The leg attach bolt pattern is fine. I wouldn't want any holes through the leg and lower than that. I'd make up a set of Diehl style mounts (although I would make the axles and weldments all one piece), and then go on line to mousebar.com and get a 5/8" thick bar of Fortal and cut a set of legs out of it. If you use the Diehl style axles, you don't have to mess with bending or heat treating the gear legs. My project has not yet flown but I varified it's rigging/building up through the wing center section when I bought a SmartLevel and found it to be within 1/10 of one degree of plans. I wrote an article for the Newsletter several years back including pictures. The process is very simple and easily repeatable. I can give more details with a follow-up post if anyone is interested but for now I have 3.5 hours to make a 100 mile trip in the "big truck" to pick up a load of oil. The thread usually turns to using RC servos and so on. I know some may consider this to be a unnessasary waste of money. If you have used an autopilot, they are great for those hours of sitting there going from point A to point B. Another use is inadvertant flight into IMC. Go to wing leveler mode, initiate a standard rate turn, go 180 degrees and let "George" get you out. Now, there are two major companies manufacturing quality autopilots for the homebuilt market. I have a certified STec in my Bonanza but I will be installing the TruTrack in my RV. I have done a lot of research on these two units but would be unable to document there performances any better than this repost from the RV list. It's a little long but worthwhile. You can see the pics at http://www.toddhoug.com Go to the TruTrack install on the left side of the homepage. The TruTrack uses newer technology than the Navaid. The TruTrack also is better in turbulance than the Navaid or even my STec as it doesn't use info from a 30 degree canted mechanical gyro. The TruTrack digitrak sells for $1495.00. The fundamental difference between the Navaid and the Digitrak is that the Navaid tracks based on cross track error (provided by NAV or GPS) and the Digitrak tracks based on heading (provided by GPS or internal magnetometer). Thus the Navaid makes it's corrections based on a track error signal provided by a NAV, panel mount GPS or handheld GPS using the smartcoupler to convert the GPS data stream to a cross track error signal. The Digitrak uses the raw GPS coordinate information and/or internal magnetometer to follow a selected heading. They both also use gyroscopic information to detect turn rates which are used to make immediate corrections for errors introduced by turbulence and just fine tuning the course. The Navaid uses a mechanical gyro with limited lifetime and the Digitrak uses solid state rate gyros which should last forever (theoretically). The Digitrak doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it's elegant simplicity is a feature in itself! It does not have the visible turn coordinator functionality the Navaid does. It also does not track to/from a waypoint as the Navaid does in its TK (track mode). However it does fly a GPS slaved heading. You set the heading, and it flys that GPS course over the ground referencing the GPS coordinates and it's internal digital rate gyros, regardless of winds. The difference is mostly in semantics. With the Navaid you program your waypoints/route in your GPS, fly a shallow intercept to the track until it locks on then it will fly you to the waypoint. With the Trutrak, you program it with the GPS heading to your waypoint and it flys you there. The Digitrak also has a magnetic course mode that it relies on when the GPS signal is not available. I would some what equate this to the wing leveler (WL) mode of the Navaid, but technically they are very different. In the wing leveler mode, the Navaid uses it's mechanical gyro to detect the turn rate and corrects by moving the ailerons to prevent the aircraft from turning and thus keep the wings level. It has no clue about heading, ground track, wind correction or anything else; it just keeps the turn coordinator from indicating a turn. In this mode, the Navaid can (and does) drift off course and off track which requires occasional heading corrections from the pilot. On the other hand, the Digitrak uses it's internal magnetometer (when GPS information is unavailable) in conjunction with it's solid state gyros to follow a consistent magnetic heading. In this mode it tries to fly a course that maintains the same magnetic heading. Thus, the Digitrack should not drift off your heading like the Navaid, but may drift off your desired track due to wind. As a side note, the Digitrak has an interesting way of self calibrating it's internal magnetometer. You fly to an area clear of obstructions and controlled airspace and then engage the autopilot on a 0 degree GPS heading. Using the buttons on the control unit go into setup mode and activate the calibration. It then fly the airplane on the 0 degree course and calibrates it's magnetometer to the GPS course. It then turns on it's own to 90 degrees and calibrates on that course. It does the same for each of 180 and 270 degrees, flying a square pattern and calibrating on each 90 degree heading increment. Pretty ingenious! IMO, the advantages of the Digitrack are: - Solid state - no mechanical gyros to fail. - Servo mounting hardware and pushrod included (model specific). - Immedeately available - no long waits as some have experienced with Navaid. - Simple easy to use interface - just set the heading and you fly that direction! - Smaller, lighter and less panel space. - Programmable servo torque and activity levels. Navaid advantages: - Turn coordinator and ball. - Follows a GPS route (At least sometimes from what I hear). - Can be used with NAV radio also. I haven't done this on a KR, but I do have extensive experience in the area. For a one time job, you can use a Big Cardboard box and a charcoal grille. I'm talking about refrigerator size box. Arrange the plastic with some wood strips (1x2) on the ends, and hang it in the box so it will have the desired "drape" when it's done. Hang it inside by wires, and hang box and all from a tree or whatever. Build a good charcoal fire and let it develop well, so that it's very stable and "quiet". Put it carefully under the box and let it slowly accumulate the heat inside. Keep it about 3 feet away from the box. When the plastic is hot enough, it'll drape into a catenary curve, and swing about easily if you jiggle it. Pull the grill away, and you go away too. Let it cool and you're nearly done. Trim it free of the support pieces and nearly to the desired shape, using a router and about a 1/4 inch bit. Put it in place on the aircraft and make fiberglass cuffs for installation. Take the scraps and practice flame polishing. gently sand the edges to reasonable smoothness, and then flame polish the edge with a propane torch by gently passing the flame along the edge 'til it goes shiny. This is a good way to stress relieve the edges of the finished product. It's very easy to do. If you want to talk about blowing canopies, feel free to call me at 765 457 6972 before Labor day. Just as a clue, I bought mine for the KR. It's not hard to do, but not worth the effort for a one time job. If you want to use lexan or scratch resistant (coated) Plexiglas, don't call; I don't like to listen to grown men crying. I arrive at 10:00pm on Thursday night and will be driving (already have car rental) to the hotel in Red Oak. My return flight departs Sunday morning at 11:45am. Let me know if anyone has corresponding times, I'd be happy to share the ride. Best Regards, Larry A. Message-ID: <20020815154457.40407.qmail@web10805.mail.yahoo.com> Well KR netters the time has finally arrived for me to start gathering parts and pieces for my next attempt at building a homebuilt aircraft. I have had tons of time to think about this and as time has gone by my life is back to a place where I can start collecting parts. I would imagine that the construction process will begin after Christmas. Once again I am choosing the KR for its bang for buck value. Some of you will be surprised that this project will be a complete 180 turn from the philosophy that was used to build the KR290 SkyPig. As a matter of fact, you could almost go as far as to say this will be more of a KR2 Classic (with minor changes). Here is the plan for the most part…… 1) VW power (IE 2180 old school powerplant) 2) KR2 plans built but fuselage just slightly longer (not wider) and horizontal stab slightly larger 3) CG range moved slightly forward of what is called out in the plans by mounting engine further FWD 4) DD wing skins if still available, if not then the latest and greatest wing from the Langford files 5) May use old school KR2 bubble with KR2 T-Deck parts 6) May even use RR retracts (dare to be old school) :o) And of course it will include all the cool and nifty mods such as the elevator hinge bearings used by the great Dr D. Some of you may be scratching your head and saying “What the hell??” but in my opinion building the plane this way is the fastest way to get me in the air for the least amount of money. Hey if money was not an issue I would be building a RV right? Also I don’t really need all that cockpit room anymore as I will either be flying alone or with my girlfriend/fiancée/wife who is all of 4’10” and 98lbs. And yes with the VW it may only cruise at 125 mph but you know what? That’s 125 mph faster than the plane I currently own. :D Cheers…. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
