First, may I mention that there was a very good write-up on this in AOPA Pilot last year, for those of you who are AOPA members. There is now a little wristband gadget that you can wear like a watch. I haven't tried 'em (pretty spendy), but they are supposed to work. Now my own experience. I don't get to fly a lot either, but even years ago when I was flying much more (100 hrs./year; that's high time for me!)- hot, bumpy, summertime x-c in mostly C-172s in South Texas, I could do all day long, eat anything I wanted, never a problem. Also did some solid IFR in Mooneys, didn't faze me at all watching the gauges rock and roll in the soup. But one day I got in the front 'pit of a Starduster Too that was going on a test hop out of the shop and it had a bit of a mixture problem, got some real yucky exhaust/fuel fumes in the cabin (even with open cockpits) and I was green the rest of the day. I was also fortunate enough to get some basic aerobatic instruction in a Great Lakes and a multi-turn spin in that puppy would do it to me too. I suppose if you fly aerobatics regularly you get over it, but spins will do it to me. (Wait! Maybe it's only biplanes that make me airsick!) I can do steep turns all day, any aircraft, both directions, hammerheads, bumpy air, mild aerobatics- but spins will send me home. I am determined to keep doing 'em because I think it's important to spin airplanes that aren't specifically placarded against it, and I'd rather spin it and know how to recover than to be afraid of spins forever. But I know what you mean about laying down for a couple of hours just to get the green out of your system; makes you want to swear off of flying. For a while. I purchased the Cleveland Homebuilders Special Wheel and brake set package from AS. Package #1 (A) on Page 201. The package came with zero instructions. I just received my gear legs from Grove gun drilled legs (beautiful work) So I am entering semi-uncharted territory here. I know how this stuff works but there are fine little details about aircraft hydraulic brakes installations that I will not guess at. 1) After splitting the rims and inserting the tube into the tire... The tube has a dimpled washer which sits on the valve stem and will seat in the hole on the inside of split rim. There are 2 nuts (one brass and 1 steel) I assume will lock up against the dimpled washer to hold it against the rubber tube. Is this correct??? 2) The 3/16" gun drilled gear leg hole exits the legs at the bottom and is tapped with a 1/8" thread. I was going to put in a 90 fitting and run the break line to the top of the cleveland breaks because everything I read says the bleeder valve should be at the bottom. Is this correct? 3) Are you guys using AN fittings and alum break line (flaring) or NYLO-SEAL Fittings and tubing or ??? What size? 4) For fitting... Teflon tape or?????? I have the Matco master cylinders which will attach to the rudder pedals. 5) I also ordered a matco parking brake valve. It's a tiny thing. How are you all setting these up? It has taken me a little while to getting around to responding to this question. Sorry about that. In addition, those of you who think that the KR design was handed down from on high, perfect in every detail, don't bother reading. You will just get irritated. There are three basic types of loads in a wing. 1) The primary is due to the G forces, which tries to bend the wing into a curve. Under positive G loads, the wing tips will bend upwards 2) The direction of the lifting force on the wing varies as angle of attack. At a higher angle of attack, the wing is being pulled forward. 3) There is also a twisting force on the wing due to the pitch moment of the airfoil. Most airfoils have a nose down twisting force as they generate lift. This means that the wing tips will twist slightly more nose down in flight. I am not using an RAF 48 on my airplane, so I do not have the actual numbers for any of these forces, but I can provide some general information. In a classical two-spar design, the main spar carries the majority of the primary bending loads and the rear spar carries the rest. In round numbers, the rear spar needs to be approximately 1/4 to 1/3 as strong as the front spar. The following numbers are the strength of various components in the outer wing panel of a standard design KR. The outer panel is used since the spar material is thinner and lighter than the center section and this is the critical area in the joint. One front spar cap is 1 15/16 x 1 7/8 inches in cross-section. The spruce will fail in crush at 4700 pounds per square inch (psi), which is approximately 17,000 lbs at compressive failure. The crush strength of the spar cap in the most dominate part of the design of a wooden spar. The tensile strength is larger (approximately 10,000 psi) but the crush strength is the limiting factor when the spar caps are identical in size. In addition, the crush strength determines the amount of load that a bolted connection can carry. The bolts carry the load in bearing on the wood, up until the wood undergoes deformation. The eight WAF to spar cap bolts will carry a maximum of approximately 1200 pounds each at failure, or 8800 pounds total. The metal portions of the WAF are considerably stronger; for example, the tensile strength of the fitting at the 3/8" bolt is approximately 12650 pounds for a single WAF, or 25,000 for the two. The through bolts to WAF strength is comparable. The rear spar cap is 7/8 x 15/16 inches in cross-section, so it will fail at approximately 3900 pounds. The five bolts will carry approximately 760 pounds each for a total of 3600 pounds. As with the front, the metal portions of the joint are considerably stronger than the wood. For a stock KR-2 that was built exactly according to design and is flown within the published max gross weight, these bolted joints will fail at something close to 6 G's and the bolts through the wooden spar caps are an inherent weakness in the spar design. The bolted joint will fail because the wood in the joint will fail. Ken and Stu copied an existing design for the wing attachments that is significantly less than optimal. In a structure like a wing spar, it is much better to design in a localized area that is stronger than the remainder of the structure, not the other way around. In the best interest of the KR community I've acquired the KR Newsletter, and would like to know what we as a group intend to see happen to it. Here’s the first question for the group: Is there enough interest and support to keep the KR Newsletter alive? To fully understand the above question, you must give consideration to the five fundamentals which allows a newsletter function. 1.) Participation/information 2.) postage 3.) printing and supply costs 4.) organize and gather information 5.) edit and publish the newsletter First and foremost is membership participation. The KR Newsletter cannot function if you as a member do not take the time to send in building ideas, pictures, examples or stories that would be helpful or provide interest to the membership. It’s fully understood that a lot of you don’t wish to write up complete articles, however you can provide a brief description of what we see in the picture or how great that first flight felt in your new creation! Here’s the second question for the group: Would you be interested in 27 years of the KR Newsletter (every page ever printed) compiled and saved in file format to a CD and fully searchable with a built-in search engine? One of the most important features of the KR Newsletter is its combined knowledge base (building ideas and stories) captured over 27 years of publication. With this information compiled on CD and utilizing the built in search engine you will be able to search for specific words or text phrases related to your building question. Your thoughts and ideas are most welcomed. Sincerely, Larry A. Ideally I would like to recieve a digital emailed or web site news letter instead of paper but that just ideally. It might help to reduce cost and time on the publishers part. The CD would have enough value alone to sell and support the letter. Darren Pond Cambridge Ont Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry A. Although I don't use alot of the information, the newsletter and message traffic on the KRNet keep me inspired to keep going. The CD is a great idea. I thought there had been one floating around a few years ago, but I lost track of what the status was. If you could start with that it might help cut down on some of your initial work time. Thanks very much to you and all the builders who contribute.
