The one in our current project is built with vinylester and I don't think it will be leaking on us. To test it, I put a 'T' joint on the outlet; put a baloon on one side and a tire valve on the other. Blew up the baloon a little one morning before I went to work. When I got home, the baloon was bigger. I figure just the SC Summer heat in the shop increased the pressure in the tank. Anyway it stayed pumped up for three days before I took the baloon off and installed the tank in the airplane. Keep on keeping on and some day you too will have your own airplane....!! Numerous people on the RV list report leaky tanks either upon intial build or at some point into flying. I feel quite strongly that Marks' tanks will not leak. I also feel strongly that properly constructed alum. tanks will not leak. I built my KR tank using Marks' method with great success. If you are planning on using alum. you don't have to weld them. Bend a flange into your plates, drill some holes for rivets and "seal" the joint with Proseal. You can get the stuff from most any supply house. The stuff is as sticky as Spider Man. It will jump from tube to your cloths instantly. Build it right and it won't leak. I'm in San Antonio and Oscar Zuniga just moved back here from Oregon. There are two KR builders here who are not on the net (they're in my EAA chapter) and I know of one KR in Austin and a new KR owner in Houston who is on the net but (I think) out of town on business at the moment. I'm sure some of them may contact you soon. I know Katy is a little ways from San Antonio, but it is real good to have you on the net. Bob Stone is up near Killeen, a good ways from you, but he's on the net and has a couple of KRs under his belt and he's full of good advice. There's also some guys up in the NE corner of the state between Dallas and Arkansas, but they are almost as slow builders as I am. I'm not sure, but I think at least one of them probably has a still hidden in his shop somewhere. They're a lot of fun to hang out with, but I'd be careful about any advice they give you. Again, welcome, and I know you will have a lot of fun both on the net and with your KR. By-the-way, if there's any way you can get up to the Gathering, it is THE best way to meet a lot of these guys and a lot more who are NOT on the 'net, not to mention seeing a lot of KRs and a lot of great talk about building and flying them. For those of you who are interested in this thread, here's a recipe you might enjoy for making your own Brandy. Hey, some of us are too cheap to buy a good Brandy! Fill a 5 gallon glass water bottle 1/3 full of cold water, if you have to buy the water bottle then use that water..... Add 12 pounds sugar, shake well to dissolve sugar, Add 6 Oranges into small pieces or which ever fruit you wish, ( apricots. of course use more) 2 1/2 pounds of seedless raisins, 3 pounds of Cracked Corn, 1 Yeast cake dissolved in 1/2 cup of warm water or the equivalent of dry yeast, Now fill the bottle with water to rounding shoulder of bottle, ( less water it will be stronger ) take a large cork that fits the bottle drill a hole through it to insert a straw preferably glass or a flex straw, for the fumes to escape, with loose cotton on the end.. let set for 21 days to ferment. then drain off liquid and let settle a few more days and just drain off the clear and it is ready.... Now if it is not strong enough for you try adding a fifth of potato vodka to it....... I have only had a couple of bottles blow up, A. We all know you guys don't need a still once you get to sniffing that vinylester. I haven't done anything on my plane, but it is good to hear the progress you guys have made. I want Larry Howell to get that plane of his back in the air. That's one of the prettiest KRs ever built. I've got my old Ford truck in the 'workshop' right now putting U-joints in it. The old ones were frozen in and a job to get out, but I managed and got to go flying south of San Antonio today too. Real pretty day, but the wind made things a little exciting. Getting hot enough to fly open cockpit now. Had a real nice Lancair parked at Stinson when I got back.
