I had started building my KR2S last year and would occasionally scan thru some of the past newsletters. I had even subscribed to the newsletter for a couple of years (Dec 97-Feb 2000). This summer I decided to try and read a few pages each nite starting on page 1 and I just finished going thru all 1907 pages (I really did not read the classified ads!). It turned out to read like a novel and there were all kinds of characters and plots. Just the efforts by the newsletter editors over almost 30 years is a story unto itself. What is sad is that I never found out toward the end of the newsletters what happened to some of the contributors -like Art Smart - Minnesota in the summer and Alabama in the winter - did he ever fly? The history of the KR is also fascinating and where things like that painting of a collage of Ken Rand and the KRs came from. Discussions that you see on the KRnet have been going on since the inception of the KR .....and many of the problems and questions for which folks are looking for answers to are hidden away in these newsletters. And there have been some folks (like Steve Bennett) that have been there from the beginning and continue on today. Going to the Gatherings and meeting some of these folks has taken on a new meaning for me. I printed off pages of ideas as I went thru the newsletter and hopefully it will speed up the construction of my KR2S. What is also sort of sad is that I don't see how the history of the KR will be "bound" into a volume for future generations. Today construction ideas and first flight reports are being published via web pages and e-mails. If these electronic publishings are erased or lost, there goes that part of KR history. I guess my bottom line is that if you have not bought the KR Newsletter CD and are building a KR, you are missing out on one fascinating story and will not appreciate all the people and efforts that have gone into making the KR the airplane(legacy?) that it is. r/ Bernie KR2S Builder Lexington Park, MD http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n2w6 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 20:09:07 -0600 From: "Mark Langford" To: "KRnet" Subject: Re: KR>KR Newsletters Message-ID: <002b01c3abe6$9e50a960$1202a8c0@basement> References: <002301c3abed$5feef300$d1877241@computer> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Precedence: list Message: 2 Bernie Wunder wrote: > What is sad is that I never found > out toward the end of the newsletters what happened to some of the > contributors -like Art Smart - Minnesota in the summer and Alabama in > the winter - did he ever fly? Art Smart is still alive and kicking. I've met up with him a couple of times in his travels between MN and the gulf coast of AL. He's quite a character, and one of those folks that enriches your life just knowing him. He got his flying alright, with a Subaru engine. Early in the test program he lost his alternator, but by the time he noticed, the electronic ignition was about ready to quit, due to the lack of juice left in the battery. He was over some heavily wooded terrain and packed it into the tree tops. Unless I have my stories confused, he broke enough stuff that he basically had to wait for help, and spent a really cold night up there. Impact with the instrument panel cost him an eye, and he still wears an eye patch today. But he started back to work on another KR, with lots of innovative solutions to prevent a similar failure from ever happening again, but had real problems with his medical for a while. Last I heard though, I think he got it back and was building again, although I won't swear it was a KR this time around. I think he was going to move to AL or FL permanently, so I'll let you know next time I talk to him. And yes, how do think I got so "educated" on KRs? By reading every one of the Newsletters before I even got started building! I put little yellow index tabs on all of the good stuff, like dual sticks, ailerons, horizontal stab, airfoils, etc. As for websites disappearing, I'll bet my wife leaves mine up and running long after I'm gone, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to save it disk or print it out... Vacuum bagging is the best way I can think of for keeping air bubbles out of one of those "concave" mold situations. Natural forces are always trying to separate the material from the mold. Since the spinner is mostly enclosed, you could TRY lining the layup with thin breatheable material and pouring sand or something in it while inverted to press the material into contact with the mold. Maybe even two-part foam. I'll bet that would force it out. Or just paint the thing. Troy Petteway kept having aluminum ones crack, and he discovered that they were out of balance when he took them out of the box. So he made one out of carbon fiber that's much lighter, way better balanced, and he's had no problems with it that I know of... I live about 30 miles from him and would like to contact him regarding a ride in his KR2S. I have heard he has given other people familiarization flights. I am almost ready to fly my KR2 and it would be a great help to know more about the controls first.
