Best Buy seems to have the best prices. Try to get above 2 megapixels and at least 3 X optical zoom. You can get stills out of a video camera, not not normally vice versa. Further, the still photos that you can get out of a video camera are usually low-resolution. To my mind, it makes more sense to stick with your existing video camera--or buy a low-price digital video camera--and also have a digital still camera. It seems that cameras that try to do both are not good at either. The new version uses a mini-cd and has MUCH greater resolution. It was about $400 at Wal-Mart last winter, so it may have come down by now. That's probably great for a library, where you might not "get out" much, but out in the field, the 1.44M of disk space that a floppy offers will only save two of my pictures! I bought a 256M Flashcard for 30 bucks a few months ago, enough to yield 440 pictures at the highest resolution my camera can shoot! A USB card reader is normally something like 20 bucks, but I got mine free from some company just for buying another card earlier. The floppy dictates a large squarish footprint for the camera too, and some funky ergonomics, I suspect. Maybe miniCD is better. Can't say, not knowing! But I'm all for the Olympus Camedias too. The 360L or 390L or whatever it's up to these days. I started out with their first one (and several others) and it was the best by far of the ones I tried. Olympus seems to care about image quality more than most. I wrote some stuff about digital photography (although it's old) and creating webpages, at the top of http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/misc.html , if it helps at all... It would appear there are two basic types of = regulator. The first is called a "shunt" and regulates by diverting excess power = (voltage) to a heat sink or some other load besides the battery. The = other is called a "series" and it operates by using thyristors to switch = the output leads from the dynamo on and off thereby regulating voltage. = The latter can cause reverse voltage spikes as it switches leading to = noise and other damage. If you overspin the former it can overheat and fail unless it has = another load (eg landing light) whilst in the latter the thyristor duty = cycle can be exceeded (it can't switch on and off quick enough without = overheating). The result in both can be run away overvoltage and = cascading failure....multiple smoke columns. Further, if the signal wire (yellow one in Kubotas) is disconnected, = eg., by turning off the master switch in flight, then the reference = zener diode thinks the battery is at zero voltage and will force the = regulator to again run away in both shunts (trys to charge an apparently = flat battery but can't as it actually charged up and so diverts full = power to the heat sink) and series (thyristors kept on). So...don't overspin and don't disconnect whilst running unless you can = switch out the unregulated dynamo leads (blue ones) at the same time, = eg., via a relay off the master.=20 There is an interesting thread on this topic lead by Mike Sharkey on the = KR net archives around the end of January in 1998 and a google search on = shunts and series regulators will give thousands of sites. I'm leaning more and more towards a small field controlled alternator. = Does anyone know of a unit no deeper than about 3" with similiar = mountings. Hope this warning can save someone the expense of a new regulator. I must say that if you're getting 40 pictures on a floppy, the quality is not going to be up to par with what I'm used to (my photos are half a meg each). In the digital camera world, quality is defined by how large a file the camera can create. These numbers are usually given for TIFF files, and JPEGs are maybe a tenth that big, but my camera makes 550k JPG files, and the Mavica apparently makes 35k files. Most of my files, when quartered in size and compressed by a factor of 8 for the web are reduced to about 50k, and they look OK on a computer screen. But when it comes to photos that I want to print out and keep, I need all the pixels I can find. But if it works for you, that's great, and it may be the most wonderful camera on the planet for throwing web photos out there...
