At one time, an upper temperature limit of 165F was given for extruded polystyrene foam board (either the blue or pink stuff). Above this temp, softening/sagging/bubbling and other distortion can occur, leading to warped or distorted control surfaces, humps or dips in other surfaces, and possible separation of the foam substrate from the overlying glass. Not good. Also, this temperature does not apply to polyurethane foams, which have a higher limit. The "original" KR construction material is urethane foam, but many feel that it's more difficult to work with than the polystyrene and it is absolutely TOXIC if hot-wired. We won't go there. Regarding the possibility of using paint colors other than white on wood surfaces, keep in mind that there are other considerations such as the epoxy used to join your wood. In particular, the most popular structural epoxy, T-88, will lose its structural strength at elevated temperatures and begin to creep. Again, not a good thing. Demonstrate this to yourself by making up a wooden test block joined with T-88, get a can of Rustoleum and paint it the color you want (sorry, Mark; I just had to do that), and after it cures let it sit out in the sun and come up to temperature. Think of your plane as it sits tied down out on the ramp during a summertime airshow and simulate this. Then take it inside and get it in the vice to break the sample, watching the glue joint. Or dig into the glue joint with your fingernail; it will have softened from its ideal rock-hard state. When in the service helicopters always got to me big time. Later I discovered it was not just helicopters but anything with an overhead wing, commercial flights on Otters, flight lessons in a Cessna... However I have no problems in a low wing, bounce all over in desert thermals with a stiff gusting cross wind on a full stomach in a Cherokee, no problem. Moral, keep notes of the conditions under which you suffered motion sickness, for me it is a high wing, for you it might be a gusty cross wind. The only way to know is to keep notes until you find a pattern of common elements on the days you suffered. When I got started in the epoxy part of my project I determined that I didn't want to mess with the scales and the by-weight method. I ended up doing it the poor-boy, cheap way after trying graduated cups, syringes, and all that. My solution is not an original idea (came from someone else on the Net), but it provides for an exact 3:1 ratio. For my solution, see http://www.flysquirrel.net/pumps.html and please remember that this only works for epoxies that use the same volume ratio as AeroPoxy!!! If so check the sprig tension to see if it is opening prior to reaching max boost. Last but not least check the turbine blades (BOTH SIDES) and see if you have damage to either one. This morning I finalized all preparations for the start up of my engine. = This included hog tying my plane to the trailer hitch on my car. One = rope from the tail tie down and one each from the landing gear legs. I = noticed the neighbors peaking out from the windows next door. I can just = imagine what they were thinking. After a thorough pre-startup checklist, = I positioned myself and turned the key.....she spun and = spun....nothing...what the heck....I forgot to flip the ignition system = on....I have a dual system. Ok, lets try this again. Turn the = key.....she spins...boom....backfired not once but about three times. = Kind of got the old ticker pumping. Checked the timing, points dwell, = plug wires firing order and every thing else I could think of. Ok, = ready, clear, switch on, ignition...she spun and spun and backfired = again and again. Got out the books, manuals, said a few swear words, = called on the man above and decided to take a break and eat lunch. You = see, I had been at it for most of the morning and I was ready to put = this thing up for sale including my plane....Any offers will be = considered. But then, while I was eating my peanut butter and jelly = sandwich, I thought about Mark Langford's experience at Corvair College = when he started his engine. Seems he had his rotor set 180 degrees from = where it should have been....hmmmmmm........choked that sandwich down = real fast and went out and checked TDC, timing and turned the rotor 180 = degrees. Prepared myself again.....looked up to the heavens and said = please.....turned the key....damn she sure tried hard to fire up....no = backfiring, just would not catch and keep running. Checked the points = again, retarded the timing a bit and got ready to try again. Damn = battery now too weak to spin her fast enough. Put jumper cables to my = wife's car ( would rather have hers burn up if this thing caught fire or = exploded ) and hit the starter.....she caught up and ran about 30 = seconds...success, the neighbors applauded and I finally had a smile on = my face. Well this happened about five or six more times with the = longest run of about 45 seconds to a minute. Then, what the hell is that = noise.....sounded as if the whole insides were falling apart. This was = happening when I was starting the engine. I stopped, removed the plugs, = turned the engine by hand...no noise just smooth sailing. Put the plugs = back in....noticed a few drops of oil under the engine. It was coming = from my starter mount. Inspected the starter and tightened all = bolts...hit the key....god awful noise...found the starter teeth were = slipping on the flexplate. And I thought I was so careful to align this = correctly when I made the starter mount. Oh well....she is back in the = garage now and will be fitted with a new starter mount. Even with all of = this happening, this was still a rewarding day as my engine did run even = though it was just several brief times. Hey, I built an engine from = scratch and it ran!!!! A true accomplishment. Previously, I gave you 40.5" at rear of seat. Width at instrument panel is 44". Steve Robinson On Tue, 25 Jun 2002 11:34:26 -0500 "Edwin Blocher" writes: > Is there anyone in the Ft.
