This is only the second gathering we have been to, but for sure we'll try not to miss any more. It was great to meet all of you there and hear about your progress on your projects. Cheryl and I took an extra day and drove the rental car down through Missouri and Kansas then back to Omaha to catch our flight back home to Seattle. We drove by the old Forbes Airforce base in Topeka Kansas where I was stationed in 1958 and 1959. That brought back some old memories. I've included a link to some real ameture photography of the pictures I took at the gathering below. I didn't have time this morning to put comments , maybe later. The tube I have installed was given to me by Gene Byrd and was used in his KR-2S prior to his crash. He had a bend in his tube which I eliminated when I cut the tube down to fit my KR-2. The tube is aluminum 7/8 OD. The ends of the tube have a progressively smaller tubes inserted and then a threaded rod end and a 3/16 bolt to secure it in the end of the tube. I also used the forks from the rod ends to the bell cranks. To see how I made the system go to http://www.jackandsandycooper.com/stickandpedals.html If you need more details I can take more pictured and post them. Robert J. I do not want to sound stubborn, but there are a couple of reasons I have not abandoned the present tube. > 1. I am trying not to open up the hole any larger in the wood bulkhead that joins to the horizontal stabilizer spar. I don not know how much of this wood is critical, hence the small diameter tubing choice. > 2. Not as good a reason but, the only ends I could locate to fit > directly into a tube, fit the 5/8" tubing. They are kind of a fork end that slips into the end of the tube, and then you can rivet, or drill and bolt, which I did. The cross bolt through them is also AN3, and the bolts are 90 degrees to one another just in case being inline could cause a problem?! > 3. These little fork fittings kept the push tube operating in a > straight line with no side loading like a side mounted bearing looked to cause. If I centered the bearing, it would require much more machining then I have the skill and equipment to fabricate. Also hooking anything big at all up to the elevator horn in the tail is a @#$%&^ ! If anyone is interested, I told Colin it would be OK to forward it to the KRNet. I gave him part numbers and prices. Here is a pic of the end of one pushtube. The insert is threaded to accept a male rod end bearing and locking nut. Again, if anyone is interested I can take a couple pics of the bellcrank showing a very neat install of a bearing in the middle that allows you to use an AN4 bolt and sandwich these male rod end bearings using AN3 bolts. Very, very light and very easy to make. I would have liked to have used both on my KR. http://rvflying.tripod.com/pushtube.jpg I'm not saying this is the perfect way to do it, just another easy way to do it.
