polyfiber ------------- DENSITY: - Alphapoxy + micro - 3.1 lb/gal* - Aeropoxy + micro - 3.8 lb/gal* - Aeropoxy Light - 3.8 lb/gal* - SuperFil (Polyfiber) - 5.0 lb/gal* (* +/- 2%; measured in a University Lab). Both homemade fillers spread easily with an edition of (tiny bit) alcohol. Aeropoxy Light is 3.8 lb/gal (i.e., same density as homemade Aeropoxy filler) and is very easy to spread, almost like cake frosting. Alphapoxy has the ability to take more micro than the Aeropoxy (3.1 lb/gal final vs 3.8 lb/gal) so the Alphapoxy filler is around 20% lighter (less dense) than the Aeropoxy filler (if mixed nice and dry). Alphapoxy mix was lighter, and much easier to spread than the Aeropoxy mix. With a little alcohol Alphapoxy spreads exactly like cake icing. AlphaPoxy Note: A mixture of 2oz AlphaPoxy, and 10oz (by volume) of micro will easily cover an area 24x36in. Use a squeegee to smooth it out, and remove excess. Clean the squeegee well after each stroke. When using the squeegee, the more vertical the squeegee, the better the result. DO NOT MISTAKE "Alphapoxy" for Aeropoxy and use it on a structural lay-up! ------------- SANDABILITY: Homemade fillers sand easily (if you make it nice and dry) after about a day of curing. Be careful to mix it about the same dryness each time you're working on a certain area. If you mix one batch too creamy that spot will be harder to sand than the other filled areas, and it is easier to get a high spot as you sand. Aeropoxy Light can be shaped with a Stanley Surform planer after 2-3 hours and then sands easily after an overnight cure. SuperFil also sands easily after an overnight cure. ------------- Best Regards, Larry A.
